The Christian message is an ever-growing theme in Metal. From the early days it was looked at like a fluke, but now some of the biggest bands in Metal have Christian members, like, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and Dream Theater.

But there are those bands which put their faith in Jesus Christ at the forefront of the their music, and those are the bands that I wanted to poll. I picked what I thought were the 8 most popular bands from this faith, but left the "other" option just in case there are other choices. This list just deals with regular Metal bands, and not the Metalcore scene, which is heavily populated with Christian bands. So please don't pick "other" if your choice is a Metalcore band.

So, please pick your favorite, and tell us a little bit as to why.

For me, I have to go with Living Sacrifice. While Stryper is will always hold a place in my heart, Living Sacrifice is still my pick. Their albums are all solid releases filled with some brutal music and powerful lyrics. Even since their break up they're still noted as being a huge force is the Christian music scene.

Poll

21

The only Christian metal band that I'm familiar with is a technical death metal band called "Aletheian". I have their album Dying Vine and it's really good. It was one of those albums that I just randomly bought for the hell of it and I was very impressed. Check them out http://www.myspace.com/aletheian

My favorite Christian band is Crimson Thorn. Totally awesome, and totally brutal. They're death metal, with a few black metal influences.

I would have to say Akercocke is my favorite.

Akercocke? You mean THE Akercocke? This must be a joke, because as far as I know they aren't a christian band, c'mon, the have an album called "Rape Of The Bastard Nazarene", nuff said.

On a side note, are Shadow Gallery a christian band? I've been listening to them recently and I find their stuff really great, nice prog metal, and the vocals, oh shit, the vocals are quite good, if they are christian they I'll have to say they are my favorites in this poll.

Thanks Dane, I'm not a christian (I'm an atheist) but reading this whole thread I learned many things about the subject, and I can say that now I'm not as close-minded as I were before It would be great to meet more rational christians like you someday.

It is in interesting thing when looking at Shadow Gallery and defining them as a "Christian" band. I typically classify a Christian band as one whose members are Christians and their lyrics are about some aspect of Christian faith. All the members of Shadow Gallery are devote Christians but lyrically that is not typically what is going on. Shadow Gallery along with several other Prog bands kind of fall into this group like King's X, James LaBrie, Glass Hammer and Galactic Cowboys.

Indeed there should be a significant amount of faith-related lyrics to be classified as "Christian".....

So you still didn't really answer the question. All you did was quote an old hippy saying. I would really like to hear your own explanation as to why Christian Metal is ironic.

I would first suggest reading Jesus Christ and the Headbanger: Understanding A Heavy Metal Christian Worship here on Metal Storm to start to get an idea, then we can further our discussion from there.

Because to me, by definition "metal" is the antithesis of Christianity (amonst other things).

Metal is just a form of music that came about from those playing a heavier form of rock music in the 70s. Had nothing to do with satanism or an attack against Christianity. Immortal, you may not like that Christian metal exists, but it does. There are a lot of great bands out there making metal music from a Christian standpoint. Anti-Christianity in metal is from my viewpoint is an oxymoron, because Metal is about freedom from oppression, strength, and releasing of deep emotions. People from all walks of life face these things, but the only difference is that Christians believe that salvation through the blood of Christ is the only way to become free from the bondage of sin. Metal's vibe of freedom from opression is perfect to be paired Christianity's message of freedom from the ways of the flesh.

On topic, I really like Extol. Have been listening to them a lot lately. Some of my favorite Christian bands are Vardoger, Impending Doom, As I Lay Dying, Immortal Souls, Pantokrator, and Kekal.
