Randy Coven - Bassist Passes Away

Bassist Randy Coven, who toured and recorded with artists including Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai, Mountain, Holy Mother, Ark, Riot, and many others, passed away on May 20th of undisclosed causes. He was 54. Randy Coven currently played with his band Shadow Eden and guitarist David Mercado announced via his Facebook page the death of his bandmate.

David Mercado's message: "Please join me in celebrating the life of the late, great Randy Coven. My thoughts & prayers go out to his family, friends, colleagues & fans. There has been an outpouring of support since his untimely passing yesterday & while I'm finding it difficult to find the right words & deeds, we should all take solace knowing that Randy will live forever through his musical legacy. God bless you Randy! It was an honor & a privilege ...until we meet again."

Many musicians have sent messages of condolences and paid homage to Randy Coven.

Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen) said: "My heart is saddened by the loss of yet someone else I knew and respected in this crazy business we call the music industry. Bassist/musician extraordinaire Randy Coven has lost his life at the young age of 54. I had only met him a few times and had the privilege to perform once with him alongside Yngwie Malmsteen in 2000 when I was brought up for an encore at the band's show in LA that year. Randy was also part of an amazing group called CPR with Al Pitrelli and this is where I learned of Randy's fantastic talent! RIP my friend...."

Here is what bassist Steve Di Giorgio (Death, Testament, etc) said over Twitter: "Another master is gone. Randy Coven was one of the kings and this album alone influenced me so much."

His former label Lion Music also sent a message: "We are very sorry to announce that bass virtuoso Randy Coven has passed away. We are grateful to have had the pleasure of working with him both as solo artist as well as in projects like MCM on a number of occasions. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. His music will live on!"
