Metal Storm Presents MetalQuiz

We have devised a neat little trivia game for you to flex you metal knowledge muscles.

The idea is very simple: we (and you!) add questions in form of trivia, image or short audio sample - and everyone can then try to guess the band (and sometimes the album).

- Questions appear randomly
- You have 2 tries and one hint (if provided)
- Questions have point value from 2 to 6, depending on difficulty. Half of the value is determined by band popularity on MS, and half by the submitter.
- Using a hint subtracts half of the points, failing on first try subtracts 25% of the points. Guessing the album is +1 point.
- If you're the submitter or have been to the question's edit screen (meaning, you know the answer), the question will never appear for you.

At the moment there are only 80 questions (most of them submitted by myself, so please excuse the lack of variety), but we're hoping that with your help this number would soon expand tenfold!

Try it out here:

OK, i submitted three decent questions and all three were rejected. Now i came along a picture in the quiz: The cover of Burzum's album Aske. You could clearly read Burzum and Aske on the picture. Wtf is with you guys??? Who rejects and accepts those questions?

Don't worry man, I'm sure the Burzum question will get deleted asap. I noticed it too for aout half an hour now and commented on it.

There are no cash prizes, or rewards of any kind on this thing, and I'm not really harming anybody by using google to find the songs I like but don't know. On the contrary, I'm finding good music that I haven't heard before, which is the point of this whole thing, I imagine.

Yeah, I also think that the point of this quiz should be to have fun and broaden our horizons. Anyway, competitive quizes function only in real time and this one still needs some tweaks...

Yep, some of the samples are ridiculously hard, without any hints or do not ask for the albums and some of the hints are useless. Needs some tweaking, yes.

Which is why it has been clearly stated that the staffers encourage you all to add questions. That's the whole point

The whole reason I'm having a hard time with the "not showing us the correct answer" side of things is because it's pretty hard to Google good guitar tones and note sequences. Sometimes there's a lyric to help you out, but most of the samples I heard were the solo/intro/just music. Below I've transcribed an interview that I had with myself earlier today to further show some of you how I feel:

Rupert: Is this quiz a fun idea?
Rupert: Yes.

Rupert: Does not finding out the correct answer (after the two given tries) help broaden my musical horizons?
Rupert: No.

Rupert: Does not expanding my music library because of not being able to figure out an interesting song sample make the quiz more fun?
Rupert: No.

Rupert: Any last words?
Rupert: Two actually.

I have to agree with the previous posters that deliberately not showing the correct answer for failed questions in order to prevent an incredibly inefficient form of cheating is ludicrous, especially when getting on the high score board really does not matter anyway.

It may seem like a problem now while there are still relatively few questions in the database, but as more and more people submit questions, there will eventually be thousands and thousands of questions in the database. Once the number of questions gets large, even if some loser with no life creates a second account specifically to cheat, the likelihood that he would be able to get the same question to appear on both accounts in a reasonable amount of time would be really slim (assuming a decent question-randomizing algorithm). Add on to this that the would-be cheater would then have to remember the answer to the question from the first time he saw it, all the while having gone through hundreds of other questions at least. It would be far, far more efficient to cheat using Wikipedia or looking up lyrics, and withholding correct answers does nothing about this (still very minor) problem.

However, this quiz could function as a great music discovery tool. By withholding the correct answers, you are keeping us from discovering the artists behind the samples we enjoy. As a result, the artists will be missing out on droves of potential album sales, much like if Pandora.com were to withhold artist names.

Please rethink this policy. I would bet that at least 90+% of the quiz takers would agree with me, and nobody would realistically get anywhere by trying to cheat with a second account. I think it's unlikely that anyone would even try, and even if a cheater succeeds, so what? The high score board might have a sketchy entry? That's a tiny price to pay for the opportunity to discover new music and artists in a fun quiz.

So yea, I don't stop at the ones I don't know, and neither should any of you . Have fun, poeple!

PS. Don't get the idea that I've cheated my way up there, I answered a lot of the questions by myself.

This.
I cheated my through more than half the questions.

I completely agree. I managed to work my way to get to know many of the samples I didn't know, but a lot of people might not be able to do that. Also, with google's help, I'm on top of the chart, and I really don't give a fuck about the rankings.

The admins might have to choose here between a fun, somewhat stupid and cheatable no matter what you do quiz, and a feature to help people find new music in a way that's easy, fast and also fun.

I'm gonna laugh my ass off and take virtually all complains with a gran of salt in a month or two if it happens that the question acount is still 82.

Don't missunderstand though, I do agree partially with the complains. But still... lol.

We will consider revealing correct answers, but first we need to get more questions in the database.

Yeah, wait until you have a really large database, then start revealing answers. The game is for fun anyway. It's hella hard right now if you don't Google things, I got like 29 points on my first run through.

Alternatively, do a poll on the front page. Do we want the hard version or the one that reveals the answers?

It would still be just as hard if it only revealed the answers after you've tried guessing. Also like someone else said, I too would be glad to add to the question database if the number of questions will help this matter.

There a song on the quiz that starts with a operatic female high note, then goes to a doom riff and the music stops and the girl says: "to reveal the ?? in your" and then it dies.
I want to know what that song is ¬¬ At least PM it to me so nobody "cheats".

There are many amazing songs in the quiz , but I don't know any of them ..
The quiz is a great idea, but there should be any chance to find out the name of the song or band.. It's a big pity to see that I'm listening to a part of a wonderful song, but I know that I will never listen to the rest of it, because I don't know who is that song from..
