Let's see... I'm going to have to go with
Call of Ktulu
Fade to Black
Fight Fire With Fire
Master of Puppets
Battery
The Four Horsemen
and for some reason I've always liked The Unforgiven 1 and 2, though the albums they come on are quite boring.

All of songs above are my favorite besides the four horsemen i dont dig much. I love all 3 version of unforgiven... Imo metallica has very good lyrics though their musical outstand their lyrics making it less attention centred.

I really like The Thing That Should Not Be, its so heavy and also The Frayed Ends of Sanity. Those are probably my current favorites.

Maybe Trapped Under Ice, or Shortest Straw. Haven't listened to them in forever though.

Orion, so incredibly epic and soulful at the same time. The ideal instrumental.

It's hard for me to choose, I really love Hero of the Day from Load (the S&M version even more), but if I had to choose an 80s song, it would probably be Fade to Black or For Whom The Bell Tolls, there's just a mystical ambiance enveloping these powerful tracks. James has quite a foreboding tone with his vocals that is chilling to hear. I also love Wherever I May Roam, that sitar intro and the main riff really hit the spot! \m/

Ordinary men hate solitude. But the Master makes use of it, embracing his aloneness, realizing he is one with the whole universe (Lao Tzu).

My favorites personally are Spit Out the Bone, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home and The Unforgiven, but to be honest it's pretty hard to choose.

My favourites are One and Enter Sandman (It's actually great but haters gonna hate) aswell as Master Of Puppets and The Unforgiven (same here with the haters). Those are my favourites but since I'm a huge Metallica fan I love a lot more of their songs.

The title track of Ride The Lightning is Metallica at their best for me.

Motorbreath and Four Horsemen for me. I can't pick one, so here's 2.
also Blackened, Master of Puppets and wherever I May Roam are all tied for second.

It's hard to choose cause there's so many great ones. Off the top of my head I'll go with Blackened and Sanitarium as my two favourite, but there's many more I could easily have chosen.

Not only is 'One' Metallica's premiere song, it is a very serious contender metal's premiere song.

One.
If i had to build a Metallica best of would be something like this:
Battery
Master of Puppets
For Whom the Bell Tolls
One
Blackened
...And Justice for All
Disposable Heroes
Fade to Black
Orion
Dyers Eve

To me the most flawless would be 'Damage Inc.'. The last song involving the great Cliff Burton(RIP). That intro alone was so influential in metal. I think he would have turned into an absolute monster of a composer had he lived.
Heh - i notice nobody gives a shit about anything from 'Metallica' to 'Hardwired'.
