I think San Francisco and Boston are tops, mostly because of the quality of the bands, since the attendance at shows in SF is kind of weak.

I went with New York , not so much for New York itself, but the bands in the area. Incantation, Immolation, Dying Fetus and so on. Cannibal Corpse started in New York, even tho they are thought of as Florida metal.

In the 80s clearly San Francisco, when Metallica still made metal...^^ and today in NOLA of course, they've just the most awesome bands there at the moment - Eyehategod, Down, Crowbar, Goatwhore, Corrosion of Conformity etc...

Well, I know. All that sludge started way earlier ... but they are still *there* you know what I mean? and there are some very young and promising bands there too (e.g. haarp)! but tbh, I don't think that you can't find music scences like this anymore. Music business and society changed a lot over the last few decades, and the internet did the rest to bring everything closer together (which is good in a way). And for me, personally, I'd always have wanted to experience such a scence myself so that's why I chose them, I guess I am born too late lol
