Avantasia - New Album Will Be A Double Album

Taken from Tobi's official website:

Tobias has just decided that there is too much material to put it all on one album. So the next chapter of Avantasia will be spread over two albums.

"I have always given my very best, but this new chapter in Avantasia's history is too much and too ambitious to be just a regular album. I have worked on it for years now, and it has become even more than two albums! I don't know if I will release one first, or both simultaneously, or maybe even both in one special package. It's all up to whatever label is going to release it, we'll see. The production is so massive and I have so many guests this time. It's the continuation of the "Scarecrow"-story. I knew that story would be spread out over two albums back then when we started working on it in 2006, cause we had writtem a real Rock Opera of over 20 songs even back then. But since then we kept composing, and out came even bigger and better material. Sometimes you don't have a single good idea for months, whereas at another point it just keeps flowing. "The Scarecrow" was a huge success, with that success backing me up, it's inspiring to be able to do things big time! Looking at the music industry today with all the CD burning and downloading I guess in the near future many of us traditional Rock and Metal bands won't be able to spend such a production budget, I am afraid I won't be able to afford so many guests and such a big production with orchestration and a choir and all that. That's why this production takes so much time, it may be the last big epic I will be able to afford, and I want it to be the biggest piece I have worked on so far."

So far Tobias has confirmed the following musicians to be part of the forthcoming Avantasia opus: Klaus Meine (Scorpions), Ripper Owens (ex-Judas Priest, Yngwie Malmsteen), Eric Singer (KISS), Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween), Jorn Lande (Masterplan), Bob Catley (Magnum), Sascha Paeth, Felix Bohnke (Edguy), Alex Holzwarth (Rhapsody, Sieges Even)... More guests will be confirmed soon.

Well, he has Michael Kiske and Jørn Lande - these are the two keys for me on an album like this.

Sounds like it might be something quite epic then. I would prefer it to be released all as one, but I can see the label releasing each parts a year apart like the first metal opera.

Yeah, only the first opera was really fresh and epic back then while the crow was so plain and mostly boring that calling it Avantasia should be made an eighth deadly sin. And knowing Tobi's ways to exaggerate everything he ever says by a factor of at least Pi, the new material is probably going to follow in the crow's footsteps with the same and very same song-structure spread out over another two albums further tainting the legacy.

I fail to be tickled.

Ooh, thought I was gonna cry at Tobias' prediction of himself as a struggling musician in the future, unable to afford to pay for Michael Kiske's new gold-plated toilet so he'll come on an Avantasia album. Maybe you'll have to include some more of those Coldplay-style songs for hit singles, eh Toby?

Disclaimer: Negative sentiment towards Mr Sammet will be retracted in the event of an album half as decent as the first Avantasia double album being released.

You really think that can happen? I remember a quote of Tobi saying that back when he wrote the original Avantasia he was too inexperienced to write anything decent and now he's a way better musician capable of 'real' songwriting. Something along those lines. And then knowing that in his point of view, people that don't like his work can very well fuck off and die take their opinion elswhere, I don't think he even wants to make decent music anymore. And the latest two Edguy, Lost in Space and The Scarecrow just beg to prove my point.

Maybe a return to the Epic Metal Opera? The continuation of the Scarecrow story promises to be good, since Tobi is working hard on the production like he says. Well see...

Actually, I included that disclaimer mostly out of irony. I very much doubt that, come the release of the next Avantasia project, I shall be eating my words. Mr Sammet has not discovered 'real' songwriting so much as discovered 'real' money and the fact that the more you force your music down to the lowest common denominator, the more people will buy it (for example, how many people eat at McDonald's every day, or visit Disneyland each year). And you're right, he's something of an arrogant cur isn't he.

I'm looking forward to this release. I can see why a lot of people hated the Scarecrow, as it is pretty experimental, and you can't EXACTLY call it power metal, but, I appreciated the music that was written for what it was, even I can't label it. That's what hurts a lot of albums, labels. Like in the recent Behemoth review, Nergal said that albums would be much better off if they weren't considered something so distinct, and instead were considered part of a whole.

Either way, I have never been disappointed by Tobi, and I doubt this album will do anything to change that. Tobias is a genius in my eyes, and I respect the decisions he makes.

Everything Sammet says nowadays is bullshit. Only arrogant and hollow words.

A double album? A single album would have been already more than enough.

Well, I really don't know what the hell with happen with this new album (or albums), I liked "The Scarecrow", it wasn't THAT amazing but I liked it in the end. Yes, Tobi has a big mouth but if he can create another kickass comeback, then you all have to shut up... but that is unlikely to happen.

I can only speak for myself here but what I find eternally boring is songs that grow up to power in the intro and then calm down before the first word is sung. And on The Scarecrow Tobi did it in almost every song. Always the same structure. Intro - verse - refrain - verse - refrain - bridge - refrain - end. And don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that structure per se. Only if a whole album is structured that way AND all the songs do the powerup - powerdown - sing - powerup - powerdown thing then it gets eternally boring. There's even one or the other good song on that album. Devil In The Belfry could be named here. Or Another Angel Down. But Even those have the same inherent structure as all the others and would if you ask me not even justify a single release. Much less a whole album of those.

Surely wait for this. The thing I like in Avantasia is the power of their melodious song. if the song line is good no matter the structure it is, it will remain good.

Fuck yeah! I won't put my money on it being as good as The Scarecrow because that was such a pleasant surprise, but damned if I'm not happy to hear this. Tobi is a champion for moving away from the style of those horrid Metal Opera albums.

Then again, who knows, maybe we will get two more gems like the Scarecrow :headbang:
