Out of the two continents, which one do you think has better scenes in metal, America or Europe? Despite other countries having their own scenes (like Brazil), America and Europe are the biggest places in the metal scene. America created genres like progressive metal, thrash metal, and death metal, while Europe created genres like traditional heavy metal, black metal, and power metal.

Thanks for registering to this site to give us your 2 cents on how the rest of the world should reference geography. You've made your case. We still don't really give a fuck.

And if you Argentinians refer to us like Chilean's (Mr. Doctor) do, only as "Estados Unidos", you are a dropping off a full third of our full name, which is also incorrect. I find it amusing peoples that cannot get our proper name right are whining about how others refer to us.

Now can we get back to the topic at end?

The name given to the whole continent in the 15th century is America, like it or not. So we are all americans, from Canada to Chile.
And I don´t understand why annoy you that my first post it´s about this subject.

But the fact that many people use America just to refear USA doesn´t mean that it´s correct.

And yet it is correct to refer to the United States of America as just America. If it were to include middle America, South America and Canada it would have to be The America's.

Argentina is part of The America's but NOT of America for that ONLY refers to the United States of America all 50 or so states of it.

The correct term is 'MERICA.

Hi. Keep in mind that America it´s a whole continent, so the comparision it´s correct. The problem is that very few people know bands from Argentina, Brasil, Canada, etc.

I beg to disagree, sir. The United States of America is one country, with one (kinda) language and one (kinda) culture. Europe has a couple dozens languages and cultures. So naturally, their collective metal scene is more varied and colourful.

I'm not quite sure if the OP meant "America" as in the US or as in North and South America. Because there's a ton of good bands from the Argentine, Brasil and Canada.

I like some bands from Canada and from Brazil. How many good bands do Argentina have? I'm not knowledged of that scene, but the only band that come to my mind that I have listened to is Vibrion, which by the way I like.

To my fucking honest opinion, 2 Argentine bands I really like it is, Hermética and Mastifal.

Both are powerful thrash machines which engulf their music horizons VERY differently. Other than that, just like you even I doesn't know about their underground Metal scene.

Btw that the US created DM can be debated.

What do you mean? Are you thinking of bands like Venom and Celtic Frost as death metal, or what non-US band could have created the genre?

Argentina has Fungoid Stream for starters.

As for non-US DM, you live in Sweden... one of the largest breeding grounds for DM. if interested in the subject of the origins of the genre, i highly recommend Choosing Death as it does a good job in exploring the many roots of the genre and showcasing various flashpoints where it started springing up.

I have read Choosing Death, great book. I know swedish death metal well, I have also read the book Swedish death metal, but I think the swedish scene started in 1986 with Grave, Morbid and Merciless, and at that time there already were plenty of american death metal bands. For example "Seven Churches" was released in 1985 and Death and Master had released some demos.

You're not the only one who leans in that direction and thinks the same. My metal collection is overwhelmingly European as far as where the bands are from.

Kreator and black metal aside, I'm a thrash metal kind of guy, so USA gets my vote. I also enjoy a lot of early death stuff, but don't particularly care for the Swedish "death n' roll" type stuff (ex. Grave, Entombed, Dismember, Unleashed, Bloodbath) Exodus, Death Angel, Deicide, Death, Possessed, Slayer, Testament, and Nile are bands I regularly listen to almost their complete discography.

For the average band Europe is better, but when it comes to great bands America has just as many.

it´s like if I say Africa just to refear Egypt.

Never in my entire life have I heard that. It'd make more sense in South Africa's case, but Egypt, no way.

It was a comparision, nothing more.
But the fact that many people use America just to refear USA doesn´t mean that it´s correct.

It's not correct in Spanish, but it's correct in English, which is the language we are using here. Spanish speakers don't get to decide how the English language works, you only get to decide how Spanish works.

Just some musings I've had on the subject:

Quote:
I've noticed people often express a preference for European bands over American bands (and occasionally visa versa). The odd thing is I'm seen contradictory explanations for why people have this preference. For example, I've seen people people praise European metal for being more complex and polished, while I've seen other people praise it for being more raw and stripped down. Here is my explanation for this.

First off, British metal needs to be excluded as it's something else. They created metal and expanded upon it by creating doom metal and the NWOBHM as well, but they don't really have much to do with what people think of when they think of European versus American heavy metal. That's why I used the term continental metal, though unlike in the traditional definition of continental Europe it's important to include Scandinavia. With these definitions out of the way I can go into the difference.

What I think it really comes down to is each continent contributed two major genres. American produced thrash and progressive metal, while Europe produced black and power metal. According this site's terminology, that's one form of extreme metal and one form of melodic metal for each, which is what creates the the contradiction described earlier as people tend to be making the comparison based on one of the two aspects.

Now, obviously those continents have contributed far more genre than these four, but the point is that it all reduces down to them. For example, death metal, groove metal, and metalcore are all really just variants of thrash metal at their roots. The teutonic thrash metal bands meanwhile tended to be more closely aligned with early black metal than their American contemporaries.

Overall, it has less to do with the specific genres, and more to do with the ideas those four genres represent. Thrash metal is about pure pommeling aggression, contrasting with the more atmospheric darkness of black metal. Progressive metal leads to all sorts of technical experiments, while power metal focuses on a strong sense of melody.

Nowadays the main contrast between the scene is between European melodeath and American alternative metal of various sorts. Despite coming out of death metal, melodic death metal has more to do with black and power metal than it does with thrash, reflecting it's European origins. And while alternative metal often bares little resemblance to thrash and progressive metal, those subgenres genres are it's principle roots within metal.

While it may just be a coincidence that various genres ended up arising where they did, I think it's possible that cultural differences between the America and Continental Europe may have contributed. Generally, European metal comes across as more lofty, with a sense they are trying to continue a great tradition, while American bands come across as more grounded, just trying to create an experience in the moment.

One and we canty judge, todays metal is way out borders, fools believe only norway has BM, they had never heard Dutch or Germanm scene and so, its in all genres, same they say I like thrash, megadeath, metallica, but never have heard about UK Evile and so on....

For me the choice is easy, thinking of all the bands I listen to regularly, the only bands off the top of my head that are American are Death and Allegaeon, and System of a Down who originally got me into heavier music.

There's about 30 European bands I can list off easy from Europe that I spin on the regular.

I mostly listen to various forms of death and black metal. I tend to stay away from straight thrash and '-core' bands, America is known for these genres.

Are you trying to start an argument with me? Are you telling me America is more known for their black metal than northern Europe? I think you misunderstood my point.

I listen to Agalloch a bit but honestly I enjoyed the Pillorian album better than any Agalloch album (yes I know I'm in the minority). Ashbringer may be my current favourite American band.

I really love the German and British Metal bands a lot (if you count the UK as Europe), So I'm more inclined to lean towards Europe......But to me it's close though. The Germans especially appear less likely to let the pressure of hip/modern trends influence them.

But both are guilty of exporting garbage metal/hard rock to the world of course.......

Europe has Gothenburg Metal and "Flower" Metal (Melodic-Power Metal).

The US are/were a cesspool for Overly pop-influenced/keyboard laden Glam Rock.......Not to mention Groove Metal, Nu-Metal and Metalcore (which is just a watered-down, more emo version of Gothenburg Metal).......Industrial Metal was pretty shit too.

......So I took all of that into account as well

I find it depends what genre we're talking about. I prefer the USA for death metal and power metal, Europe for trad metal, black metal and doom metal and a tie between the two for thrash metal (with South America also coming on strong). This is only a sweeping generalisation and there are great bands all over.
