This is a thread to see what people's all time favorite albums are they can be from any genre even if they're not metal that's fine. Please only pick no more then 10 albums and explain why they are your favorite.
My 10 Favorite albums in no particular order are:
Dream Theater: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - When I heard this album I was in grade 7 and at the time my version of metal consisted of only bands like System of a Down, In Flames, and Shadows Fall. When I turned this album on my entire world changed it opened me up into the genre of Progressive Metal. This album contains 2 discs and both are amazing. My favorite songs on it are The Glass Prison, Dissapear, and Disc 2.

Ayreon: The Human Equation - This two disc album contains so many of my favorite singers such as Devin Townsend and Mikael Akerfeldt. It's a great progressive metal concept album. Lyrically this is probably my favorite album of all time because it tells such a great story.

The Mars Volta: De-Loused In the Comatorium - This Prog Rock album is off the wall and contains great jam and ambience sections. This album is also extremely sporadic and wierd and that's what I like about it.

Tool: Ænima - This is one of the best albums I have ever heard every song on the album is amazing and I can't think of anything on it I'd like to change it gives off such a cool vibe.

Blind Guardian: Imaginations From The Otherside - Most people say that Nightfall In Middle-Earth is the best Blind Guardian album but for me this album is my favorite Power Metal record ever. It has everything I want to hear in an album great leads and big chours. This album contains so many great songs like Bright Eyes, Script For My Requim, Mordred's Song, and Born In a Morning Hall.

In Flames: Colony - This album contains some great melodies and is the last great album from Melodeath band In Flames. The acoustic passages on this album are what make me like this album so much. They can take acoustic interludes and make them so good that they don't seem like filler.

Iron Maiden: Powerslave - This is my favorite classic metal album it contains nothing but memorable songs and riffs. This album also includes my favorite Iron Maiden epic The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Megadeth: Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? - This is my all time favorite thrash album and one of the most aggressive albums I have ever heard. On this album you can really feel how pissed off Dave Mustaine is and every song on the album is amazing.

Opeth: Damnation/Deliverance - This album contains one half of really great mellow songs that I can't get enough of and the second half of the album is heavy as fuck. This album contains both extremes of music which is why I like it so much.

Symphony X: The Divine Wings of Tragedy - Another great progressive album that contains some great keyboards and neoclassical shredding by Michael Romeo.

ok i also have my 10 favs but they are not in order

1-stratovarius,episode: ok maybe this one is in order,'cos for me this is the best stratovarius album of all time and also my favourite of every band...when i bought it i didn't knew about them the only thing i knew was my favourite song destiny but when i heard episode i was shocked and know is my favourite album of everytime.
2-iron maiden, somewhere in time: it's my favourite album of iron maiden 'cos all the songs are very catchy and because they were in their highest level and because songs like "wasted years"and "the loneliness of the long distance runner" are very hard to forget and also 'cos they play my favourite solo in "caught somewhere in time".
3-helloween,the master of the rings: when i look at any web page about helloween they always said that helloween were better with michael kiske on vocals and kai hansen on guitars but for me they are wrong 'cos i think that andi is a lot of better than michael and i love all the songs from this album.
4-sonata arctica, silence: again for me this is their best work 'cos you'll always remember songs that you can go crazy like "weballergy","black sheep","the end of this chapter","land of the free","san sebastian(revisited) and "wolf and raven", and you also have songs in which you can cry like a baby like "last drop falls","sing in silence" and my favourite "tallulah".
5-sonata arctica, ecliptica: their first and one of their best 'cos i has all you need strong songs and sadly ballads and is also an excellente debut album.
6-stratovarius,destiny: one of their best too 'cos it has my favourite song ever (destiny) and also have my favourite ballad (4000 rainy nights) and the other songs are awesome too.
7-edguy, the savage poetry (2000): it's been in my hands for only a week but this group is awesome i love all the song and i'm ready to bought all of their records
8-angra, hunters and prey (mini cd):jaja again the discussion about the old members 'cos i'm not too old for me is better the new line-up than the old one....ok this cd is very good one, live and learn a catchy song and very good, bleeding heart for me is the best ballad of every genre in music, and rebirth and heroes of sand both acoustic are a better version than the normal one so that's why i love this cd
9-dragonforce,sonic firestorm: in this album they have a lot if excellente songs and also 'cos i think that dragonforce will be the best band in the metal scene in a very short future.
10-HIM,deep shadows & brilliant highlights: is the best of HIM in my opinion 'cos i love this band 'cos i mix love with death and other emotions of the life that are very bizarre or too separated each one from the other.
bye maybe you get bored of all this stuff but i like to write:maniac:

4. Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin. This was my first death metal album, and the song Enemy Within, is what got me into real metal.

i will not put this in order...

Moonspell - Wolfheart(gothic metal masterpiece, the album that would change the gothic metal scene forever )

Korn - Untouchables(yeah nu metal so what? one of the best albuns ive heard, it was a change back then in Korn's sound that some fans despised others loved)

Arch Enemy - Anthems of Rebellion(first album ive heard of them, one of the stronguest albuns ive heard, great songs and awesome growls by a female singuer)

Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace(cradle have a lot of good albuns to pick from, but dusk and her embrace is one of the heaviest albuns they have, the last to be known as "almost black metal" xD lolol)

Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant(Dimmu's Masterpiece, ive always loved classical music, and when you join classical music with black metal its got to be a perfect work)

Bloodbath - Ressurection Through Carnage(bloodbath is one of the best bands ive heard in a long time, either with Mikael or with Peter Tagtren they just DEATH METAL-ME xD)

Katatonia - Viva Emptiness(this is my favorite album, it helped me a lot in a difficult situation, some sick depressive songs, but that is katatonia style aint it?)

Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor(lol do i have to explain this one? PERFECT! 10/10! NEVERMORE'S MASTERPIECE AND ONE OF THE BEST ALBUNS OF ALL TIME! Jeff Loomis' work is impressive, awesome solos, i could believe the album when ive heard it)

Moonspell - Memorial(their darkest and heavir work to date, there are no slow songs here that could take someone to labbel them as gothic-DOOM metal..just heavy fast-forward songs, another 10/10 album, amazing!)

Hypocrisy - Virus(the album that showed me Hypocrisy, loved it really, i was not certain about this one, Virus or Charater from Dark Tranquillity..oh well)

There are a million threads like this going around AND there's a space on your PROFILE for this kinda stuff.
Man, spamming kills forums.

This thread should be closed.

Yeah, but this thread lets us discuss why we love the albums so much

Here's my top 10:

Vanishing Point - Embrace The Silence
My all time fave album. Not a single bad song on it, it's a shame they're hardly known outside Australia.

Vanishing Point - Tangled In Dream
This album has really grown on me recently. I got this album after hearing Sonata Arctica's cover of Two Minds, One Soul and loved it

Masterplan - Aeronautics
I love the melodies on this album, and Jorn Lande is a legendary singer. Shame he's left now

Sonata Arctica - Reckoning Night
The first Sonata album I bought. This album contains most of my fave Sonata songs including Misplaced, Ain't Your Fairytale, My Selene and White Pearl, Black Oceans...

Russell Allen & Jorn Lande - The Battle
I heard this album was very good, so I decided to look into it. As soon as I heard the album for the first time it immediately became one of my fave albums

DragonForce - Inhuman Rampage
When I first heard this album, I was very dissapointed with it. Since then it's really grown on me, and now I like it more than the other two albums

Eternal Tears Of Sorrow - Before The Bleeding Sun
One of my fave albums mainly because of the tracks Red Dawn Rising and Angelheart, Ravenheart. The choirs in these songs are amazing. The other tracks are good as well

Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis
The album that got me into raw death metal, with it's catchy and aggressive riffs and vocals. Love it!

Vader - Litany
The only full album I own by Vader, but I like it alot! I'm off to see them on their UK tour in October

Machine Men - Elegies
Catchy melodies, great Bruce Dickinson-like vocals make this one of my top 10.

This thread is okay because people give explanation

3. Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper. Everything is so perfect on this album, the solos, the riffs, the drums.
or
7. Iron Maiden - Powerslave. Great melodies, great riffs, great drums.

I won't quote every explanation for everyone's favourite album, but it's always the same kind of post, which doesn't lead to any real discussion. It's obvious that if you love an album you'll post it has the best drums/riffs/etc on earth... But sometimes having a favourite album is rather a matter of feelings and no matter how hard you try, you'll always end up with those clichés (best drums/riffs and so on), that's why I think it's pointless :

Whatever...

In no particular order of priority:

1. Sieges Even - The Art Of Navigating By The Stars

"The Art Of Navigating By The Stars" is a cleverly written album with very high quality song compositions. The album contains plenty of intricate time signatures, creative rhythms and a variety of excellent guitar solos! The menu is filled with layers of acoustic guitars and sugarcoated with the clean tone of electric guitars. Although vocals rule and the guitar work is very impressive, the bass and drums are ever present and provide much of the entertainment on hand. Everything is so very cleverly prepared and skillfully tied together. For instance, there are moments in each sequence that I simply can't wait to hear and the build-up to each segment is just so well orchestrated as to give you a sense of complete satisfaction and jubilation every time they come around. I'm talking about truly unforgettable moments like; the chorus to "Stigmata," or the classical guitar solos found in both "Blue Wide Open" and "Lighthouse." And there many more moments to speak of...

Rare are the albums that only get better and better the more you listen to them over time. The Art of Navigating By the Stars is such an album, a progressive rock album for the ages. I can't imagine ever getting tired of it.

2. Russell Allen & Jorn Lande - The Battle

This is by far the best straight ahead metal album I own. Russell Allen of Symphony X and Jorn Lande of Masterplan both teamed up for this Magnus Karllson project and together they created music of pure energy. Once "Another Battle" gets going, you know you're going to get one hell of a workout out of this album. Very uplifting vibe. In fact, The Battle is my FAV workout album, just perfect for a one hour session. It's energy keeps me going and going, I hit the replay button and I can go another hour! The music is so uplifting that it keeps me battling for hours...

3. Kamelot - The Black Halo

This was another very sweet release with a very good variety of music within the progressive power metal genre. The album contains some very enjoyable tracks that will satisfy one's metal appetite immediately. Rarely have I bought an album that begs one to listen to it again and again. The Black Halo is such an album! It is not so much the originality of The Black Halo that draws you in but the overall care to detail and flow of the album as a whole. All of the arrangements on the album are superb, the instrumental interludes are classic and what to say about those cool little fills, there is just so much one can absorb in one sitting.

