i'm asking here about the melodic metal scene, so don't shove shagrath or dani filth up my ass.
1.Rob halford-my choice. right now, his voice has degraded, but you have to face the fact: no-one gets higher than him. just listen to "dissident aggresor", "victim of changes"(79), "diamonds and rust"(79), or "painkiller"(i fucking honestly thought that the last bit was done by a different singer).
2.Tim "the ripper"-his live album with priest has simply one of the most horrifyingly long scream i have ever heard("victim of changes) also check out "diamonds and rust" and "a touch of evil" from the same cd. a for the iced earth period, the cheesy backing vocals mostly ruin the vocal performance, but a outstanding moment is the verse parts from "the reckoning".
3.King diamond-he can replicate multiple characters with his HUGE range, but his shrieks sound quite girly to me. nonetheless a great shrieker.
4.Eric adams- you might think he's not good enough to be here, but his enormously high pitched roars convinced me to add him to my list.
5.John greely- you might know him as the vocalist on iced earth's "night of the stormrider", as he has also an enormous range, almost as big as king diamond.
i vote rob halford.

Halford. By tradition, and because I really like Judas Priest and his screams make me get shivers.

Either Halford or Eric Adams. Not much to say about them, other than that their voices are both awesome - Adams' screams in 'Battle Hymn' are some of the best I've heard. And of course, Halford is Halford. 'Victim of Changes', anyone?

Halford it is.

Rob Halford for me, even though I do enjoy Eric Adams and The Ripper a lot. Halford's shrieks seem impossible, nearly inhuman. No one should be able to have that much range with their voice.

You know a few months ago i would have said Rob Halford, because that guy can hit some notes most girls can only squiel out. But i voted for Ripper... because i went out and bought Jugulator. Ripper dosn't just shriek, he dose it so clearly and cleanly.

Another option for this section would have been Geoff Tait, I've heard that guy let off some great shrieks.

omg Halford is the best all his life time he was training on his Vocals listen all his album all his songs and u will understand what i mean
King Diamond has a great talent he can change his voices from "girly" to a "Dark Creature" like Mellissa from their debut album Mellica
but i vote Halford
the other are just lame for me

I can't stand King Diamond's shrieks! They are so obnoxious and annoying to me (no offence to fans).

I'm going to go with Eric Adams! Tim Owens has the purest and cleanest shrieks ov them all but I dunno, I really like that ov Eric Adams, it makes Manowar songs all the more entertaining

King Diamond doesn't shriek really...he just sings in falsetto which a well respected style of vocals outside of metal than what the others on that list would do...maybe out of that list I'd pick Halford...

I like Tim Owens' vocals on the Iced Earth records, so I guess my vote is obvious. Halford is a really good one, as well.

The problem with Anselmo is his inconsitency as a vocalist. He can't get up on stage and belt out Cemetary Gates like it was recorded, my guess is they took more than one take to get it right the first time.

I voted Halford because...come on. He is the template that all other heavy metal shriekers base their voice on.

I'd like to give some honorable mentions to some young blood shriekers (everyone in the poll are from the old school)

Cam Pipes (3 Inches of Blood) deserves mention because his live performance is great, he hits all his high notes even after growling and barking like Udo. Also, his shrieks toward the end of Dominion of Deceit should forever place him amongst heavy metal's greatest shriekers in my opinion.

Also I'd like to mention Into Eternity's Stu Block for Timeless Winter. Wonderful, over the top shrieking.

sure, Cam Pipes is great, i love how insane the beginning of Goatrider's Horde is, it's that great 80's riff and then... WA WA AWA WA WAWAWAWA WAAAA he sounds so vicious, it sounds like Abigail on steroids and speed lol. i can't even understand what he's saying (something with "unleashed" at the end? ). it reminds me of Ripper on the song Rapid Fire on Priest's Live Meltdown, the little bridge after the 'rapid fire' riff break(wielding the axe comes the one culmination....) that part also rules!

i think ripper should take over priest now. hes got a better voice at this point than halford does. but aside from that, death angel's singer can SHRIEK like none other. not melodic, note holding screaming but literal fucking SHRIEEEEEEEEEKING. listen to Kill as One on The Ultra-Violence.

My vote goes to KD, his vocal melodies reverberate in my brain days after listening... can't get enough!

wow, it's a tie between Halford and King Diamond... interesting KD truly has a unique voice, i mean he sounds like a fucking police siren lol. but halford still owns, he clearly out-screams KD's best part(GRANDMAAAAAA...) on the song Dreamer Deceiver in the mid section(AAAAAAHH... WE ARE LOST ABOVE...), and then there's Ram It Down, but that's enough KD-owning for now lol.

and of course Eric Adams would come third in my mind, his best is clearly that inhuman scream in the end of Hail and Kill that goes on for about 20+ seconds.

as i said though, i think i should have added Phil Anselmo of Pantera, cause of the songs Power Metal and that guitar-voice duet in the end of Cemetary Gates is incredible... also Shattered is a pretty damn solid Halford impression.

I didn't read beyond here, I creamed my pants just thinking about that bit in 'Dreamer Deceiver'. Halford wins.

Hi all,

I like much more Halford from this list. IMO he displays a technique more developed than the other ones.

However, my ever favourite vocalist is Geoff Tate from Queensryche since he gets every kind of tones, not just the high pitched ones. I mean, he can be bass, tenor and even mezzosprano.

Another vocalist that are worth mentioning for technique and for their natural qualities to be able to cover this range -bass to soprano- are Moonspell vocalist, and all Therion-like bands you can figure out have great male vocals covering all these ranges. Also please pay attention to Rammstein vocals. It is a perfect example of a tenor.

It's Eric Adams or King Diamond, but I wouldn't really call King Diamond a "shrieker" so I'm gonna go with Adams.
