Kauan - Announce New Album, Details Unveiled

Kauan are back! The Russian folk/doom metallers have been releasing albums in quick succession over the last few years and have now announced Sorni Nai, their seventh album in only eight years. Sorni Nai is a concept album that references and expands upon territory explored in their previous work Pirut, showcasing a single 52-minute long track, twisting through lush string orchestrations into sinister and operatic doom metal. The album will be released on October 20th, 2015 via Blood Music. Find out more about the concept below and check out the cover and tracklist as well.

Tracklist:
01. Akva
02. Kit
03. Khurum
04. Nila

06. Khot
07. Sat

The album's concept focuses on the infamous Djatlov Pass Incident. In 1959, nine Soviet hikers went on a trip to reach Mt. Ortorten in the Ural Mountains. None of the hikers were seen alive again. Their bodies were found a mile from their campsite, missing their skis, shoes, and coats while braving -30°F weather. Two of them had fractured skulls, two had major chest fractures, and one was missing her tongue. Investigators listed the cause of death as "a compelling natural force," and the case was immediately closed. The artwork by Sonia Melnik is a panorama displaying known imagery of the hikers skiing towards their destination.

The album's title references the golden goddess of the Ural Mountains' Mansi region. The band otherwise continues in its tradition of singing exclusively in poetic Finnish. Even though the album is intended to be one single track, the band has split it up into chapters for the CD release, which are titled in the native Mansi language.

I'm from Russia, and even though I did not catch USSR days, I've spent quite a lot of time studying the history of my own country. To assume that "there were no murders officially" is bullshit. There were a lot of cases, when government intentionally censored some unsolved crimes in media - that's totally true. But speaking about specifically murders in general - government did like it very much to tell stories about bravery of militia in cases already solved. Sometimes some violent details were indeed censored with purpose to not create massive panic (and some crimes were full-blown violence with totally no meaning - like it happens in the USA nowadays sometimes).

Stalin days weren't really so much different from times later. You gotta realize, that the difference was only about Stalin himself as a political figure. It was not government thing that with time it became harder and harder to keep some things a secret - more media, more communication between common people from different cities. Even though phones were tapped and media censored - Stalin in his days dealt with these things with much more extreme measures then other believed reasonable - and, of course, it was dangerous to anybody to tell such things to his face. That's the reason USSR government have never been maintaining such extreme policy after Stalin died. They did realize that some things you can't keep a secret no matter how hard you try - so they told stories that were easier to compherend to take people off the scent of other stories they still did not want to tell.
Speaking about this very case - my bet that it was so weird, it went to need-to-know basis. I think that case was closed officially and opened in KGB - even if they did find something it may still be classified. And it's not because our government doesn't want it out in the open. It's just classified cases like that have sort of expiration date - few decades usually, so that when it's unveiled people who worked on case would have less chance to get hurt or something. Or they would be already dead, whatever.

Lumikuuro is still their best in my opinion. Such a unique, amazing album.
