Have we sunk this low? Just kidding, this is a great genre if you ignore the stuff on pop radio. Jonny Cash was a rebel and Willy Nelson is a stoner. So does anyone else here like country? Who are your favorites?

I'll start with one of my favs Old Crow Medicine. They just sound like a bunch of drunken hicks. It's great. Check it out:

Huge Johnny Cash fan, but I wouldn't call him country.

@BoxCar Willy: Come on, Johnny Cash is as country as you can get. That being said, he was awesome. My favorite song is probably It Ain't Me, Babe.

As for other artists, I also enjoy Jerry Reed, Kris Kristofferson, the everybodyfields (a more modern take on that genre), Trampled by Turtles, etc.

I love country. As a Finn, I guess it has some exotic quality to it. I love my music dark and gloomy, and few do it better than country.

Of the old greats, I'm a Townes Van Zandt fan. Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson are great too, as well as the other Highwaymen. And Merle Haggard.





But there are plenty of young bands with their own twist on country. It's a long list, but The Handsome Family and David Eugene Edwards (Sixteen Horsepower, Woven Hand) probably stand above the rest. THF's Through The Threes is probably my most listened country album of all time.





If these songs don't convert you into a country fan, I don't know what will.

Well, I mentioned him and even posted a video in the context of the Highwaymen! But to be honest, he's my least favorite of the four.

Great tune (even if it's stuff on the pop radio). But I kinda hate the driving Jesus song.

Not an awful song, but this is precisely what gives country a bad name: it's just generic pop, and the only thing that makes is "country" is that the chick is wearing jeans and a vest. When people say they hate country, they probably mean stuff like this played on the radio.

Ahhhh yes, Alternative, Traditional and Outlaw Country for the win. Pop Country is so fake sounding and horrible, Nashville is the Hollywood of the South.

Also, to me, listening to some top quality Bluegrass gives me a similar sensation as listening to some Folk Metal (I have a thing for strange instruments).
