We come of alcohol drinking age, we find alcohol, we get drunk and have a good time.

We get older, the effects of alcohol don't seem so strong so we drink more and more to try and get the same effect as before.

Before you know it, you only seem to have a good time when you are extremely drunk after drinking the best part of a bottle of vodka or something.

Sound familiar?

Well I'm not quite that bad yet, but last night I went out without being stupidly drunk and had a miserable time (although some other factors may have contributed to this...).

If anyone has been in this situation and found a way of having a good time without being really drunk, let me know.

Uhhh, it's all about the company, really. Some friends require severe inebriation, other friends require nothing but a good conversation to have a good time with.

Well, I don't drink and related stuff, but lots of my friends do, and I still have a good time when they invite me to reunions or whatever, it's funny as hell to see them act stupid while being drunk, and even better, you can tell them things that they wouldn't remember the next day. TBH I don't need to be drunk to have a good time, very few times I've been "drunk" or "happy", so, for me it is possible to have a good time without the need to drink alcohol, it's just the way you see it.

I like to drink but I certainly don't like, nor I usually get drunk, so I'm a living proof that there can be fun without being actually drunk (though, I'm not saying this 'fun' is not affected by some alcoholic beverages in quite little amounts..). It's surely up to the company you're with. Good friends or interesting people in general will make you feel good and you all will spend some quality time together.

Simple... don't drink any alcohoil at all and don't any drugs euither and just be amazed at how stupid people are when they have had alcohol or have done drugs.

Well when I was at age 14-16 something start live ''adult'' life we didnt smoke, drink, even it was start of booze, good times was swimming, playing football, ball games, etc we didnt need it, then it was more n more, after ewery day was wasted if you didnt drink, drink , drink and drink, go sleep at 4 stay awake 2-3 days whit crysrtal meth(I didnt use it ) , remeber me in MS years ago when I was drunk each day and talk about booze, so somehow you start think thet people who you call friends totaly change and are idiots and fucking traiders , and your money burns in booze, some how you simply understand and stop drink it , in beggining it was boring, but going in summer to Swe it was motivation to drink les n les, so after one year you find you can have a good time whit out it , go out to concert stay subber , or one two beers , and ''get'' life beck, and simply look to people and see there nobody who wants play football, go swimm whit you because bottle always are open and at age 24 Im not to old for football and swimming, so simplynowdays If I drink I realy can eat 5-10 KG meat in party, I dunno maybe something wromg whit me but I can eat a lot of meat and Im hungry always and simply I have a good time being sobber how drunk, if I will drink I will sleep and I hate be do it outside house, so its easy have good time whit out booze, you need time

I don't drink, nor do I ever wish to drink. I have seen other people drink, and I have observed every time that alcohol only leads to trouble. I'd love to smoke marijuana, but America has a zero tolerance drug policy, and if I am caught with even a small amount of marijuana, I could go to jail for a long time. Personally, I find this hypocritical. Statistics have shown that more people are killed each year by prescription and over the counter drugs than by illegal drugs. Alcohol and Tobacco kill far more than all illegal drugs combined, yet those substances remain legal. What's up with that?

Seeing as drugs are out of the question, and compounded by the fact that I don't have a car to go anywhere and the fact that I'm not very good at socializing, the only way I'm able to have a good time is through masturbation.

It is entirely possible to have wonderful time without any alcohol, drugs or inhaled fumes... it depends on the people... if you're with people you love and who love you then it's all you need and any health-ruining substance is excess there... well...you can always drink REASONABLY...so that you won't be drunk...

Best thing...tea nights in China...I miss those times...watching films and having tea or some liquor (not necessarily) with dear schoolmates, friends...it's priceless... going to a pub simply to get wasted or some dance party is a TORTURE...

I'm an example... I could drink whatever possible as a teen...nowadays even one big bottle of ale can make me feel nausea (not dizziness or drunkness but nausea)...it actually saddens me to have such a weak stomach...

I try to go to shows without drinkin sometimes..and it's a nightmare. I just want everyone to leave me alone and don't show my appreciation for anything. I am also in a band and it's hard to be motivated to giver without any booze.

Well, apart from the hangover part, yeh, I guess I was one of those, but the hangover was always present the next day no matter what. I hated throwing up and feeling like shit the next day. I stopped drinking for a while and then, the first time I had beer, it hit me, hehe. I had had 3 beers and I was already feeling drowzy.

I don't drink, and I don't do drugs. My friends and I get our kicks by doing other dangerous and illegal things; things that if we were to try intoxicated or high would have surely got us killed, maimed, or incarcerated by now.

