Dimmu Borgir - Trivia
Silenoz and ICS Vortex did a special voice appearance, in the Adult Swim show Metalocalypse, on season 2, episode 14: Dethdad.
The intro for the song "Alt Lys Er Svunnet Hen" and the whole "Sorgens Kammer" from the record Stormblåst were plagiarized by the band's ex-keyboardist Stian Arstad from the band Magnum and the videogame Agony respectively. On the re-recording of the album 10 years later, the intro for "Alt Lys Er Svunnet Hen" was replaced for an excerpt of an exorcism of the movie Constantine and a new song called "Sorgens Kammer II" was composed to replace the old one.
Silenoz explained in an interview that his stage-name is derived from an alternative Latinised spelling of the Greek "Silenus," the name of a satyr-like being in Greek mythology who was a tutor to the wine god Dionysus, and was said to possess special knowledge and the power of prophecy while intoxicated. In the early days of the band, he used as stage name Erkekjetter Silenoz (erkekjetter being Norwegian for "arch heretic"), having it shortened later to Silenoz.
"Grotesquery Conceiled" was played live when Dimmu Borgir won the Norwegian Grammy award called Spellemannsprisen in the metal category in 1999. The band were supposed to play the song "The Insight and the Catharsis" with the symphony orchestra called "Kringkastings orkesteret", but they had to change the song because the orchestra refused to perform with Dimmu Borgir due to their "satanic" message. Later that night at the after-party, a Dimmu Borgir band member got in a fight with a member from the same orchestra.
'In Sorte Diaboli' is the band's first concept album, with a story located in medieval Europe. It is about a priest who begins to doubt his faith, and then ends up taking the place of the Antichrist. 'In Sorte Diaboli' is Latin for "In direct contact with Satan".
Abrahadabra, loosely translated as "I will create as I speak", was created by author Aleister Crowley in his work, Liber AL vel Legis, or The Book of the Law. This album is the second in the band's repertoire to deviate from the traditional three-word title.
Dimmu Borgir is given a reference in the animated metal cartoon show Metalocalypse; In it, there is a restaurant called Dimmu Burger.
Lead singer Shagrath took his stage-name from the orc Shagrat in "The Lord Of The Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien. Shagrat was the Uruk captain in command of the common Orcs and Uruk-hai at the tower of "Cirith Ungol", which guarded a pass into Mordor.
Shagrath and Galder recorded a song with an old childhood friend, Norwegian rapper Diaz.
Dimmu Borgir are one of the first black metal bands to gain mainstream success worldwide.
Dimmu Borgir got their name from an area of lava formations close to Mývatn, a lake in Iceland, - The Dimmuborgir - meaning ''The dark/dim castles/fortresses''. According to local legends, the formation is the gateway to hell. |
