People paying large amounts of money to see a band they have no musical interest purely for the sake of seeing a bit of cleavage? I don't think so somehow. A rare exception at most. Sex sells but no one is going to go that length. It'll draw them into checking out music but a pair of tits alone is hardly going to make them staunch fans.

Exactly... I mean. There are strip clubs... or porn. The last one is even free most of the time. There are some all-female bands that try to use that as a marketing point (Arven anyone?) and I don't see them having such a fanbase like Epica because the music in the end counts for the fans of the style. I think it's safe to give some credit to the fans.

Well I never go to gig because singe is sexy wellin that case why guys dont go to pop concert and other craps, more half nacked schicks whit big boobs , almost no bra and so on .... well music is main reason to go to the gig not a chick whatever, if I go I never even pay attention to girls in crowd.

Fail to see how it could be attention-whore-ish. Obviously I'm not naive enough to think that there aren't some dudes just looking at her but I see it as a rarity and not a big issue overall. You probably miss the fact that some girls actually LIKE to put those clothes on and they sure as hell aren't attention-whores just for that.

There's no special "mindset", "obligation" or anything. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar... and in this case, we just happen to talk about a really cute cigar.

I'm just saying there is a difference between going out on the street dressed up sassy and going out in front of a bunch of metalheads dressed up sassy when all the lights are on you. In order to have the confidence to do such a thing, you must be a person who enjoys tremendous amounts of attention. Attention whore is a mean expression, and obviously it's a trait just like any other. I'm just saying it's bad for a person to rely on attention other people gives them.

And I didn't claim that people go to Epica gigs just to stare at Simone, but when they are there, they certainly aren't going to look at Mark Jansen. Ahhhh Rod read I said it's a mean expression and that it's a trait just like any other. I also didn't say a thing about how Epica fans only like Epica because of Simone's beauty, that was RavenKing (and even he said something just along the lines of that). I did once question would Epica have as many fans if they didn't have a beautiful woman fronting them (though not in this thread), but that's simply because of the fact having a very beautiful woman fronting the band is curious and it's bound to throw attention your way.

I find their music pretty boring but I think they're talented musicians (though a bit too preachy for my taste). I also didn't say that an occasional queen-of-the-night outfit is wrong, I was just wondering how is it possible that she doesn't find wearing clothes that show pretty much everything on stage in front of 1000+ males difficult. I also said that it probably points to the fact she simply enjoys attention. Which is bad because one can only be in the spotlight for some time. But it's her choice.

Even if you were right about the attention thing I still don't see the "bad" part. In the end, it will still come down to music. When that day comes and if they are still around, she would just were other outfits that match her age/body/whatever and that's it.

Simone's not just hot but also charismatic and I think she'd be that even if she wore a t-shirt and jeans and read a telephone book on stage. I'd still want to see her. The fact that she's also wearing clothes that underline her beauty doesn't mean she's an attention whore (in my opinion) but that she's a confident stage performer who's good at what she does, that she's beautiful and is aware of it. Why should she wear some baggy dress buttoned up to her throat?
I gladly let girls at school/on the beach/at work see that I'm a bloke in better-than-average physical shape. It's not that I'm sending all the women a message that they should come and jump to bed with me (to some chicks I do, I admit it... sometimes...) Should I wear an XXXL size dorky sweater and Potter glasses and always button up my shirt to my throat? I really appreciate aesthetic beauty. It doesn't mean I expect women to be scantily dressed. But a sexy dress that doesn't necessarily reveal anything but lets me guess what's beneath it, is something that makes me praise the Lord for the beautiful art that He's created...
I think Simone does just the right thing. After all, she's not Rihanna or some other pimped pop star... (just wearing underpants on stage and imitating a porn scene is cheap). Simone is a classy babe.

I don't know about Epica but if I liked the band's music, I'd enjoy their performances also if they're singer looked like Susan. You know, I think she's an amazing singer. I also like Adele. She's chubby and not exactly what one would consider a typical beauty but her voice is wonderful.

I'm a feminist and I think women should have the right to wear whatever the hell they want, but that doesn't mean it's wrong to wonder sometimes why any given person A should wear outfit B in occasion X. Yes, her leather outfits are very beautiful, but you can be equally as beautiful in anything else. Guess that you'd have to be a woman to understand that it's a pretty weird feeling when you go out in a shirt that shows a bit of your cleavage and see ten men are staring at your tits. Now make the outfit ten times more revealing and multiply the number of men by 100 and you'll see what I meant

It's a pure psychology thing - what makes one person comfortable doing something that others can't do. I think about those things a lot, yes, but I don't think it's a bad thing, it's a nice pastime, and I always try to get into everyone's proverbial shoes.

Well, you are only one person, and I'm also very well aware of how superficial most people are. And male metal fans are no less superficial than anyone else. Why is it that only good looking (or at least, not women most would class as the total opposite) women are in well known metal bands? This could just be coincidental, but I highly doubt it.

I don't think it's so much an issue of the attractiveness of the female band member in question but how much of a focal point that the bands make of her femininity/beauty etc. Some female band members are just playing their music, and not fussing to much on drawing attention to their good looks.

So in general I agree with Angelic, it seems to be the hugely popular bands which feature beautiful women. Though I have no doubt that there are women out their who are both good looking and part of bands which are not exactly widely popular.

One of my favourite female metal vocalists is Julie Christmas, I find her quite attractive:

You just made me remember Melissa Ferlaak who is actually hotter than Simone plus she sounds better. She was the singer of Aesma Daeva, a good but unfortunately not very well known band. Later she fronted Visions Of Atlantis... now she's in Echoterra... She was awesome in Aesma Daeva and just like Lori Lewis she could truly shine in Therion. In fact, when Tarja left Nightwish, my first thought was that Melissa would be the only operatic vocalist out there to replace Tarja. Not only does she sing better but her looks and stage presence are spellbinding. Sadly enough, Visions Of Atlantis was clearly too small and modest for her and looks like Echoterra is not much of a headliner either. This woman is an undiscovered pearl.

Anyway... looks like two birds got hit by one stone...

I will be honest here and say exactly what I have in mind.
My favorite woman in the metal world is Jo Bench. Why, you may ask? Because, while not ugly at all, she never tries to draw attention by looks or the fact that she is a woman. Instead, she concentrates on her bass playing. And she's damn good at it.

But I think I'm not representative of the male audience. Anyway, when I think of metal, I think of the music itself, not the people involved. And I don't care if a female singer is hot. Fact is I don't like women vocalists in metal and think they fit only popmetal bands I don't like at all.
If you're looking for hot women, there are lots of places (and much better places) to look than in metal. That's surely not what I'm looking for when it comes to metal.

I do, but seeing as I rarely watch TV, and don't listen to mainstream radio, I have no idea what's going on in the world of mainstream music. I had no idea who Justin Beiber was until someone on this site posted a video of him, and told me who he was. I had seen his name mentioned on countless youtube videos, but had no idea who he was. Seeing Adele, there doesn't seem anything wrong with her, she looks fine to me.

I wasn't just talking about bands with female vocalists. R'vannith made a point which actually strengthens the point I was making. Even the not so well known bands with female members don't feature any women that most would deem as "ugly".
