Unlike certain other shock rockers, Rob Zombie always acknowledged his debt to Alice Cooper. The Coop has been around for many decades now so it is a good thing to learn a lesson or two from him. Rob Zombie did his homework and with his latest release, Educated Horses, he went into a direction very similar to Cooper's excellent Dirty Diamonds and he did this with very good results.
Educated Horses is a much more direct, concise and stripped-down release than what we are used to from Zombie. Previous albums often had a tendency to sound like some sort of Luna park thrill-ride but this is not the case here. A lot of the theatrics is toned down in favor of a new, realistic kind of creepiness and a garage rock aesthetic. Most of the songs are based on very simple rock structures and emphasize riffs and vocals above all else. Obviously, Rob provides us with his trademark "yeah" and "baby" infested brand of demented lyrics so if you are a fan of this particular style of campy abstraction, you're in for a treat. As such songs like "Let It All Bleed Out", "Death Of It All" and "American Witch" clearly prove, this direction is a very successful one for Rob Zombie. There is an air of humbleness here, which is so obviously missing from the releases of so many of his contemporaries. Perhaps fans of campy shock rock don't actually want to hear bloated concept albums? Rob thinks so and based on this album, I tend to agree.
While obviously not album of the year material, Zombie's Educated Horses is nonetheless a very fun listen, great for parties or for listening to in the car.
