Kekal - New Video Online
"Track One", the new video from Indonesian avantgarde metallers Kekal, can now be watched below.
The message behind the video as explained by the band: "First off, I am AGAINST all sorts of endorsement towards hierarchies in social life.. But as human, as in animal, I believe that we tend to behave such way, where the more dominant one bullies the less dominant one.. Bullying happens everywhere, across all cultures, ethnicities, and genders, and it happens in many forms and contexts.. On this video, I took a very old public domain footage about an experiment to 3 rats, where in such cases, they developed a hierarchy between the most dominant and the less dominant ones.. The less dominant rat on the experiment did not fighting the more dominant one until the end, but instead it developed a kind of behavior where it no longer wanted to eat the food and to let it consumed by the more dominant one..
The message of this video is all about fighting to get your own right, and to keep fighting until the end.. That is also the message of the song itself: to keep moving and breaking all the barriers.. What depicted on the video should not happen in the context of human's social life.. We are a social animal, where are ways to communicate and interact between each human, and we can exchange expressions and ideas.. And most importantly, human also has a kind of fighting spirit that doesn't seem to appear in other, non-social animals, because we are driven by the so-called motivation as the driving force..
There are many cases in history where the "weak" ones overcame the "strong" ones.. We can even risk our lives to have the victory at the end.. We can fight all the bullies, we can fight the corrupt government even though they seem to be too strong to be fought, and they keep intimidating the less dominant ones.. Those in majority tend to intimidate the minority.. It is true and real, and I must say it now depends whether we are motivated enough to fight it or not, and not letting ourselves to automatically create any thought of "social hierarchy" based on what we perceive in the first place.. If we do so, we're same as rats..
And oh, no animal was hurt during the making of the video.. The entire footage was taken from the old public domain film.."
"Track One" comes off the band's latest album 8, which was released on January 23rd through Whirlwind Records. More album details were previously reported over here.

Kekal - Still Disbanded Though Recording New Material
As indecisive as a five-year-old in a toy store, Kekal - the so-called clinically dead metal band from Indonesia - have confirmed a new album is planned for 2010. When avantgarde becomes beyond the grave.
"Good News! Kekal is NOT dead, and it is proven that new songs are currently in the production.
After speculations about the current status of Kekal following the departures of all band members last year, it is confirmed that a new Kekal studio album is planned for 2010.
The new album will be some sort of "collective effort". It means that all 3 former key members (Jeff, Azhar Levi and Leo) have contributed in making "the whole art-form in one package", while not limited only on the music side. Levi is currently making the entire artwork for the album and Jeff is producing the music. Two songs will also have Leo's guitar works.
About the album direction, Jeff told that each song displays its unique character as a balance between electronic and organic elements, rhythm and melody, aggression and atmosphere, simplicity and complexity, beauty and the beast. Confirmed instruments being used on recording are: electric & guitars, drums, samples from field-recordings, theremin, analog synths, vocals, vocoder, and TR-808.
The album will redefine the term "experimental" in its true sense, but yet listeners will find it accessible and digestible.
Kekal is currently looking for a potential record label to release the album on CD and digital later this year. More details including tracklisting and album title will be announced in the coming months.
However, there is no plan for Jeff, Levi and Leo to rejoin Kekal. Kekal will stay memberless."
So what now? Kekal is not dead, but not active either, but somehow you're still active? And the band stays memberless but still the key musicians are working back together on new material under the Kekal moniker? And if you're memberless, who's going to sign the contract of the record deal, huh? What is this? A smart marketing trick for a Zombie Jesus concept album? You're either disbanded or you're not. Make up your mind already. Metal is not a shoe outlet.

Kekal - Remaining Members Leave, Band Stays Clinically Dead
Official press release, taken from the Kekal newsletter
Jeff Arwadi and Leo Setiawan are leaving Kekal effective immediately. Arwadi and Setiawan were the last two remaining Kekal members. Bassist Azharlevi Sianturi already left the band in March. Throughout the past few months, Jeff has been securing all copyright and other rights of the entire Kekal's "intellectual property" including the band's entire releases back-catalog as well as all official internet sites, and also plan to make some of the band's important albums for free download. However, after seeking some legal advices, he decided to keep Kekal to remain exist as a band (read: institution) albeit without active band-members.
The following is the statement made by Jeff: "I cannot describe how sad I am at this point, but the situation is simply inevitable and I have made a decision, a very tough decision I've been thinking about for more than a couple years now: I am leaving Kekal.
Tuesday, I celebrated the 14th anniversary of Kekal in a very low-key; drinking alone quietly in sadness and grief, remembering all those years we have been through as a band. It is hard to believe that I had to leave this way, but it is better to end like this than to suffer by not being able to express myself properly to the band, and not being able to handle the band all by myself.
After about 3 years of living in such a different atmosphere (being closer to the nature: parks, lakes & mountains, and being placed in the city of 1 million instead of overcrowded 13 million that I used to live), I found myself devoid of all the anger and bitterness within, and further, that turns out that I am unable to express myself with music. I realized that I had used music to express negative feelings for far too long, to channel pain, anger and bitterness, if you don't have them in you any longer to a certain level, you can't force yourself to make that happen or they might influence you back into your life. I am all against fake expressions, and there is no way for me to lie to myself pretending that I still have that kind of negative feelings and continue to write songs for Kekal.
There are indeed some other reasons which contribute to my final decision, but they are more personal and private.
As for the other remaining member, Leo, he agreed that if I leave Kekal, he will leave too. He has his own music project at this moment and he wants to keep his focus on that, so this means he is leaving Kekal with me. And Levi already left Kekal earlier this year.