4. Riverside - Second Life Syndrome

This band hails from Poland and was the discovery of the year for me. With only two studio albums in their repertoire, the first being in 2004 and this one in 2005, they are effectively newcomers to the progressive metal scene. I discovered them in October 2005 and Second Life Syndrome got a whole lot more spins out of me than anything else I got last year and that includes Opeth's Ghost Reveries. It is a most diversified progressive metal album, going from the most soothing ethereal musical passages I've heard in quite some time to some truly excellent aggressive musical moments. Riverside has become one of my FAV bands of the new Millenium. Outstanding musical vision I tell you!

5. Testament - The Gathering

Testament's little gathering made waves in the underground metal scene in 1999. The music is technical but maintains its thrashiness from beginning to end with a good variety of different tempos and catchy hooks. At moments I'm reminded of Iced Earth and sometimes Nevermore comes to mind, but then Sentenced pops up with some clearly defined death metal moments thrown in for good measure. The Gathering combines some pure moments of ultra-speed metal with death metal. There lies the beauty of the album for me. I can't recommend it enough to those who like their metal extremely fast, furious and brutal. That's the variety of the musical styles you'll find on this album. It's all here, on one single disc!

6 . Stratovarius - Elements Part 1

On this album, the Stratovarius pristine trademark sound is alive and well. Intro to most songs are often atmospheric and emotional, Stratovarius has always excelled in this department, appropriately preparing the listener for what is to come. The band mixes aggressiveness with some heavy passages and occasional acoustic ones, moving from hyper-speed technicality to soft atmospheric moments and heavy melodic ones. Sometimes, they accomplish this all on the same track...such as on the Epic title track: "Elements." This is Stratovarius at their very best, instrumentally, progressively and in the Power Metal Department as well.

7. Charon - Songs For The Sinners

J.P. Leppäluoto writes sad grief-ridden songs and performs them with his deep soothing voice and with what I call an upbeat attitude, its just perfect for this genre and style of music. Energetic Gothic Rock/Metal with clean deep male lead vocals and some sweet female vocals added on for good measure. One rarely comes across such a fine genuine gem of musical brilliance and overall quality that leaves you completely speechless after just one spin. Songs for the Sinners is Charon's 5th studio release and when it comes to gothic metal, you'd be hard pressed to find anything better than this. Bands like HIM and Entwine are perhaps a little on the lighter side of the goth scale while Charon (pronounced Kharon) are definitely on the heavier side of things. There's also a good variety of keys used on this album, including an organ, sitar and cello that are used most effectively here. The nuances and atmospheres created on this album are some of the best you will find on any melancholic metal album.

8. Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done

This is my all-time FAV Gothenburg Metal album. No question about it. This album is just so damn good from the get-go that I've found myself listening to it regularly - without skipping a single track - since it came out in 2002. Dark Tranquillity have created music on Damage Done that encompasses so much of what I want to hear every time I throw a Melodic Death Metal album in my CD player, more-so than any album by Children of Bodom and Kalmah. This album rules!

9. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing

What attracted me most to this album was the overall quality of the songwriting, the inherent emotion-energy found therein and the good long-winded ambient space-rock moments as well. Steve Wilson went further than he ever has and in directions that many would have thought he'd never go. This risk taking attitude has helped Steven Wilson create and produce one hell-of-an album, truly one of the better prog albums of 2005!

10. Jesse Cook - The Ultimate Collection

This is mostly instrumental music, but don't let that little detail trouble you, Jesse Cook's fingers do all the talking anyway. Jesse Cook mixes rumba with flamenco to create musical magic. His music is mostly up-tempo and uplifting. He mixes acoustic guitars, bass, percussions, synthesizers, world beat samples, violins and more percussion instruments such as djembes and guiro. To create more seductive melodies he will mix all of this with Middle Eastern influences. If you like classical music, instrumental music or world beat music, you will totally enjoy what Jesse Cook has to offer on this double disc collection of his best material. Clever, seductive, sensual and energetic music, guaranteed to get you in the mood during a cozy romantic evening dinner...

1. Sentenced: The Cold white light; my favourite band and my favourite album. Maybe there is a song or two that I don't like so much, but others are great!

2. Wintersun: Wintersun; I think that I don't have to explain why. I think that everyone knows this one...

3. Katatonia: Discouraged ones; I like all Katatonia stuff; the newand the old stile, but I think that this one is their best: their best songs in one album. Grat!

4. Burzum: Hlidskjalf; something different from his and other's stuff. I must confess, that I haven't heard it for a long time now, but I still know the feeling I get when I listen to this one.

5. Apocalyptica: Cult; makes me calm, my emotions get free while listening to this one. For me, no.1 of Apocalyptica

6. Shaaman: Reason; this is my first metal album I've heard, Shaaman introduced me to metal...it's their fault that I'm into metal now! . so yeah, I still like this one like the first day that I've heard it.

7. Ajattara: Kuolema; first black metal band, first black metal album I've heard, and yeah, they are so great!

8. Hypocrisy: Hypocrisy; Maybe I could give them on a higher place, but for now, they are here... lyrics are different than I'm used to hear (or do just I see and hear them different?!) vocals are special... I think that i don't have to say anything else...

9. Saturnus: Paradise belongs to you; can't explain why, but when I need to hear it, I listen to it and I get a good feeling abou everyting...

10. I'm going to leave this one opened. I can't say about no. 10, because I can't decide whish one would be. I like all albums of groups that I listen... so,....I'll keep this place for all other albums.

Ok I tried to blend together my ALL TIME favourite with my CURRENT favourites. Here goes!!!

In somewhat random order...

Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes:
This was my first REAL exposure to metal on a serious level. What a start! Every song on this album blew my mind and I knew I needed to re-think my opinion of music. After intensely listening to metal for several years I can safely say that nothing has come close to impressing me more than this album right here. I'm sure there is some sentimental reason for that but even so, it's a masterpiece on it's own.

Sinergy - Suicide By My Side:
The crowning glory of my favourite band. All instruments are at their best (some of my favourite Sinergy guitar solos are on this album) and Kim really stepped up her performance. Her vocals are so unique here as her lyrics are so deeply personal. The end result is a non-stop beating of metal.

Kamelot - The Fourth Legacy:
This album is so special to me, so completely inspirational. Every song is a masterpiece of power metal and every musician is at their best. This is actually the first time I ever really paid attention to drumming; the first time I considered learning to the drums! All hail Casey Grillo and Kamelot!

Blind Guardian - Somewhere Far Beyond:
Come journey with me to the land of the Bard

After Forever - Remagine:
A current favourite; still unsure if it will take a place among my greatest of all time. It was my favourite album released that year and left (nearly) all others in the dust. After Forever used to be a band I liked ok but with this album they have proven themselves among the leaders of personal, mature, progressive, METAL.

Beyond Twilight - Section X:
Another top album of 2005. Like nothing I've ever heard - this album made me appreciate prog. It's so dark, fun, and heavy, all at once. Listening to this album is like listening to the only copy left in the world

Therion - Theli:
I could really have put any Therion album here, especially "Secret of the Runes" or "Sirius B" or "Vovin." We all know how and why Therion is amazing but I eventually chose Theli because it straddles the line between old and new, between the way metal was and the breakthrough of a new way that metal can be. Listening to Theli is like listening to history being written.

Hibria - Defying the Rules:
Hibria has breathed a fresh breath of life into Heavy Metal. The masters have arrived with this album. Hibria will reign supreme!

Wuthering Heights - Far From the Maddening Crowd:
This is a "current" favourite but it's slowly slipping into the land of "greatest of all time" albums. If you haven't heard and you appreciate power metal or folk metal in any way then you're missing out. There is so much energy behind this recording, I feel like the guys are all in the studio playing together at the same time (with a big group of excited fans watching).

Nightwish - Wishmaster:
I saved this for last on purpose. Every time I listen to this masterpiece I am more and more convinced that it's one of the best power metal albums ever released. I have had an interesting journey listening to Nightwish, taking a turn having each album as my favourite. Over the last year, however, I have firmly decided that Wishmaster reigns supreme in my ear and hopefully in the power metal history books!

.........Wanted to include: Agalloch - The Mantle; Demons & Wizards - S/T; Edenbridge - Shine; Edenbridge - The Grand Design; Tristania - ALL; Star One; Dream Evil............

Lost To Apathy
My 10 favourite Metal albums

Shape Of Despair - Angels Of Distress Perfect. Dark, intimidating, bleak, atmospheric, long, heavy...so much can be said about this album.

Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery Quite a techincal album. Brilliant melodies and musicianship, it's not considered a masterpiece by luck.

Opeth - Blackwater Park We've come to a time in which is almost inevitable to see Opeth mentioned in this kind of lists. This one is my personal pick.

Nile - Black Seeds Of Vengeance Very unique album, took me a while to get into it, but I rate it high now.

Behemoth - Demigod Death Metal by masters. Suprising relsease, stands out as a mid-paced but brutal album, which is quite hard to achieve.

My Dying Bride - Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light In my opinion the grand opus by a band that I love, but reckon to be inconsistent.

Lacuna Coil - In A Reverie I don't care what people think about Lacuna Coil now, this album was a masterpiece when it came out and it still is.

In Flames - Colony Full of great tracks and lyrics.

Pantheist - O Solitude You have to listen to believe how good it is. Transcends the average Funeral Doom Metal.

Moonspell - The Antidote Stellar work by one of the most amazing bands ever.

Almost made it: Darkane - Rusted Angel, Candlemass - Tales Of Creation, The Monolith Deathcult - The White Crematorium, Evoken - Quietus, Arch Enemy - Wages Of Sin, Slayer - Reign In Blood

My top 10 (with some highlights each album:))

1. Nightwish- Oceanborn : Awesome! That's what I can say about this album. All members of Nightwish have done so well, especially Tuomas. What he showed us through this masterpiece proved that he is one of the best keyboard players and songwriters in the world. And of course, that would be a big mistake if I forgot to mention Tarja and her angelic voice. Tarja had a very high class of singing soprano, which made me admire her (it's a pity that she is no longer in Nightwish!). She's sung so beautifully and emotionally. Comparing the vocal part in this album with ones in other albums of Nightwish, we'll see that it's the best. With this album, the band really succeeded in creating what I often humorously call "beautiful power metal".
Highlights: Stargazers, Sacrement Of Wilderness, Passion And The Opera, Swanheart, Sleeping Sun

2. Tristania - Widow's Weeds : This album has a real gothic atmosphere. It's like when you walk in the streets in cold winter days and there's no one around you. Whenever I listen to this album I've got a feeling of loss, sadness and solitude. The lyrics are so meaningful and suit the music well. There's no doubt that this is a must-have to all gothic metal fans.
Highlights: Pale Enchantress, Midwinter Tears, Angellore

3. Rhapsody- Power Of The Dragonflame : To me, this is the best Rhapsody album. The music (especially the guitar sounds) sometime got really heavier than in the previous albums. And the vocals, as someone in Metalstorm has written in a review, was close to black metal (in When Demons Awake)! I like all songs of this abum, especially the epic "Gargoyles, Angels Of Darkness".
Highlights: Knightrider Of Doom, March Of The Swordmaster, Gargoyles, Angels Of Darkness, The Pride Of The Tyrant

