A few months ago, I tried to listen to this album but it sounded really awful, especially the vocals. After that, I experimented with a little death metal and I found no escape from listening to this classic. I was more patient this time, and I gave it another try. This time I could easily classify this among my top 5 albums of all time. Read the following to see what really makes the piece of death metal legendary.

Instant classic. The sickest album of all time. The vocals, the guitars, the slow drums. A monument in death doom.

China was a neat
I watch begotten i get sleepy in the middle and yawned. I heard this, worms creeped out of my earlobe and reverberations of the churchbell nearly lobotomized my mind.

This album sounds completely disgusting, but in the perfectly right way. One of Death/doom's instant classics.

More of a classic than Severed Survival in my opinion.

Wrong, there is definitely doom influences that evolved from straight-forward death metal on the debut.

Shame this is a boring-ass album, and they went on to release an even worse album. They were onto something here.

It's always good to relisten the classics after some time. This is Autopsy's best.

It's been over 30 years since this masterpiece came out and still very few albums barely come close to this level of filthy death metal. The amount of swampy dirt on this record is so overwhelming there must have been way more thought put into it than meets the eye, like the song structures which lack anything even remotely commercial, "nice" and pop-oriented, all the instruments out of tune and the exceptionally raw production just grabs a hold of your spine and won't let go until the thing is over. Not all of the songs are masterpieces, but the overall experience is.

While I personally like the debut more because it has more straightforward badass riffs and DiGiorgio's bass is very nicely audible, this one is also great. Like Metal Rambo said, this is truly the epitome of swampy, filthy, death metal with a sinister doom vibe.

I find my view of these two albums is similar to my experience with Slayer's first two albums. The first one is fun and lets the riffs take center-stage, while the second one has longer, more atmospheric doomy songs.

My favorite songs here are "Destined To Fester" and "In The Grip Of Winter", which luckily are featured as bonus tracks on my copy of Severed Survival