Kekal - New Album Update
The title "Audible Minority" is based to the fact that the music on the album has mapped itself into the extreme minority status; something beyond recognition of the musical norms. "Audible Minority" is a stateless, nameless, and label-less manifesto made from all the bitterness and pain. The album that is entirely bleak, gloom and dark.
Almost 2 years in the making, "Audible Minority" has been constructed during various personal events in life. It all began in September 2006, before the release of "The Habit of Fire", and continued to shape itself up until May 2008.
Final Track-Listing:
1. The Vampire Song download the song at Last.fm]
2. Conditional Destiny
3. Against
4. Ceasefire Negative
5. Between Us
6. For The Greater Good and Evil
7. Narrow Avenue watch the video]
8. Virtue of Perseverance
9. Shuffling Biorhythms
10. All That Matters
11. Locust (A-ha cover)
First 8 tracks will be available for FREE DOWNLOAD (yes, no kidding, free download) with the option of paying some small donation. However, the "official", label-released versions (CD and digital) will have all 11 tracks plus some possible extras. After some discussion with the record label who will release the official version (CD and digital), we agree to push the release date to December 2008.
Updates from Jeff (Kekal guitarist/vocalist):
"Audible Minority" is a very difficult album for me, both technically as well as emotionally, because I had to use many different DAW programs, different places and different computers to record as well, even within one session/one song. There are lots of technical challenges and headaches (literal headaches). Emotionally, all those 'drifting' atmopshere made me feel like a nomad; taken-out-of-home and exiled. The good thing is that I didn't set-up any deadline, so let the music finishes itself.
To be honest, I don't see "Audible Minority" as a complete album, I see it as a continuing process, or as a bridge to the future unknown. This is an album which ends with a triple dots, not with a period. It is like snapshots of certain moments within a dark journey, and the journey continues. All of the band members were having their own personal struggles in life when the songwriting started, and it continued as the music shaped itself. Most of the (limited) communications between me and other members at that time were never about discussing the music, but all about sharing our own problems. I had to deal with all the songwriting and recording on my own this time, because of the geographical reasons as I was moving to a different country. There were times I thought that it was impossible to finish the album myself, and even there were times I thought about quitting the band as I was not having a good time working on this album. All I felt was the overwhelming sorrow, but I could not stop doing it. Making music is the only therapeutic way, to ease myself from the pain.

Kekal - Working On New Material
Official Press Release:
"Hi, I'm Jeff.. I'm releasing this update news on behalf of KEKAL, the band you either LOVE or HATE..
Kekal have gone through some very tough times since last year, mostly due to the geographical factors, and we also have our own personal struggles that needed to be taken care of as first priorities.. I am living in Canada now, make it really hard to communicate with rest of the band members in Indonesia, and if we have time to talk, we prefer to talk more on personal things as close friends, rather than talking about Kekal and all the crap and utter nonsense that happens in the music business and music scene in general..
But, however, after sooo many times considering for possible options whether we should quit the band or put the band under eternal hiatus, or maybe even worse than those two, I have decided to persevere and keep the passion alive by continue working on the new material for Kekal's next album, all by myself unfortunately, which I planned it to be released sometime in 2008.. Please note that Azhar Levi Sianturi and Leo Setiawan ARE STILL official members of Kekal up to this point, and we have decided to keep Kekal as a trio, even though they couldn't contribute to this new material due to a lot of reasons.. We understand that it is better to keep it that way..
I've already recorded some new songs last winter as the first material from me that was written down, constructed, and recorded in Canada during wintertime and cold temperature (some external factors that made the musical atmosphere really dark), and after all this year's spring-summer-fall long break, I plan to continue working on more songs this coming winter (depending on the financial situation), and put them together and master them as an album once they are finished.. The new material is very dark, extremely isolated, sorrowful, emotional, and introspective in nature, but yet they are heavy, and also marks as the most explored music I've ever done so far, although it isn't as complex, progressive and abstract as "The Habit of Fire"..
Last but not least, we need all your support by buying "The Habit of Fire" CD/digital.. It will help us a lot financially to keep the band going.. If you wish to support us that way, please do not download the album illegally or buying the used CD from eBay, as those things won't help the band financially..
I will continue to put the latest news on Kekal's myspace Blog.. http://www.myspace.com/kekal"

Kekal - Recording New Album
Kekal started the recording of their 6° full length album in early January. The band expects about 6 or 7 months to finish recording the album. The Album is still untitled, but it will be an concept album and the length of the album is estimated to be longer than 70 minutes.
The production, engineering and mixing will be in charge of Jeff Arwadi (guitars and vocals for Kekal) who commented the following about the album: "I am very confident with the new material. I had never been as confident and proud as when we did "1000 Thoughts of Violence" CD, but now I am, without a doubt. I believe this will be our most-focused, most-explored and most ambitious album we have recorded so far. There are tons of fresh, diverse new elements, and many of the experiments are actually the ones that have never been done before in metal, yet they are unmistakably 100% Kekal".
