First of all, assuming that all of the bands we are talking about are good at stage! Cuz if they arent this topic is meaningless :p

So, what do you like the most? Studio songs or Live songs? Well, I reckan the sound live is worst than studio although for me live songs are so much better! For example my fav song is from Iron Maiden - Fear Of The Dark, but its the LIVE version, cuz the other version doesnt tell me anything.

Anyone out there who can possibly disagree with me?

depends upon the band and how much "studio magic" they use to enhance their sound.

Slayer's dual live cd is what really got me into the band. I had heard "War Ensemble" and really liked it... ended up trading Nirvana's "Bleach" for Slayer's "Decade of Aggression" and haven't looked back since.

The opening track, "Hell Awaits", to me, blows away the one found on the studio album of the same name.

Ministry is another band that, as good as their studio releases sound, are an absolute juggernaut on stage.

Hmmm live, if talking about live songs and studio songs, I hawnt hear so much live songs so, but live CD and Studio, I like more studio and same time live, because live CD are better, atmosfere, talking, some extra solos but it depends, because vocalist can be tired, his voice bad and instrumenst dont sound so good, but studio all are perfect, sometimes too much

i haven't / don't except to see live band else on vedeios
but what i saw from Arch Enemy makes me love them alot alot more
it's better than there studio

a successful band shouldn't only do live as it is on the cd ... live performance should be better, that is, you are paying money to see something better than what you know or except

so Arch Enemy is successful band to me

don't know who else are like them, coz i only have very few vedios up to know..

BUT for a continious playing i prefer studio records, live is only to judge the real talent musicans, and to see it

Well for me it depends on the band. If the band is a really aggressive crazy live band or do crazy extended parts and jams I prefer the live stuff but if you're a shitty protools band like Trivium I'd rahter listen to the studio albums.

Edit: if you're talking about live songs as in seeing the band play live I'd probably pick that regardless.

Porcupine Tree is better live then in the studio, Opeth, a lil better, the rest is kinda the same. I don't really get the topic.

I really don't like Iron Maiden, but fear of the dark live rock in rio is very grate!

In my opinion bands like Children Of Bodom and Norther are great on studio records, but live they are even better! And their shows, it can't get better! they give you everything that you want!

It depends, but songs tend to be better live. There are some songs that are a better in the studio version, like In Flames's "Only for the Weak".

yes, like other have said it all depends on the song and on the band
some songs need the live atmosphere to bring them to life like 'Fear Of The Dark' and a few other Iron Maiden songs

some live recordings dont sound too perfect either such as Judas Priest's 'Meltdown' with Tim Owens doesnt have a very good recording at all and that is an official release
some bands might play some songs faster live though and give them more energy, (Judas Priest's 'Exciter')but generally i guess i prefer the studio recording providing it has a decent production

Well my all time fav Grave Digger song is The Curse of Jacques, but if you listen to the nem live album 25 live, it sounds really weak, very disappointing...

I think it depends on the song. For example Nightwish´s version of "The Phantom of the Opera" is better as a live version than it´s on the album. But then again, I like studio songs more. They just sound muche better. But there are some live albums that I like, for example Sonata Arctica´s "For the Sake of Revenge".

It depends completely on the quality of the mix. I hate when bands release tons of live albums (Pink Floyd being one). Some live albums sound great whereas some sound like crap.

There are lots of good live bands. For example Iced Earth made some excellent songs become perfect in their Alive in Athens. I love the live versions for Dead boys poem and Sacrament of wilderness by Nightwish's From wishes to eternity. @Bitter COld mentioned Ministry, they are amazing on stage.

But in most of the cases I prefer studio songs.

As everyone has already said, it really depends on the band. Perfect example is Iron Maiden. I personally love their live stuff particularly Live After Death. I think that it's their best album. It has a lot of energy and a great atmosphere. It's just the best resemblence of Iron Maiden's sound. On the other hand, there are bands that have average live performances. You don't hear the crowd, and they don't add in any drum solos or any additional things to give the album a nice edge.

I really do love live albums, but hearing exceptionally great live albums is rare and limited, so therefore I'll say that I prefer studio albums as they're better quality.

Ah well unlike most of the posters here I think a studio album is much better than a live, why? simple... a studio album is exactly how the band wants their music to sound, they spend hours, days, months locked up in that filthy tiny little room (in most cases, because some bands like luxury haha) going over their songs again and again until they get them -PERFECT-

Lives are always interesting, because you always wanna know how the band can manage without that impossibly large aid that is studio time, but as for the music, I honestly think the studio album is the way to go, simply because that is the way the band wants it to sound.

And I am not saying some live albums aren't better than the studio ones, because then that completely depends on the listener's taste, ahh but I wont repeat myself anymore go studio albums! haha

I think that the LIVE albums the band ganna have a awesome sound cuz they going to sell .....so if u are in a concert ok the band its good but u say damn i wanna the sound that they have in the LIVE album , and the studio album they make it like they like it and always when the are on gig they make a change in songs (some bands) so i like more heard a LIVE album cuz sounds better

Some Live albuns are pretty good, i my opinion a good live album is the one that you listen to the crowd singing with the band...just like 98 meltdown from Judas Priest...

Yeah it depends on the band as said so many times here already. That example you listed about Maiden's Fear Of The Dark is spot on; so much better live. However, I don't like live albums because to me most of the time the recorded version is better. However, when you see bands live yourself rather than listening to a live album, it's not rare for the band to sound better live and of course even then it depends on the venue and all.

I think I generally prefer studio albums, because on them you can enjoy all that 'clear' sound of instruments and perfect voice of the singer. It is produced well and the sound is (or should be!) in high quality.

But when you become a fan of the band, you suddenly want more - you want to feel the atmosphere of their concerts, to know how they communicate with audience etc. So for deeper exploring of the band live albums are better. The band can possibly also change something in the song when playing live, e.g. lyrics or something like that.

So, live albums are mostly for big fans, studio albums for all people, imo
(you usually buy studio recordings first, don't you?)
But rather than live CD's I prefer live DVD's, 'cause to watch band's performance is even more better than only listen to it

Depends on the band, for example, I really dislike Devil Drivers studios stuff, but then I saw them live opening for Opeth and it was insane, I'd never buy a Devil Driver studio album but if they release a live album I'd pick it up for sure.

If the live performance is good live recordings are better than studio ones but in most of cases that doesn't happend... anyway u have good live albums like Alive in Athens by Iced Earth or Folktergeist by Mägo de Oz which IMO are better done than in studio... or maybe are just different, as I said, I think performance says all

Overkill can make a kickass live album, I love Overkill but i find some of there studio stuff sort of dry, but the live album "wrecking everything" is probably my favorite live album ever recorded.

Studio recordings, most of the time live recordings have feedback, unneccesary noise, and in general its just harder to listen to. Which Im sure it sounded awesome at the venue, but then again if I wanted to hear them live I'd rather not spoil it and just wait or smth...but some live recodings are well done, it really depends.

i think it depends on the band we are talking about. there are bands that sounds exasctly the same liva and studio (ex. CoB), and there are bands that sounds lots better live, like sonata arctica, cuz, to be honest, their studio albums can be boring, but you can get nuts with their live versions( just pay attention to the solos, they are better live!!!)
