In Flames - Part Ways With Guitarist

The following update has appeared on In Flames's official website:

"Jesper Strömblad, guitarist in In Flames has decided to leave the band permanently.

He had this to say - 'I have decided it is best for me to leave In Flames and to quit the band permanently. The last 17 years have been a blast, and I am proud to have been part of this great journey, with the most talented and amazing people anyone can wish to have the privilege to work with. I'm also the luckiest guy in the world, to have the BEST fans in the world, who have been supporting me during my difficult times. It means the world to me, and I'm determined to fight and defeat my demons once and for all.... and by the help from you guys, I'm on my way. I'm far from done with music, metal, or whatever my direction is taking me, so be sure to hear from me in the future.

...May the Force be with you!'

Anders, Peter, Daniel & Björn commented 'We are losing a great guitar player and musician, but in order to keep a very dear friend this is probably for the best.

If this feels right for Jesper we are behind him 100% on his decision.

It is way too early to speculate about the future and possible replacements and things like that. However, we can assure you that In Flames will continue as a band, release albums and tour the world.

The door to In Flames is always open to Jesper. We are, and will always be behind Jesper 100% on his way to recovery.'"

Nooooooooooo. Damn. Well, perhaps he'll eventually go on to form another band and start making music as good as In Flames were in the 90s. I'm a little frightened what this will do to In Flames' sound.

WTF this can't happen. when i saw the link i hoped it was Bjorn(hell, who didn't) but this is absolutely shocking and unexpected.

EDIT well ok, i didn't want to sound that dramatic but it was pretty unexpected news, and i think In Flames will be very different without him. i hope he forms a new band though.

Oh come on. As if any guitarist makes a difference considering how simplistic In Flames' music is these days. They'll hire some no-name content to play nu-metal riffs and Stromblad can hopefully concentrate on Dimension Zero or anything else more fulfilling than In Flames.

Okay, In Flames is now 100 % dead. That was the only original member they still had. The band should do one last tour now and then call it.

But they won't.

In Flames was (at least in the 90s) one of the greatest f*ckin' bands in the world. They made the most awesome death metal I ever heard.
Maybe Jesper doesnt leave for ever.

Their sound can't get much worse. His departure just solidifies the fact that their next album will be even weaker than A Sense Of Purpose. Even if he does go on to form another band (and overcome his "demons"), it will probably be a gothic band or something more pop-driven like The 69 Eyes.

Good news; maybe Jesper finds music again in some other project/band.

Aye, maybe he'll do something where he plays guitar solos again, I miss that.

What do you mean they wont be the same?? They havent been the same for the past 10 years now! This is a great move, whether it is because Jesper is an alcoholic or not its a good decision. Maybe some of the other guys should do the same...I suppose you can only play shit music for so long before you start getting fed up with it. Their music was revolutionary in the 90's so Im actually surprised it has taken so long for someone to leave the band.

Good on you Jesper, you show those fuckers...
