And I thought I was alone.... Agony is quite neat though but yeah, I'm just gonna listen to my Ulcerate album again.
Yeah... NOW we're talking innovative.

Yep, throwing a bunch of symphonics at death metal was innovative when Nocturnus did it but not so much anymore.

And let's not even start at how Nocturnus did it better XP
Anyways, voted for Agony, is the less meh one

You're definitely not alone in this. Yeah Agony is neater than TGM, and now I'm listening to "The Destroyers Of All".

I wouldn't say that Nocturnus implemented symphonics, just this eerie atmospheric vibe. 'The Great Mass' utilizes symphonic elements as a basis for the music almost to the point at which the metal element becomes secondary (I'm sure that some would argue it does come second). Nocturnus used some sort of spacey 'atmosphere', as opposed to symphonics, as the basis for their music but this came second to the Death metal part of their sound. But what you have in SepticFlesh is an obvious focus on these symphonics to the point of which the death metal is in a way detracted or 'reduced' I guess.
I think 'The Great Mass' is highly innovative, I certainly haven't heard anything take the whole symphonics thing to this extent, at least not from metal. Whether it works as a 'Death Metal' album is definitely in question though.

Therion already did it way earlier as well.

Yeah that's true. It's also an interesting comparison, Therion was initially Death metal as well but strayed into symphonic territory. Wonder if that's what we're seeing here with SepticFlesh? Though these two have a very different sound imo.

Therion aren't death metal any more just like SepticFlesh isn't death metal any more

Both are mediocre really, and all the fuss about them...
The word "overrated" is overused, but these two truly deserve that lable.

The great mass is one of 2011 best albums, WTF are you guys talking about? mediocre? bad? Agony though sounds weak in comparison.

None of these two releases did any big impressions on me. But if I have to, I would choose the Agony over The Great Mass. The latter one is just way too experimental for my taste and comparing to the Communion, which is a total blast, this is a step down.

I would have to pick the Great Mass over Agony. Agony was a fun listen, I just think the songwriting on the Great Mass is superior.

Agony for sure. That album is like an old pretentious symphony orchestra conducter punching you in the balls. Nothing but hyper speed blast beats, an onslaught of riffs, and over the top orchestration. The best metal doesn't hold anything back, and Agony surely holds nothing back. The Great Mass should be a great album; it has great production, great riffs, great symphonics, but it's too midtempo.

Both great albums, the great mass being the better of the two.in my opinion.
for all this who did it first shite tho, see Paradise Lost's Gothic album...........all the bands mentioned here used this album as their template.

Pure personal preference, but The Great Mass is actually boring to me, where Agony has an orchestral element that you can headbang too!

This decision is sooo hard for me! I think the Great Mass is put together better (mixing/layers are more clear) but with that being said, I get partially bored throughout the album. The album starts strong, but I feel it gets weaker towards the end with the exception of Therianthropy. In my opinion, the same chugging lines feel a little repetitive. With more interesting riffs and better, tighter musicianship, Felshgod Apocalypse snags my vote. The Agony seems draw my attention more as the album continues. Plus I love Fleshgod's operatic vocals; they are a brilliant touch! Though, I may only have a slight bias since I listened to the Agony constantly when I visited Italy

Well. The Great Mass. Definitely. Why? All Fleshgod Apo tracks sounds very similar. I only remember 'The Violation'. 'The Great Mass' is masterpiece.