4. Dark Moor- Gates Of Oblivion: Another masterpiece of symphonic power metal genre. The epic music Dark Moor created in this album(and also in The Hall Of The Olden Dreams) could be considered the same with Rhapsody, using lots of choir parts and orchestra parts. The unique point here is the vocal part of Elisa. She is a female vocal who sings like a... male vocal! The first time I listened to Dark Moor I thought that it's a man singing. She only used her female voice in the sweet ballad "Your Symphony".
Highlights: A New World, Starmaker(Elbereth), By The Strand Path Of Destiny, The Night Of The Age, Your Symphony

5. Dream Theater- Images And Words: Although prog-metal is not my favourite genre, this album impresses me so much. It brings to me a strange feeling. I can't expain exactly what it is. It's something that makes me regret, makes me sad. Maybe you'll understand more about what I say when listening to this album, especially songs like Pull Me Under or Another Day. Anyway this is a good album with the high-quality performances of all the band.
Highlights: Pull Me Under, Another Day, Surrounded, Learning To Live

6. Secret Sphere- Mistress Of The Shadowlight : This is not an album that made by a famous band, and the album itself is not a well-known one but it's the one that brought me into the world of power metal. I first listened to it as it was played on radio and I was really impressed by the symphonic sounds the band had made. If you're a fan of bands like Rhapsody or Dark Moor just listen to this album.
Highlights: Age Of Wizard, Recall Of The Valkyria, On The Wings Of Sun

7. Haggard- Awaking The Centuries: A creative album of a creative big band. In this one, the band really found a balance between the classical music and metal. Here we can hear the harsh vocals of Nasseri with the melodious sounds from the violins, the double-bass kicking sounds along with the beautiful piano notes... all of them created a colourful picture. The lyrics here, which were written in English, German and Latin, are also amazing things, continue to deliver the story of Nostradamus.
Highlights: The Final Victory, Awaking The Centuries, In A Fullmoon Procession

8. Within Temptation- Mother Earth: My favourite Within Temptation album! I think you'll agree with me that this is a very emotional one. Without the grunts(that used to appear in Enter and The Dance), the vocal parts were all done by Sharon. Her voice suits so well with the atmospheric genre the band played in this album. It mixed with another instruments creating a beautiful and velvety music. (For example, the songs such as Our Farewell, Never-ending Story or In Perfect Harmony). On another side, songs like Caged and The Promise are a little harder(but still beautiful!). I also like the melodic guitar solos in Our Farewell and In Perfect Harmony (not fast but so effective!). And there was one thing that was done better than in Enter: the production, really clearer.
Highlights: Mother Earth, Ice Queen, Our Farewell, Deceiver Of Fools, In Perfect Harmony

9. In Flames- The Jester Race: I think this is a typical melodic-death metal album. The band has created a rhythmic and head-banging music that influenced to many bands later. Besides, you can also find some beautiful melodies in track 2- The Jesters Dance. Probably, this is the best In Flames album.
Highlights: The Jesters Dance, Artifacts Of The Black Rain, Lord Hypnos, Dead Eternity, December Flower

10. Trans-Siberian Orchestra- Beethoven's Last Night : A great concept album about the mysterious death of Beethoven. In the album there're some songs based on the symphonies of Beethoven and they're really good.
Highlights: The Moment, The Dreams Of The Candlelight, I'll Keep Your Secrets, A Last Illusion, Who Is This Child

@duyhung. I was VERY tempted to include Widow's Weeds and Mother Earth on my list, as you did yours. If I was doing a top 20 albums they would most definitely be included!! (Same with Hall of Olden Dreams probably). Great list; and a great blend of genres

Thanks for appreciating my chart. So why don't you have an extra chart beside your top 10 ?

Opeth - Still Life
This album is one of the dearest pieces of metal to me. Its tunes are the ones closest to perfection for me. A real masterpiece IMO and the Opeth album I struggled the most to get.

Agathodaimon - Serpant's Embrace
A nice piece of work. One of the first black metal albums I heard.

Tristania - Beyond The Veil
I used to listen to it 24/7 a few years ago. Back then I was all about witchcraft and the occult and found this album exceptionally good. I still love it.

Opeth - Morningrise
No doubt one of Opeth's finest work. Listen to the album. There's little I can say to describe its sound. It really bugs me though how some dudes from the US underrate it.

Dream Theater - Awake
A progressive metal classic. This album has been a great inspiration to me and my band. IMO Dream Theater's greatest work.

Ayreon - The Human Equation
Hey Endoftherainbow! Yeah, this album is one of my favorites too. I got into it because I heard Akerfeldt played the parts of Fear. I had no idea so many great musicians were gathered to perform.

Demons & Wizards - self titled
This is what happens when Iced Earth and Blind Guardian colide! For me, power metal cannot reach a higher plane. The intrumentation and vocals combined left me breathless upon first listenng.

Therion - A'arab Zaraq - Lucid Dreaming
A typical Therion album IMO. Beyond criticism, undefinable, unpredictable and generally a masterpiece. I really can't say it's the Swedish masters' finest work, for each album seems to level, on the top!

Godgory - Sea Of Dreams
Few people know about this masterfull piece of melodic death metal, nevertheless, they're on of my favorite death metal bands and this album is their early peak IMO.