You don't need alcohol, just crazy friends and a big imagination.

A good time without being drunk? Well, I'd say play a sport or go to the gym... even a good concert is fun when you're sober.

I mainly drink at work, so I can get through a 12 hour grave shift, sitting behind a computer working on spreadsheets. It's very hard to focus when you're tired and sober, so malt liquor energy drinks actually improve my work quality, plus I have more fun!

Well, i am a moderate drinker, as in, when i go to a metal show i drink very moderately(1-2 beers nothing more), and when i'm at a party with free booze i try to get moderately drunk

i won't deny alcohol does bring people together better, but i don't think that or some other type of drug is a prerequisite for good socialization.

Well I never drink at shows. I am usually driving back, and I want to remember the show for the review.
I kind of can't remember much of the first day of Hard Rock Hell III (the review was difficult...) because of (free) alcohol. Festivals are different though.

This is about casually going out to a club or whatever...

Dunno even here free booze I know my limit how can I drink it because I dontw anna be watred and sleep somwhere so I kow limit and never drink more how I shood , 4-5 beers or 200 grams of strong one and in gigs now a only coffe its cheeper and shows specely summer its for music how get drunk, and if I do I fast fall alseep and cant miss bus home and be stabed from stupid people

I facebook friend of mine did an article/note on faith and why it's bad or harmful. I could'nt agree more. One last note, positive social lubricant? Is that why so many are so touchy when they are drunk, high, even slightly so? I read it. He compares faith based religion to alcohol/drug abuse because both are used as a "crutch" to cope with reality; therefore the "crutch" causes anyone who does not participate in either of these activities to become a social outcast.

Yeah I agree it has to do with the company you're with at the time.

I also don't like to drink at shows for 2 reasons, it's too expensive and I want to be able to remember the songs that are played. Every now and then I may get tipsy but that's it (once I got wasted at a Megadeth show...still kicking myself because I don't remember any of the songs played, I just remember passing out at the bus stop when I went home and puking at the subway station!)

Just a couple of drinks in any occasion is fine though. You feel more relaxed and can let loose a bit without making an ass out of yourself.

Ideally, I like to save the drunkeness for actual parties and functions like that. The whole purpose of a party is to get wasted anyways, no matter what the occasion is (usually anyways).

He's overreacting. Massively.

His first reasoning, that it is silly to continue consuming something that tastes bad, is understandable, but also a little naive. Many things, including our precious music genre Heavy Metal, leave a (slightly) bad impression the first time. But always, there's something in it that lingers inside the mind of the consumer, and he/she has a feeling that she needs to delve into it a little deeper. Isn't it a known fact the often, the albums most difficult to get into are the most rewarding in the end. They're usually simply more complex than your average music album.

Secondly, he attacks the 'social lubricant' notion. But he does so by stating that 'so many' get violent, irritable and destructive when drunk or high. Yeah, some of us do, but hardly 'so many of us'. It's a dumb statement. Besides, I dare to say that at least 90% of the time anyone drinks he/she doesn't get 'drunk', perhaps not even tipsy. He greatly exaggerates the negative effects some (!) of us experience when drinking.

Apparently in his opinion, everyone that drinks or does drugs is depressed and needs a way to escape reality. While that may be true of the small group of alcoholics and meth, cocaine and heroin users, I dare to say they are less then 1% of the whole.

(Not sure why I took the time to respond to his rant in a different forum, but well, I did it anyway.)

@ Lucas- I agree with you there. I didn't read all that but from what you wrote, I can gather what was said. I drink only when around others, be it 1 other or 20 others. I've never been the type to drink alone because it's not enjoyable if there's nobody else to talk to. And yeah, everyone who drinks isn't violent either. Out of all the drunks I've seen, only a handful are actually violent drunks.

I guess he's basing this on his own observation so maybe that is all of what he has seen

The best think to do is not to get use to drink alot so you can get touchy spending very little money, you dont damage your health, and no hangover next day

Broken record here, but my ideal is spending time with my mates, whether or not we are drinking. I'm not a fan of being stupidly drunk, although I think that being slightly tipsy can make some social situations more enjoyable. Also costs less - I'm a poor student.

Well the good thing is, I didn't have a lot to drink last night and ended up having a great time. All you need is to find the company of a girl. Problem solved.

I have some friends who make a good time bad when they start to drink...they start acting like complete assholes...that's why I have no problem having a fun time without alcohol sometimes for a change...
