Ok Im just curious to see what people have to say. On this because there is an ever increasing number of them and quite a few very average ones out there but which are your favorites (Why?), and what are some bands you might recommend.

Not this is a list that could get pretty long if I let it so we will try to keep it brief.

Please don't just come into this thread and just say something like "Nightwish!!!!!!!!!!!!". Give us a reason for why you have made this choice.
No point in a poll for this because there will be so many different choices.

Ok here are some favorites of mine
Epica (These guys are really an awesome band. Where or not they are female fronted they are a band you could thouroughly enjoy without the singing, but Simone Simons is an outstand singer that seems to be getting better with age.)

The Gathering (I strongly prefer these guys where they were fronted by Anneke van Giersbergen, but whatever, these guys have made some outstanding albums that hold up against the best of all time, plus Anneke is a great singer.)

Edenbridge (Its hard to believe but this was the first female fronted band I ever heard, and much to my suprise I found them quite enjoyable Sabine has a rather different voice, but she really improved on the later Edenbridge albums as she got more experience. But the main reason I really like these guys is for Lanvall's guiter work, it is truely outstanding, he is a rather underrated guitarest.)

Leaves Eyes (Liv Kristien has an unbelieveable voice, plus the band makes really good music to go with it. The lyrics are often pretty bizarre but nevertheless a band well worth a mention.)

I guess that'd be either Nightwish or Sirenia

But I give some advantage to Nightwish

I really like this female fronted grindcore band called Skarp. The vocals are definitely their strength.

In first position I will go with Epica. They are an amazing band that puts a lot of creativity behind their music and Simone as a better voice than Tarja imo because she can control her high pitch. In close second I'll go with Unexpect. They are full of influences and every album is different. The main higlights of this band are the bassist and the female singer (the violonist is pretty insane as well)

The Agonist is pretty good. fronted by Alissa White-Gluz. I like them cos she has a really deep scream that could easily be mistaken for a guy anyday.

Of all the female-fronted bands I ever heard DSO is the most impressive exactly in the way they present the vocals. Just splendid!

I'm a fan of theirs too. Though I hate their song structure (two choruses, then big breakdown instead of the last one)

And Alissa is hot as hell.

Nightwish should have been a male fronted band ever since Marco joined, but oh well, I'll go with them just because Tuomas is a superior songwriter. The late After Forever would be a close second.

I've always enjoyed great female vocals:

Tristania [Vibeke Stene is quite possibly my favorite singer... her haunting vocals go extravagantly well with the dark, morose atmosphere of (earlier) Tristania songs.]
Epica [Although I think Simone Simons's voice can be a bit boring-sounding at times, her singing ability and vocal range are incontestable.]
Lacuna Coil [Cristina Scabbia sings in the contralto vocal range, which is the lowest/deepest possible for women... I find her voice to be very unique and powerful but she obviously cannot hit high notes as adroitly.]
Within Temptation [Sharon den Adel's vocals approach something near perfect in my book, sounding eerily ethereal and high-pitched.]
Deadlock [Sabine Veniger is a *decent* singer who sounds more like she belongs in a pop band than a melodic death metal one, which is why I think their music sounds so bizzarely unique.]
The Gathering [With Anneke van Giersbergen, at least -- she has exceptional range and power.]
The Sins of Thy Beloved [Anita Auglend and her ridiculously high-pitched vocals...]

And, finally, I must accolade Alissa White-Gluz from The Agonist with an honorable mention, since her growling vocals initially fooled me into thinking it was a male singing. Well done.

Theatre of Tragedy's earlier works are practically gold (pre-Musique) I actually liked their Old English lyrics, and Liv Kristine's vocals were just magnificent.

Matter of tastes. Metal music + female vocals is not my cup of tea. Even if music would be otherwise good, if you put female vocals on it I'm out. I don't like it, that's all.

At times they aren't very noticeable however, and as such the negative impact loosens down. But, if that's how you feel, fine.

It's purely a matter of tastes in vocals and not about women in metal. For example, I have absolutely nothing against female guitarists, bassists or drummers, as long as they're good at playing their instrument.

Yep. Even I dont like metal with female vocals. Unless it's vocals like Angela Gossow's which dont sound feminine at all even if she is female. I just don't think female vocals suit metal at all. And I have heard a few female fronted bands who Ive liked musically, but Ive never really been able to get into them because of the vocals. It is just a personal preference.

Probably Epica, best range + projection + Vibrato. Greatest display of technical ability. I love DM, BM etc, but since anyone can chug some milk and do the vocals, I don't like the female extreme metal singers just like I don't like the males for the most part either.

Fools, none of you have mentioned what is indispuabley the gratest female fronted metal band evah- Salome. Their vocalist, Kat, can hit notes lower than a lot of male vocalists-and it's a sludge/doom band, not a flowery sympho/goth/whatever other flowery metal style band.

I wasn't using flowery as an insult. I like Epica and Rhapsody, both of which are very flowery. Soft would have been a better term I suppose. However, it's not to common to hear a female in an extreme metal band. Furthermore, how does milk alter ones vocals?

REally? Alright, mucus collected in the throat severally alters ones voice because drops of mucus attach to the voice box. I can sing along to Suffocation, etc etc for about 10 minutes after drinking a full glass of chocolate milk although I am female. It's fun to do but doesn't take a single drop of effort.

Hmm, you learn something new everyday. Well, even if the vocalist apparently has no skill, I still like the band