Green Carnation - Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness
"Trve Norwaigan Progressive Metal" is what I would call this record holding single. It is a journey into insanity and oblivion. When I was suffering from insomnia and did "light-therapy", this album helped a lot.

So here's my 10. When I was doing 5 or 6 i thought "Man, where the hell am I gonna come up with 5 more?"
Now I can think of at least another 10, but that's not what the topic wants...

righty then, i will have a go at this but i bet after i have posted it i will realise i have missed an album out
but here we go. it is in alphabetical order by band

Angra - Temple Of Shadows
-i havent known Angra as long as i have a lot of other bands, but they really impressed me and this album did most of all as this is my favorite Angra album. they have such a different style and sound to other bands, Angra are always brilliant to listen to.
the first six or so tracks on this album are the best but the album is consistantly really good

Blind Guardian - A Night At The Opera
-i think this was the second Blind Guardian album i heard. my favorite Blind Guardian album is a toss up between this and 'Imaginations From The Other Side' but i have gone for this one
i love the vocals, i love all of the songs - this really is one lf my all time favorite albums. 'And Then There Was Silence' is one of my all time favorite songs as well. you cant get much of a better album then this in my opinion

Cradle Of Filth - Cruelty And The Beast
-back before the 'Midian' album, this band was really one of the best for sure. 'V Empire' is probably my all time favorite EP
this album takes the sound a bit further though. its a concept album on the Countess Elizabeth Bathory and so is rather intesting to go through the lyrics with
this was their last album with Nick Barker and just went downhill from there in my opinion. it is a real shame what the band is now - but this album will always be such a classic

Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
-Emperor were my all time favorite band probably a year ago, i have since listened to less and less black metal but this album always has to be in my favorites album list
this is my favorite Emperor album and will probably always be able to unlock certain memories for me and be one of my favorites. this album just blew me away when i heard it for the first time

Gamma Ray - No World Order
-this is probably my favorite Gamma Ray album even though it is very very hard to pick
it is slightly more of a heavy metal album then the previous albums, but this is still a power metal album
when we get to 'New World Order' the album just picks up more and every track is a good one
this is probably the msot solid album from Gamma Ray

Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part II
-haha well. Helloween are my favorite band, yes - and i suppose this is my favorite album although they do have a lot of other fantastic albums
'Eagle Fly Free' is just so powerful for me even now after hearing it a million times. powerful in the sence that whenever i hear it i am just overcome with all these emotions and i have no idea where they come from at all
back in 1988 (the year i was born) this would have been such a new thing. i love the sound of old albums and thinking how they would be recieved back in their day
the track 'Keeper Of The Seven Keys' is another of them special songs that you just have to mention its name and anyone that knows it just knows..
also after seeing Helloween at the begining of this year i have actually been able to sing along with all the classics - most of the songs from this album included. it was just the best night of my life

Iron Maiden - Number Of The Beast
-even though i have known Iron Maiden for a long long time, for some reason i never pushed myself to get into them when i was discovering real metal. i cannot imagine my CD collecion without them now though
this is probably their best still but is closly rivaled by 'Brave New World' - what an amazing album that is too
more or less every song on this album is a classic but the album finishes with one of the best heavy metal songs ever written 'Hallowed Be thy Name' - just listen to it and it does the talking for itself. the guitars sound just amazing - it is one of my all time favorite albums definatly

Judas Priest - Painkiller
-if Helloween was just that little bit less inticing, the Priest would be my all time favorite band. i love these guys so much. for me they invented heavy metal how it is now and influenced everyone who says they are in a metal band some way or another
'Painkiller' is the first with Scott drumming and allowed them to move into the more modern sound of metal as it was then, and wow - what a result you get when you cross Judas Priest and fast drumming
the title track and this album are possibly my favorite song and album of all time. i really dont think i can hear anything better then this

Masterplan - Aeronautics
-what a super band.. two members from Helloween and Jørn Lande! Jørn Lande is one of my favorite singers of all time. i cant decide which Masterplan album i like best, but this has my favorite two Masterplan songs on it - 'Crimson Rider' and 'Black In The Burn' the ten minute epic
this is finally a 'super band' that i actually think are that good - it is just such a shame Jørn had left. i just hope the band can go on as strong as they have been

Strapping Young Lad - City
-this really is a fantastic album isnt it. just listen to it, its amazing. i love the cross between industrial metal and thrash? whatever you want to call it - this album sounds like nothing before, it is something new
the tracks are very fast, it is the first Strapping album with Gene drumming and you can hear him!
tracks like 'Detox' abd 'All Hail The New Flesh' are all a metaler could ever want. haha. fantastic album

Clutch - Robot Hive Exodous
- An amazing Groove hard rock album that blew me away the first time i listened to it, not really metal but still a heavy record that has been in my cd player for about two months now. The perfect party, chill or alone time record. Not bad tune on this record.

Bruce Dickinson - The chemical wedding

- A return to classic heavy metal, had to order this album special over the internet considering i live in a town of like 800 people. Metal to people over here is AC DC and montley crue. A perfect form of true heavy metal. Without all the fruity Symphony like choruses and Frilly shirts ( This means you Rhapsody ) A true heavy metal record. The guitars are low and sludgy, Sabbath like. And bruces voice haden't sounded this good since seventh son. This record kicks the shit out of Blazes effortd with maiden.

