Sean Reinert - Drummer Dead At 48

Former Cynic and Death drummer Sean Reinert has died. He was the founding member of Cynic along with guitarist/vocalist Paul Masvidal and he played on all their records, including the legendary Focus. He was also the drummer on the classic Death album, Human. No cause of death has yet been revealed and an autopsy is going to be performed. He was only 48 years old.

Many musicians have reacted to this news on social media, including Kelly Shaefer, Travis Ryan, John Longstreth, Richard Christy and Michael Amott. A post on Reinert's Facebook page, written by his husband Tom, has confirmed the sad news.

Our deepest condolences go to his loved ones. Rest in peace Sean.

Statement posted on Facebook:

"I'm broken. As many of you now know, my husband Sean passed away last night. Some of you in the inner circle I was able to reach via phone last night and this morning to try to let you know what happened before it spread across social media. For those I couldn't reach to tell you myself I'm sorry.

"I'm still trying to put together the events of the last 24 hours. After coming home from work last night I found Sean unresponsive on the floor, I administered CPR with the assistance of the 911 operator and he was taken to a local hospital via ambulance. There is no cause of death and an autopsy will be performed. Sean and I just completed our yearly physicals about 3 weeks ago and we were both in good health. Sean did not have any sort of drug abuse issues and I'm still in a state of disbelief. I can't begin to comprehend how my life and the lives of Seans close friends and family have just been shattered.

"That's about all I'd like to share at this point. It feels strange to even have to make this post over such a private matter but I understand Sean was a public figure and beloved by many around the world. For myself, Seans family and close friends I ask that you please give us time to grieve. The fans he adored so much lost an influence and phenomenal drummer. Some of us lost our Husband, Son, Brother, Uncle and Best Friend.

"Thank You,
-Tom & Patti (Seans husband and Seans sister)"

I first found out about it on Michael Amott's Instagram. It felt like a bad joke. Yet another fantastic drummer taken away too soon.

R.I.P. Sean. You will be missed.

Of all the deaths in the past years this hit the hardest for me, only second to Chris Cornell's. Damn. R.I.P.

Hopefully his husband has a good support network. It seems like he has a good enough relationship with Sean's sister to be able to post about it together, so that's something. Nobody's ever really prepared to lose a spouse like this, especially at such a young age.

I would be absolutely devastated if I came home and saw my partner dead. It's hard to even think about it. RIP Sean. I hope his husband find peace.

He came out about 5 years ago if I'm not mistaken. Him and Masvidal both came out at the same time.

Been listening to Focus, Traced In Air, and Human all day, especially the instrumental versions of the songs where you can hear Sean's playing the clearest.

I didn't start listening to Cynic until I saw them open for Meshuggah in 2008 and was absolutely blown away by Sean's playing. Best surprise discovery of any concert I have been to.

In 2011 I went to see Sean off stage on a concert I didn't prepare for, staying around a mate in London days after Cathedral's (supposed) farewell show in between fighting to attempt getting a damn Leonardo exhibit ticket using the Cynic show as my deadline. Since I was used to going to shows strictly knowing everyone playing he was the true first exception even without knowing his credentials.

Meeting Sean after little did I realise how the encounter was a revelation. As a fan usually prepping for gods to many talking to them in a new light were purely humans at heart at not fan level interest, based only at an appreciation of rarity live made for talking professionally and creatively making a curious social risk. A new chapter in my social, decision making and especially musical artistic development. He signed my Carbon Based Anatomy EP along with the others that I was recently (frighteningly) about to sell my Cynic collection a week ago due to usual now disconnected interest however said EP has boss Venosa art. I will now cherish that spontaneous moment I did try them out while I could and it's so far one of the most important flight decisions made in understanding risk as a practical concept.

RIP Sean and Cynic. Now I see your music in a breath of understandable light, I don't connect to it as much these days but that is the point. In those breaks you made some incredible (now understandably influential to all the prog, melo, drone and life) soundscape passages.
