Devin Townsend the Canadian metal genius probably best known for his heavier band Strapping Young Lad also has a great progressive band known as the Devin Townsend Band. Devin Townsend started off his musical career singing on the Steve Vai record Sex and Religion then his band Strapping Young Lad got signed. Devin Townsend is a "melodic" alternative to Strapping Young Lad what are your opinions about him I believe he is great.

Indeed, not much to say, but I really enjoy the music. I am going CD shopping as soon as I cash my check, I'll see if I can find some of his solo CDs. Profound work.

The Devin Townsend band is great! I discovered this guy on Ayreon's Human Equation: his vocals were simply awesome ! Then I found out his bands. I prefer the DevinTownsend band, more melodic than Strapping young lad IMO (even if the later is good too).

Synchestra is such a perfect album. It is an adventure that has to be experienced from start to end. I just love the
insanity/super sanity that is so apparent in the transitions from early-morning barnyard peacefulness to a complete sensory assault that my speakers can't even handle. Songs about the collective unconscious, babies, vampires, mother earth, and even a good ole uplifing country-style song about sunshine and happiness. Haha I love it.

I bought 'Accelerated Evolution' a few days ago and it has really captured my interest as of late. I can't seem to rip myself from it, even with my other four purchases of the week before. There's something about it that I really love. Perhaps the compositions? The vocals? The themes? I am not sure, but I think it's a combination of everything really. I will definitely have to check out 'Synchestra' more.

I found and bought 'Synchestra' at Best Buy yesterday. I am listening to it through again right now. It's really good. A little less straightforward than 'Accelerated Evolution' and with a few wacky parts like country and polka, but it is definitely in the same vein. I am really enjoying it right now. Anyone else have it or heard it?

I was wondering, has anyone heard his 'EKO' project or anything from his 'Devlab' album? I read they are similar. I was at Music Warehouse today and saw the special edition of 'Accelerated Evolution' with the 'EKO' project on it. I was wondering, anyone heard this?

I haven't heard anything from EKO but I have heard Devlab. Devlab isn't like the Devin Townsend Band because it's an ambient album so if you like ambient music you should check it out because it's a fairly good ambient album. Also I don't think the EKO project is a seperate band but just a set of songs from the Devin Townsend Band but I could be wrong.

Yes, I know all of this. The 'EKO' project was some experimental stuff for the album and I had read that 'Devlab' was like it and just wanted to know what anyone thought about it.

I really like The Devin Townsend Band/Devin Townsend as well. I prefer his older stuff, and I've heard all albums except the new one. Also, I do prefer Strapping Young Lad, as I prefer his more aggressive work. All Devin Townsend stuff is good though. He is an excellent musician, etc and he's got some great albums under his belt.

I think he's taking a break at the moment, because he's been doing albums every six months for years now, which is true when you think about it.

Well, I have two of Devin's albums...Terria and Accelerated Evolution...both are amazing and very creative...nice spacy slightly progressive albums...I saw them once when they toured with Symphony X and Quo Vadis (one of these things is not like the other)....

When I first time saw him (at he stage with Vai from some video's stuff) I thought what the hell, this man will be freakin' monster of rock. He's insane, have a lot to say, and got talent as well, and really good sense of humour.

btw. watch his new video - it rocks

He is halarious and he is my idol.. The man is a musical genious - listen to Alien by SYL, he mixes super heavy guitar with a xylaphone and then follows that by an explosion.

Is it Quo Vadis because they are Death Metal? Or is it Symphony X because they are not Canadian?

Here is a great quote from the man himself.

"I'm a ping-pong, I can go until I'm bored with one emotion and then I do the other. I need that time of light when I can put the dark in and vice-versa, so the Devin Townsend Band is the antithesis to Strapping Young Lad. I couldn't have written Synchestra if I hadn't done Alien. Now that I've written Synchestra, I can write other things."-Devin Townsend, November '05

Devin Townsend in all his forms are said to be great. Though I have just tasted SYL's first album. He did have something going on for a while named Ocean Machine, this, if my memory is right was back in 1998/99??

Looking at Strapping Young Lad, lyric is very humorous and simple, but with those stuff he combined, he created very good melody of agressive but precious. I have listened to Devin Townsend, 2 songs Life and Canada, he writes lyrics very nicely. And Im just into Life immediately. He is so talented with vocal, programming, guitar, etc
