There are some albums that deserve a warning sticker, absolutely bad ones and those likely to throw your rage out. Leave the last statement to the pioneering belligerence of US doom metal thunder "Solitude Aeturnus." After signing a world wide deal with the mighty German Massacre Records, in December 1997 they recorded what was to become their masterpiece: "Adagio." Now they've released their 2006 "Alone" album to set the speakers on fire, pummel souls into doom submission and push pounding hell metal, leaving behind them the disastrous first mix of the two demos. "Alone" is about to push their profile to a whole new sound, though not a hell of lot has changed in fact; it's still ultra heavy, slow and with melody, but just much more focused and diverse than previous efforts.

I think it's safe to say that the last half or so of Scent of Death has the best clean vocal performance of recorded musical history. Oh, and Blessed be the Dead is probably the second.

Great album, even though I don't think this is the doomiest doom, which is its biggest advantage, because for me at least, this 70 minutes is really easy to listen to and the atmosphere is so absorbing, that I could listen to this album for ages.

Incredible, one of the best doom albums I've ever heard. Robert Lowe is my favourite vocalist in the genre.

Scent of Death is one of the best songs they've ever written.

8.9/10 for me - tracks 3, 6, 7, and 8 are a bit weaker than the rest IMO.

Robert Lowe is definitely one to the best singers in doom, and I loved the albums he did with Candlemass. I kind of prefer this even though King of the Grey Islands is probably my favourite Candlemass album... This really is an under appreciated masterpiece for sure.

This really is an under appreciated masterpiece for sure.

I have always preferred their earlier work (first three albums), but maybe I should revisit this one, seeing all the praise here.

Edit: Revisted and uprated to a 7. There is quite a bit to find here but it also feels a bit long at times. I still prefer their first three albums to this one, but not by much.

I will gladly heap praise on Into the Depths of Sorrow as well... It's a great record as well. It's really the middle few albums of theirs that maybe weren't quite at that level. They were still good albums, just not quite 'Alone' or 'Into the Depths of Sorrow'

As is Death Magic Doom for that matter.

I still think King Of The Grey Islands doesn't get enough respect when the best Candlemass albums are talked about. What a masterpiece
