Sonata Arcitica has many good ballad: The Misery, Draw Me, Tallulah, Shy, etc. I also love Manowar- Courage as mentioned above.

Threshold - Avalon it has a lot of feeling very good lyrics and piano parts great song

Demons and Wizards- Fiddler on the Green IMO is the best metal ballad ever. it's almost... magical

i like "save me" by edguy, and of course "heart of steel" is a classic. it's the kind of song i'd have played at my wedding

it's not a genre really, it just means that the bands are a bit over the top/corny/take themselves too seriously. but it's not a bad thing either

i think a good example of a cheesey song is "blood brothers" by manowar

well about Manowar taking themselves "too seriously" i am agreed (but it doesnt matter )...but speed metalers and especially Edguy

but well, even if...i simply love such a "cheesy ballads"

Some Scorpions songs, Angra songs like Rebirth or Bleeding Heart, or Tears of the Gragon from Bruce Dickinson and maybe Fade to Black ... if that one it's a ballad properly

Ahh well... I'd say it counts.

i have re-listened Manowar's Gods Of War album and i have two observations from this :

1) Gods Of War isnt bad album in any case...in fact it is almost brilliant album

2) Blood Brothers and Hymn Of The Immortal Warriors are damn great ballads - maybe "cheesy", but well, this is exactly what i like and enjoy and demand from metal

It's a bit different from the songs already posted, but my favourite mellow song by a Metal band is "Loveless, Godless, Flawless" by The Project Hate MCMXCIX. Very dark and beautiful. I also really like "Illusion?" by Trail Of Tears and "Requiem" by Delight.

For more traditional metal ballad teritory I would have to go for any one of Opeth's mellower songs (they are all great, but if I had to pick only one it would be "Harvest") or something like "Life Flow" by Threshold. I don't really like Power Metal ballads that much, but Nightwish and Sonata Arctica have some good ones, I would say that "Swanheart" and "Sleeping Sun" are their best.

It's the secrete ingredient of all successful metal bands today. They eat a margarita pizza before they record an album and the cheese factor helps a lot.

lol...i will have this in mind when i will be creating my album one day