Black Label Society - 1919 Eternal

- Zakks best album, wothout one single piano ballad. Straight up metal . His vocals and guitar work on this album are the best out of all of his albums. Although every BLS album is different , this is the one that all metalheads can appreciate.

Opeth - Blackwater Park

- No one who has heard this record even needs to read on. A beautiful peice of music that you can listen to over and over and......

Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder

- Listen to the double bass and guitars on this album, Amazing songwriting and Alexies voice all make for a killer black, death, thrash and whatever other genre you wanna throw in album.

Rebel meets Rebel

- This was the the band lineup for Pantea ( Dime , Vinnie and Rex ) Doing country metal tunes with David Allen Coe. now as a huge Pantera fan who grew up listening to country ( until my first metal record Rust in Peace changed all of that ) I couldn't wait to pick up this album. I had first read about it on this site. its an amazing party record with Dime's incredibly guitar and vinnie and rex's solid rythems. I pop it in the CD player when I've had a fuckin miserable day.

Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden

- I couldn't stand Matt barlow's voice on any other IE records. It just annoyed me. But when I heard Ripper was Taking over and they were doing a history album ( My favorite Subject ) I bought it the day it came out. Jon' s songwriting ability is definately showcased here, writing songs about history while having them flow and not make it feel like your having a history lesson at the sam time would be A difficult task. But it is pulled of Gloriously ( Pardon Pun ) and every song tells a story

Meagdeth - Rust in Peace

- Wow, my first album and I put this in whenever I just need a healthy dose of Metal. Without a doubt one of the best metal records ever. Swiped mine from a Wal Mart When I was like 13. And still remeber listening to it the first time. A sonic Blast of Amazing riffs Insane drumming and Dave's snarling Voice. Made me realise there are actuall talented musicians out there and that there not just all on MTV ( Like i said earlier I live in a town of 800 not that great of a selection ) THis album opened the gateway to metal for me.

Will post more later..... Fingers sore from typing

Carpathian Forest - Strange Old Brew
The masterpiece by one of the bands I most respect. A refreshing not so serious pose, good variety between the songs, incredibly bizarre ambient and perfect songwriting. A nice example of leather-jacket style Black Metal.

Dornenreich - Bitter Ist's Dem Tod Zu Dienen
One of the most original albums I know. An incredibly rich mix between Black Metal, Avant-Garde and Neo Folk. It's blissful, it puts you in a good mood and it's very well played? two thumbs up!

Hypocrisy - s/t
The most original, sophisticated and emotional Metal album ever? this album is just perfect, with a razorblade atmosphere, chilling screams, a fantastic progressive sound and a variation between the songs that go between an unleashed anger to sorrowful, beautiful ballads. My all times favourite

Mayhem - Live In Leipzig
A sinister black mass on stage, a ceremonial concert that just makes me fall in a deep trance when listening to it.

Deströyer 666 - "Unchain The Wolves"
Confess! Confess!!!
Fuck you!!! Fuuuuck youuuu!!!

Wyrd - "Vargtimmen II"
Melodic Black Metal can't go much better than what these Finns deliver here.

Hate Forest - "Battlefields"
This album makes you feel indeed like in a battlefield. Stunning as hell, with a slow, crushing rhythm and outstanding ultra-low vocals? try the experience of listening to it loud and with good speakers.

Clandestine Blaze - "Deliverers Of Faith"
Everything I expect from raw Black Metal. Cold, rusty rotten atmosphere and a nice garage sound, mixed with an awesome songwriting. Darkthrone would never be able to create something like this.

Hetroertzen - "A Crimson Terrible Vision"
Another bewitching Black Metal album, hypnotic, highly atmospheric and with an intelligent concept behind.

Drudkh - "Autumn Aurora"
The only CD on the list that I only discovered within the last 6 months, but I'm so amazed that I'm pretty sure that it will become one of my all-times favourites. It has some of the most original riffs of the genre, a great nature-praising concept and well, a very attractive atmosphere overall.

Slayer- Reign In Blood
THIS is what metal is all about, and nothing will ever, ever change the fact that this is the most solid metal release in history. Everything that has ever needed to be said about this album already has.

Death- Symbolic
This is Death at it's best and that says enough by itself. This is on hell of an album, every single song is perfect and amazing in its own right. This album has my favorite vocals by Chuck, they have a great tone ot them to go with the music but it wasn't TOO high like in The Sound. There is something to be said for every single song on this album, they each deserve their own review IMO. Empty Words, Perennial Quest, Zero Tolerance...a masterpiece. I can go on and on about Symbolic.

Iron Maiden- Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
The most underappreciated Iron Maiden album, and one of the most underappreciated metal albums in history IMO. Each song has such an amazing and almost epic feel to it that no other Maiden album has and that I have never heard matched. I'm a fan of very little melodic metal but this album does it for me. Not to mention the awesome story and how well it's told throughout all the songs.

Mayhem- De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
This is what Black Metal is about. Chilling riffs (the opening to Freezing Moon, anyone?), some of the creepiest and most unique vocals in metal, one of the best drummers in extreme metal, it all equals one hell of a BM album. Fuuuuuuuuneral....FOG!

Darkthrone- A Blaze In The Northern Sky
The first album of the BM posterboys and which 92% of BM bands would go on to try to sound like. It's no DMDS but this is pure BM and my favorite Darkthrone release. Their best riffs are all right here on this album, and each song grips you more and more as they go on.

