So, the reason I joined this forum is because the people seem to be tolerant towards more 'alternative' types and fusions of metal genre, even though the extreme metal is probably most popular kind on this forum. Even so, some of the genres (like the top three) usually take a lot of crap/dislike from one reason or another, it doesn't really matter. So, as tolerant and open minded as we all are, we all have some artists/genres we generally don't like, or truly hate.

So, what's your black sheep of the metal family? (and please no crap about 'not metal'). I can respect and tolerate almost anything, but I guess I dislike Black metal the most (and Pornogrind, if you can call it a genre), but there's really no purpose putting poll for it in this forum. Why do I dislike it? I hardly even gave it a try, but it sounds so soulless and empty to me. That's just my subjective opinion of course.

And yours?

Deathcore. The breakdowns are too frequent and nonsensical, the chugging of the guitars are so simple that even I could play them, and the pig squeals. Oh god, the pig squeals. Whenever I hear those pig squeals, I try to make it less shitty by imagining that the lead singer is getting sodomized by a deranged hillbilly from Deliverance.

I've got to say power metal in general, not just symphonic. As terrible as pop/glam/hair metal is, power metal seems to have taken all the worst of it and amplified it even more. There are occasional bright spots, of course, but over all it's the genre with the highest cringe factor by a very large margin. I seriously dislike Korn, but if my choice is Korn or Manowar (or Dragonforce, or Hammerfall, or...), I'll take Korn every time.

Personally, I never quite understood why some metal fans (by some I mean a lot) hate power metal. Sure, Manowar are lame example, but there are so many high quality bands of the genre, especially when fused with another style (Like Kiuas - Power/Folk/Death, Nevermore - Power/Trash), and Hammerfall are one of the first metal bands I got into, so I'll always respect them.

Korn? They're my favorite band

Nevertheless, I appreciate your input.

I dislike power metal in general because most of it is cheesy, flowery, effete, poppy and generally lame to my ears. I find it mostly embodies the opposite of the qualities I like in metal, which are the power, rage, and darkness found in death, thrash and (though to a lesser extent) heavy metal. In short, most power metal lacks balls.

Before all the lovers of power metal jump all over me, that doesn't mean I believe my opinion is right and yours is wrong. It just means that I hear the music differently than you do. It also doesn't mean I automatically dismiss a band because they are power metal. I really like Hibria, for example.

Got Mayhem?
Deathcore. It's an abomination in my eyes. Taking Death Metal and turning it into some faceless sludge breakdown fest with emo kids screaming and pig squeeling thinking they're brutal. I'm actually finding myself angry just writing this, so I'll stop. It's bad for my health ya know.

Can't choose just one!
Power Metal - sounds like the crap they play during the closing credits of some dumb ass 80's teen movie!
Hair Metal - soulless 80's "pop" music.
Deathcore - is The Faceless deathcore, if so, I don't like deathcore...

I will give my vote to hair metal, hate that the most!

I don't really despise a genre, but I do dislike some genres than other, so maybe the ones I dislike could be:

Thrash Metal: Not that I despise it a lot, indeed I like some bands, but to be honest, this genre doesn't interest me as much as others do. And yeah, I have listened key albums from the genre(Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, etc...), so don't start recommending me stuff.

Power Metal: Well, when I started listening to Metal, I used to love this genre a lot, but it started to bore me a lot, because bands started to sound the same and didn't found anymore interesting bands. There are some bands that I still like(such as Blind Guardian, Angra, Gamma Ray, X Japan, Sonata Arctica), but honestly, I don't feel that interested in this genre nowadays as I was back then.

-Core stuff: Don't like it and don't feel interested, as simple as that. Yeah, some interesting bands here and there, but in general I don't feel too interested.

Glam/Hair/Whatever: Don't need to explain this too much, I think.

I can't stand hair metal. While some of the other genres like deathcore or power metal may be annoying, no genre has betrayed the concept of metal as blatantly as hair metal.

I really despise power metal. I can't stand it, it's so bland, and waaaaaayyyyyy too chirpy for my liking. All bands seem to sound the same and i reall can't be bothered listening to it anymore.

And hair metal was one of the worst things that has ever happened to music. period.

I dislike those "core" genres... especially deathcore because of the breakdowns and the annoying pig squeals and what not. Its just bad and cant keep my attention.
Gothic Metal at times can get sort of annoying but i dont really despise it.
I used to be big into Power metal but its sort of starting to die away. Well i still like it but i really dislike all of those generic european power metal bands. I like power when its mixed in with something like folk or prog and i also like US Power (like Jag Panzer) since it tends to have more balls haha

Power Metal all the way, I can't picture myself sitting in my bedroom with some cheese pouring out of my speakers (with a few exceptions). Of course it lacks emotion, the only thing it does accomplish is make my ears beg for silence. It also lacks beauty, whether it's the spiteful kind (Black, Death, Thrash, Extreme doom) or the soothing kind (Gothic, depressive BM, Metalgaze).

The only -core genre that I truly detest is Deathcore, it's just walls of useless sounds with some squealing pigs that need to be sent to the slaughterhouse.

Hmm...about the deathcore; yeah I think it's pure shit. Though there are some good bands out there who mix it with metalcore and melodeath.

Power metal emotionless? While I ADMIT that it can be cheesy at times, you can hardly call it like that. There are really good power metal bands out there, and very good power fusions with other genres.

The genre I hate the most in Metal would have to be Nu-Metal.I think it is really generic and a bit too much on the mainstream side to be considered as Metal. However I know its sometime the first step in becoming a Metalhead,I think that once you discover all the other sub-genres out there it<s not long before you switch to another sound.

Power - specifically the abomination (euro flower) power has seemingly become. at least Agent Steel had some balls to it. 95% of the power i've checked out, from supposed giants in teh field, has about the same hooks as pop music, only cross-pollinated in a semi-metal (yet sterile) context. it's one foot in each, and thus lacking in both.

at least nu-metal had some rough edges to it's pre-packaged eMpTy-Vee friendly rebellion. a sheep in wolf's clothing.

the "power" i've checked out is just a field of sheep. and lacking in power.

Black metal for me. I don't really despise anything actually.. I just ignore it and don't listen to it. Simple as that. I know there are a lot of black fans here, but I just cant stand the rawness of underground black metal.
Some metalcore bands as well. Not all of course, I listen to some bands sometimes but others are really annoying. But again.. I just ignore them lol.

I can't believe symphonic power is in the poll and not grindcore... Ok, symphonic power can be horribly cheesy, but Nightwish is a legend. And grindcore? Total shit. I could "play" grindcore right now, by screaming in a microphone for 1:37 minute and then think of myself as a musician. Pathetic.

I totally agree. Apart from 'modern metal' (nu-metal, metalcore and the likes), Powermetal is the only genre I positively despise and find utterly lame nowadays. Like Derwood, I see it more as a different kind of pop music than a metal genre.

As for what some people call Hair Metal, there's no need to talk about it on a metal forum for the simple reason that it is not metal but hard rock (and of the lamest kind).

Among all the 'classic' metal genres (all those that already existed in the 80s), Powermetal is the only one I find lame and pop-ish.

Also, I especially dislike symphonic PM because too many bands give you the feeling they try to hide mediocre PM music under pretentious pseudo-orchestrations.

I understand what you mean by the abomination PM has become. Even if I don't fancy the old PM stuff anymore, I still don't have a problem with it. If PM would still be like it was in the 80s and mid-90s, I would not hate it as I do now. But the stuff post-2000 is just plain atrocious in general.
