Today Kalmah posted some news about the upcoming album, I have to say that it sounds really intressting with more depression and agression in their music. Well here it is:

"Kalmah has finished the recordings of 6th album which will be released in the early 2010. The actual release date has not been set. The recording process started in May, continued in June and finally ended in August. All recordings and mixing was done at Tico-Tico studios. Mastering was done at Cutting Room. The album is still untitled. The work title was '12 Gauge' which is a title for one song for the album. All in all we did 9 new songs and one cover.

Recordings as usual for Kalmah went pretty smoothly. We had everything pretty much ready before the studio and it was easy to just concentrate on the sound and perfection of the performance. The sound, well, of course the sound is great. We managed to dig out more depression and agression overall.

From now own we are concentrating on the cover art, booklet and stuff. We have some upcoming shows at Russia in the beginning of November and we are planning for Finnish shows at the beginning of 2010."

Not overly excited or hopeful about the new album....the last 2 albums had about 3 good songs between them: "Groan of the Wind", "For the Revolution" and "Like a Slave"...the rest were severely sub-par and run of the mill kinda stuff. We'll just have to wait and see...hopefully they will write decent solos for a change, I miss them.

If you would like to get a little preview of the new album's sound, check out their studio diary on the Kalmah website. I think one of the videos has a solo or two being worked on in it.

Am new to this forum, but have been a long time fan of Kalmah's music.
Kalmah's such an epic band and definitely changed me in a way. How so? "Hades" and "Heroes to Us" were the songs that got me into metal. And hook to Melodic Death Metal (that's how i generalise them, others may have a different opinion to it).

I can't wait to hear their next album release.

Go there if you want to see some low quality footage of one of their new songs being played live. From some of the stuff I can make out from the video it sounds a lot better than the songs from the last album.

I know that a live video isn't the best way to listen a song for the first time, having said that, i must say that the new song "Bullets Are Blind" didn't impress me.

After listening the studio version, now i can say without a doubt that im not impressed, is not a bad song but in any way i find it memorable. Still im waiting for the album, who knows maybe this is a filler song.

The new song seems decent to me, not enough to make me start drooling, but enough to check out the full album in the future. I'm not biased toward their old stuff, so maybe I actually prefer their newer sound, particularly since I enjoyed "For The Revolution" a lot . The album title is a bit disappointing, however.

"Bullets are Blind" sounds all over the place... maybe it's the sound quality, but I don't know. It's kind of messy.

Got hold of it today and Im pretty impressed. Much closer to the "swampy" Kalmah of old theres some really good songs on there, the first song is forgettable though. I love the title track as well as "Better Not To Tell", "Godeye" and "Sacramentum" so all in all the latter part of the album has stronger songs on there.

Problem is Im pretty much over this type of sound...even though at the time I thought "Swampsong" and "Swamplord" were amazing, I moved on from them a long time ago so its difficult for me to make an objective decision about the new one since I have to imagine what I would have thought if I heard THIS album 8 years ago.

But at the moment Id give it an 8/10 even though I dont enjoy music with predictable song strutures that much anymore.

Me neither....its good to have some bands that are changing things up and some that stick to their guns.....id listen to kalmah until the end of time if they never changed a thing...im really starting to get annoyed at how often i hear people complain that a band has already put out an album with this sound....and others say i wish that band would have never changed...its like you cant please anybody

Yeah, that's why I love bands like Iron Maiden. They do what they do on every album and do it well.

Dude i think you have a serious problem, you dont like metal anymore, i havent read a single comment of you praising a new album, all the time something is wrong, and i not only meant Kalmah, also with Ensiferum, Finntroll, Sonata Arctica and so on, always their first previous albums were better.

Returning to the topic, I really like this album, i consider it even better than They Will Return.

I cant stop listening to 12 gauge, to me is a 10/10 album, not as good as Swampsong. And i was thinking that one of the best things about this album is its keyboard + guitar solos, something that almost all melodeath bands have lost.

Maybe im overraiting it, but to me this is an epic album.

Well why should I give things praise when I dont think theyre good enough? Thats a really silly comment....The problem I have is that people arent critical enough. And what is it to you if I have nothing good to say about anything new? Isnt that my opinion? Im pretty sure I have a right to my opinion and if you read what I said I actually like the new Kalmah a lot more than their last 2 albums. So wheres the problem?

At least I know what I like and listen to music in a critical manner - you will also notice that when you look at my album votes that unlike most people on this site I dont just give EVERYTHING 9/10. I know what I like and the progression I like to hear in bands and the fact that they dont become stagnant....I feel its more of a crime to just think everything is good because when you do then it means nothing stands out anymore. By being critical your learn what you like and why...feel free to disagree.

Another thing, if you want to nit-pick through all my latest "negative" comments on new albums, why dont you say anything about the positives ones i made recently? Like While Heaven Wept, Falconer, Suspyre, Arsis, Be'lakor, Dark Trnaquillity, Ihsahn, Destinity etc. ? Why are you so selective when choosing what I am apparently all about or how much I "dont like metal"?

So yeah, maybe I am harsh on metal, but thats the way I am and im not easily impressed. Lastly I always give valid reasons and explanations for my reasons for liking/not liking things and I feel on a forum thats valid enough reason to not be ridiculed for my thoughts. If its so annoying to you that I dont jump for joy at every new album that comes out then boo-hoo. Or in the future you could actually do some research before you come up with preposterous allagations and take it to heart that I actually do like metal very much perhaps just not the bands / albums that you like.

Just heard the album and I have to say, it is much better than their previous two efforts, I consider this a return to form for them. I'm glad to see this since they hold a special spot in the metal world for me, as they were one of the first bands I got into when I started listening to metal.