Deicide- Legion
The most vicious piece of metal ever recorded. I have never heard anything that matches the way the Hoffman brothers did their thing on this album. Quick, ferocious, hard hitting guitar playing. Everything on this album is great, but the guitars in particular stand this album FAR out from other DM albums for me. REVOCATE THE AGITATOR!

Slayer- South Of Heaven/Seasons In The Abyss
These 2 are tied for me. Once again Slayer needs no words from me.

Yeah so there are my top 8, anything else would be too hard to choose for me. Those are more or less in order, the first 3 are anyways.

Death - Scream Bloody Gore
If it weren't for this album I might have never discovered TRUE death metal.

Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick
If there was ever such thing as a death metal masterpiece, this is it.

Metallica - Kill 'em All
The first real heavy metal album I have ever heard.

Bathory - s/t
Even though the production sounds like a basement demo, the songs on here are awesome. Hardcore punk mixed with NWOBHM. AWESOME!

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Old School. I think the real question is, why NOT have this album in your top 10.

Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
One of the heaviest thrash albums to have ever graced my ears.

Entombed - Left Hand Path
I love Swedish death metal and I love old school death metal.

Possessed - Seven Churches
This album makes me wish I was around in the 80's, so I could see this AWESOME band! In particular, the song Pentagram is IMO one of the best death metal songs ever written.

Autopsy - Mental Funeral
Chris Reifert is one of the few people I look up to and this album is one of the reasons why. Autopsy mix sludgy riffs with slow speed and make ugly, ugly death metal. (The other reason is Scream Bloody Gore)

Master - s/t
One of the biggest influences for my band is Master. We might be doing a cover of The Truth on our demo.

these are my current absolute favourites:

1. Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract
2. Rotting Christ - Triarchy of the Lost Lovers

I love these two albums the most. I have a hardtime with judging which one is better. I love them both. My absolute favourite albums. So melancholic, atmospheric and beautifully sinister.

3. Belphegor - Goatreich Fleshcult - a truly amazing extreme black/death metal album. Haven't heard any band with a really similar sound.

4. Septic Flesh - Esoptron - occult Death Metal album with the typical Greek atmosphere. Dreamy, melodic lead guitars all over the place.

5. Rotting Christ - Non Serviam - the third best of all RC releases. Probably their darkest album.

6. Destruction - Eternal Devastation - Deutsch Thrash at it's best some really fantastic songs on there (Curse the Gods, Eternal Ban, etc.)

7. Vader - Revelations - the best (and thrashiest) Vader album. Quite brutal at times, but always catchy as fuck.

8. Agatus - Dawn of Martyrdom - an amazing Greek Black Metal album with great celtic folk elements.

9. Bathory - Nordland - my favourite Bathory album, even though it's one of his late career. It has the best moments in Bathory's viking era.

10. Annihilator - Never, Neverland - fantastic thrash album with a lot of melody. Jeff Waters rules. He's got some amazing riffs here.

I have to agree. It is very underappreciated. When I hear people talk about Iron Maiden's great works, I hear "Number of the Beast" and "Powerslave" but never SSOASS. Good choice.

I'm still pondering my Top 10.....soon.

1. Cynic - Focus

If they hadn't released just one album then they would be the greatest death metal band today. So unique, so avant-guarde and so.... i really can't describe it.

2. Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black

Just so unique, no band could do what they did back then, this might be the second best concept in the history of metal. Full of pain, anger and dispair.

3. Carcass - Necroticism

Many people would say "Heartwork" because it's more melodic or "Symphonies Of Sickness" because it's more grind. That's the brilliance of Necroticism, it combines melody and sickness.

4. Bathory - Hammerheart

Among the creators of black metal and the best folk viking metal band. This album is just so full of heaviness and its concept is so amazing. And of course the great "One Rode To Asa Bay"..... masterpiece.

5. Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion

Celtic Frost also among the creators of black metal bands and one of the first avant-guard metal bands, they composed an album so agressive at the time. This album and this band has influenced the whole extreme metal scene.

6. Fields Of The Nephilim (The Nefilim) - Zoon

Slayer riffs and Ministry samples. The result: Maybe the best atmospheric death metal album. Just a masterpiece. I hope that he's going to find some session musicians and tour so i can see them live.

7. Ved Buens Ende - Written In Watters

Voivod influenced riffs, a bass guitarist who plays also in Arcturus and Ulver, one of the best black metal guitarists who also created a band called Dodheimsgard with a grim voice influenced from Attila (Mayhem) and a weird drummer with a unique melancholic voice. The best avant-guard black metal album.

8. Dodheimsgard - 666 International

Again these guys from Ved Buens Ende, Vicotnik and Eide, but with some other "weird" guys. Their names Appolyon and Aldrahn. This is a violent industrial jazz-inluenced techo black metal album. Recommended only to open minded.

9. Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale

An all star black metal band. Second album, second masterpiece. As avant-guarde as it can get. Ceremonial vocals from Garm (Ulver,Borknagar) and Vortex (Dimmu Borgir,Borknagar,Lamented Souls), weird riffs from crazy guitarists, again this amazing bass guitarist from Ved Buens Ende, the best drummer in black metal and a keyboardist who uses devices of terror insted of keys.

10. Thorns - Thorns

Snorre Ruch ,along Vicotnik the best black metal guitarist. Industrial black metal but with some amazing bandmates. Aldrahn (Dodheimsgard) handles the more "weird" vocals and Satyr (Satyricon) the usual black metal vocals and Hellhammer (Mayhem, Arcturus and hundrends more) is in charge of drumming, What more can you ask for?
