Devin Townsend - Announces 'Devolution Series #2 - Galactic Quarantine'

As Devin Townsend announced earlier this year, he has been using the Covid downtime to work on new material for upcoming albums, and for a current lack of touring possibilities and encounters with fans on the road he decided to do a series of live albums, quarantine albums, and generally interesting projects that keep people entertained while he's busy on his next larger releases. The series is called the Devolution Series.

The second release under the Devolution Series moniker will be the Devolution Series #2 - Galactic Quarantine album, scheduled for June 25th 2021. It was recorded in 2020 in various places around the world as a replacement show for the COVID affected "Empath Vol 2 European Tour" and cancelled Summer festivals. It originally aired on September 5th 2020 on StageIt.com. For a first impression of what to expect, the video for "Aftermath" is streaming below.

After the disaster that was Empath, I don't expect Devin to make any new music that is any good. Empath was just slightly less shit than Ki, which is hands down his worst effort (not counting his ambient and improvisation stuff cause those were not real efforts).

I'll take live albums any day with his old songs. Too bad he included one song from Empath that is shit. At least add Borderland which is marginally better than most of that cesspool.

Devolution Series is such an apt name for his current state. His music has clearly been devolving for a few years.

Well, that's your opinion. I didn't LOVE Empath, but it was a step down from the brilliant Transcendence.

Transcendence was a good record. Much better than Empath. Empath was essentially an uninspired collection of corny, cheesy melodies, some of the worst of Devin's discography. It felt like one of those mostly useless bonus discs from the last couple of albums, namely Epiclouder or disk 2 from Transcendence. Essentially stuff that did not make it on the main album for a reason. With very few exceptions.

Yeah, I'll agree it was underwhelming and a bit over-cheesy, although it did have a few songs I enjoyed. It's just hard for me to rip on newer Devin since it includes the masterpiece of Transcendence.

It has a few, but even those are not the great stuff he used to make.

Disk 1 has 3 good songs, the middle section: Borderland, Requiem and Adrift. These are the 3 songs that come closest to the quality one could hear on the previous 2-3 DT records. Hear Me is also decent.

Disk 2 has almost nothing, with the exception of King which is only passable.

The cringe and awful stuff though permeates the album. Just listen to Why. How the fuck do you follow-up a SYL/Deconstruction song like Hear Me, with a corny, fluffy version of DT going Broadway with a touch of Disney. And not even the decent Disney from before the 80s but the awful one that followed after.

Empath recycles way too much stuff from Deconstruction. A lot of the songs feature sections taken directly from Deconstruction songs. And Deconstruction is not among his strong albums as the popular opinion says. It is one of his most adventurous, experimental albums, but not among his best.
