But no really, I did this once before on the Kamelot forums. We all just pitch in and write a song.

As many people who want to write the music, record, write lyrics, etc etc feel free to post imput. All criticism and ideas welcome. Also if you're a new to your instrument this is going to be a great way to learn some basic song writing tips/tricks. So feel free to ask questions about the process. As for software, I have GP5 still, but I believe the gp6 will open those files. Anyone who can't do this though can post simply riffs and ideas in text, I'll certainly take the time to read them.

The very first thing we'll have to do is decide what genre, or genres we want to attempt. This may however be decided by the singers/musicians we have. No power metal vocalist = no power metal. lol

So any ideas? I'll check back soon, if not I'll just start up a riff.

BTW 4 minute songs, or 10 minute epic, whichever I'm good with it. lol

Ok so I'm playing that riff a little on the slow side and it sound to me a like a bridge riff, something to be played when a fast riff when double bass end, then another intense section maybe.
BTW I use 7 strings, so any tuning is good.

When I play it, it's a faster, sort of tech-death thing, similar to athiest or something similar. Although playing it slower might work.

No I actually thought of that, like the intro to piece of time. That's how I'm playing it now, now it can intro, bridge or interlude, so we'll keep that riff cause at faster speed it's definitly useable.

Might not be a bad harmony riff either.

Well I have it standard tuning so you can play it as the lowest note is E there. However what timing were you using on your riff?

They'r all eighth notes I think. The time signature (not entirely sure about this) I think is 7/8 for the first part of the riff, then 4/4 for the last phrase.

How about write a 10 minute breakdown? I can't imagine a worse song. It would also need cowbell.

My riff is also 7/8 timing, so this is working well, however I think we should use my riff to lead to a solo, or as an intense riff after a solo or chorus.

So you're riff as the intro riff, mine is riff 1 played twice then this solo. The first riff I put in the thread will probably be used much later in the song. Riff 1 will be where the 2nd guitar enters playing the riff in A#. Currently both the intro riff and this riff are played twice, but we can debate upping it.

We're writing a song together, post any riff you'd like us to use, right now it's shaping up to be in the thrash/death style. Write us some new riffs, or post anything you have and eventually this will get recorded.

Update on voids riff, I removed the last note and played it after Riff 2, so it's intro, riff 1, solo, then we need a verse, chorus, and then riff2 and Void's riff, which is riff 3. Void's riff sounds quite good after this one.

HAHA, I only removed the last note to fit in 7/8th timing to keep the flow going after my riff.

2nd riff there we can use.......actually tinkering with that riff a little and vary it over several bars, maybe change the chords each time? That way we can play it many times, that might make a good chorus riff.

Go ahead and do what you want with them, I've never actually written a song before, so this may be a good learning experience for me.

Alright no problem, I'll work them out later tonight.

Update, I'm currently morphing Void's 3rd riff into the chorus riff.

Right now it's in B, but I will convert it all to C eventually. I might tune my Jackson Warrior to C.
