Therion - New CD/DVD Details Revealed

Nuclear Blast press release

After the phenomenal last studio album "Gothic Kabbalah" (2007), easily Therion's most stunning effort since "Theli", and the follow-up live CD "Live Gothic" (2008), Therion mastermind and only remaining founding member Christofer Johnsson decided to go for a rather special project: the band's appearance at the remarkable and renowned International Opera Festival in Miskolc, Hungary in 2007 was taped on and off stage to preserve a truly unique classic metal event for the Therion fanbase! The first part - dubbed "Classical adventures" - features some of Christofer's favourite composers (especially his alltime fave, Wagner) and does completely without guitars or any metal instrumentation whatsoever. Just orchestra and choir. Part two, "Therion songs", delivers exactly that: finest Therion material performed by the band, a huge orchestra and choir. Rounding off "The Miskolc Experience" is an entertaining documentary which gives insight in the complicated organisation and the no less complicated execution with all ups and downs for the involved crew and musicians.

"The Miskolc Experience" is the testimony of the brilliant Johnsson/Niemann/Niemann/Karlsson Therion line-up which Christofer Johnsson decided to dissolve in late 2008. This chapter of Therion is closed, a new era is about to begin - and Therion will soon open the book once again!

Cool! Although I rather hoped this news will be about a new album, not a live recording.

Sounds like what Epica have just done, who's next to use an orchestra?

Metal bands using an orchestra is becoming more and more common, indeed. I usually see it as a bad sign because metal albums that are heavy on orchestration are usually lacking in the guitars and drums department. I like keyboards in metal but I'm not a big fan of over-the-top bombastic stuff. Just write great guitar riffs and solos, good bass lines and impressive drumming, top it with great vocals, and you don't need an orchestra. Bands that use an orchestra are often mediocre in the metal department. I sometimes have the feeling some bands use an orchestra to compensate for their poor ability on their instruments or to try to hide their not impressive playing skills.

Epica recoreded their show at the Miskolc International Opera Festival in 2008, a year after Therion did the same thing at the same festival in 2007, so Therion actually did it first...just took longer to release it.

Not that I am saying Epica is copying Therion. I'm just saying that they were both guests at the same festival and were invited to do a very similar thing. Judging from what I have heard both pulled their performances off masterfully, and I look forward to hearing releases from both bands

Therion its my favourite band ever but.. i think that they should put a better setlist for their "symphonic experiments"..

In their 2 symphonic gigs they focus A LOT on the orchestral work, and their sound quality and feeling is missed in various songs... besides the camera angles doesn't have different angles to focus on the band members

Maybe using a two/ three days recording and leaving the classical themes as a bonus

I know that its a very hard and expensive thing, but ITS THERION.. The inventors of the Symphonic Metal and they were with THEIR BEST LINEUP ever.. ( Niemans Brothers, Karlson, Leven, Lewis, Shaw, Lilja... )

If Metallica, Rhapsody and Within Temptation can.. Why Therion can't?

Something like this would be MY DREAM THERION'S CONCERT:

DISK ONE - "Entering the Depths of Eternal Darkness"

Intro
01. Therion - The Gates to a'Arab Zaraq Are Open
02. Therion - The Quiet Desert
03. Therion - Enter Transcendental Sleep

13. Therion - The Blood Of Kingu
14. Therion - Nightside Of Eden

Ending
15. Therion - Raven Of Dispersion
16. Therion - Eye of Shiva
17. Therion - Grand Finale

DIsc TWO - "Symphoni Draconis Inferno"

Intro
01. Therion - Sirius B
02. Therion - Eternal return
03. Therion - Muspelheim
