Lamentari - Ex Umbra In Lucem: After releasing two excellent EP's comes the debut album from this Danish band. If you like symphonic blackened death you're in for a real treat. This is excellent stuff with superb production and an massively epic sound.

Heard this one yesterday and can +1 the recommendation; like Exmortus last year, I enjoy the rare occasions when bands incorporate neoclassical elements, particularly if they do it well like here

One of my favorite releases this year so far, definitely worth a listen

Satanic Priest - ...Of Blasphemies & Lust!: Sometimes you just wanna have some fun when listening to an album. Satanic Priest from El Salvador gives us 25 minutes of speedy, blistering blackened thrash mixed with a heavy dose of punk. The half decent production just adds to the dirty aesthetics. It's nothing groundbreaking but damn if it isn't a lot fun. Enjoy another obscure band from a more unusual metal country that you never would've heard of otherwise!

With small packages comes such delicious thrash albums that purifies my soul.

Good effort, not the best among the lots. Long way to go yet it's so near.

Silent Deep Ocean - The Throne Of Whispers And Dust: The most beautiful album of the year thus far? Possibly. This is some very atmospheric gothic doom with a lot of ambience and angelic female vocals. There's hardly any growling here except for the title track that wanders into funeral doom territory. Enjoy!

Great minds think alike

Kesselschlacht - Iron Coffins: Do you like Kanonenfieber? Of course you do, we all do. Then this is definitely something to check out. Although a German name, Kesselschlacht hails from Oregon in the Pacific Northwest and just like Kanonenfieber, this is a one man show and the brainchild of a guy named Jared Johnston. And Jared sure wants to give Noise a run for his money when it comes to war themed metal. Here we have some fast, ferocious and very angry black/death spitting out lyrics about War World II. This is a great warm up while waiting for the new Kanonenfieber album coming out in September. Enjoy!

Polish SubRosa Some chillout music.

ZØRZA - Hellven: This is a Polish band I discovered last year when they released their debut EP IEI. Now they've relased their debut album and what we got here is an excellent mix of melodic post-black and blackened death. On both the EP and the album they've also thrown in an ambient track aptly called "Zorza" and "Zorza II" respectively. If you liked Hauntologist's release earlier this year you're definitely gonna like this one too. The Poles are definitely bringing the A game this year.

Inner Landscape - 3H33: Next we head to Lyon, France to find the debut album by Inner Landscape. This quartet states that they draw inspiration from American atmospheric sludge and they're naming Isis, Intronaut and Sumac as influences. Got you intrigued? Then you better hurry and check this one out because this is some pretty damn fine post-metal that sounds more like a seasoned band than newcomers.

Aussichtslos - Schicksalstotschlag: Yeah, I'm not gonna try to pronounce that album title. Still, here we have the third offering from this Austrian band after releasing not one, but two albums in 2021. This is black metal sung in German for that extra impact of anger. Not sure I would call it melodic black though even if the album is full of great guitar melodies. Nonetheless this is an album I clicked with instantly. Can't say that there's something original about it, but hellishly good it is. Sometimes that's enough.

Just found out about Scene Queen… Definitely DO NOT recommend!

Time for another batch, this time leaning mostly towards black metal.

Under Victoria - The Ephemeral: This is a one-man black metal band from Melbourne, Australia, leaning mostly towards melodic and atmospheric black. The Ephemeral is the third full length album and the production has taken quite a big step forward compared to the first two but still maintaining a somewhat lo-fi feel to it. And that cover definitely looks like an alternative take on Suldusk's Lunar Falls cover, which also happens to be from Melbourne. If it's a happy coincidence or if there are any relations between the bands I do not know.

Carnivora's Feast - Teufel: Teufel is German for devil, which is quite fitting when hearing the devilish and very much psychotic experimental avant-garde black metal offered here. Although a German album title this is a Greek band (good year for Greek metal!). One thing is for sure though, Teufel requires your full attention to fully get that mindfuck going, because there's a lot of strange rhythms going on here. It's a demanding 45 minutes but all the more rewarding if you let it engulf you. Just listen to the track "Aurora" and feel your brain melt. Hands down the best avant-garde album of the year so far. You heard it here first.

Sætaɪər - Underworld Oath: Here we have a band from Barcelona, Spain and this is there debut album, which draws clear inspiration from traditional old school black metal. Nothing really original here in other words but they sure make up for it with a great atmosphere, excellent vocals and a lot of blast beats. If this is your kind of black metal this probably will tick most of your boxes. Very enjoyable album.

Cailleach Bheur - Cailleach Bheur: From Scotland we get another debut album. Here we're offered five lengthy tracks, spanning between 8 and 13 minutes, of atmospheric black metal. Usually I'm not a big fan of murky production but here I would say that it actually works in the music's favour, giving it a more dense and doomy atmosphere. That awesome cover art really tells you what to expect from this album.

Macocha - Macocha: From Czechia we get some very good hardcore with a slightly blackened atmosphere, blended with the classic HM-2 sound that was made famous by Swedish death metal bands in the '80s and early '90s, to give it that extra punch and perfect sound. This is a short but intense album, clocking in at just 27,5 minutes. But damn if those aren't some pretty frickin' good minutes.

Mothman And The Thunderbirds - Portal Hopper: a fun, vibrant-sounding, mildly eclectic prog album with occasional more extreme moments but a broadly melodic approach. It's an album I could be tempted to do a review for, but unfortunately I don't really click with the vocals

Conjuring - Odium: Conjuring is one of my absolute favourite one man black metal bands. The difficult third album has just been released and it doesn't disappoint. We get lengthy tracks with a superb atmosphere and great melodies, a beautiful ambient interlude in the middle and another ambient track to close the album, top everything off with exceptional vocals and we have a winner. This one is definitely gonna end up high on my end of the year-list. This is my best recommendation so far this year so I hope you'll enjoy it.

Usually when you black metal cross punk its either buried raspy vocal crust or black metal with sludgy break downs, or borderline hardcore. I think this is what it's actually supposed to sound like. Waldgeflüster front man on everything.

Speedfreak - Hellspeed Rock N' Roll: According to MA there's three bands called Speedfreak with this spelling. This particular band hails from Mexico and plays blackened speed/thrash much like Satanic Priest I recommended further up in this thread. The Central Americans really seem to enjoy playing this kind of metal and I'm certainly not complaining. Again, nothing original, old school sounding and not as fast as Satanic Priest but they're still kicking some serious butt. If this is your kind of metal you will surely enjoy this one.

Mýrdal - Helvíti: Judging by the band name and album title you'd think this is an Icelandic band but this duo actually comes from Germany. After a self titled two-song EP released in 2022 now comes another EP that is more fleshed out, containing five songs and almost half an hour in length. What we get is an excellent blend of Icelandic style black metal, which I probably would describe as harsh atmospheric black, and your typical German style black metal. I would've picked this for the CCs but I got another EP coming in the next issue and this was one was released in May so that's why I recommend it here instead. The artwork is really cool too with a serpent dragon coming out of an erupting volcano which was what caught my attention and made me check it out. No regrets there.

Malconfort - Humanism: Does Malconfort sound familiar? Maybe you figured out why but if not, the name is taken after a song from Deathspell Omega's 2010 album Paracletus. So now you also probably know what to expect. This is avantgarde black metal infused with free-form jazz and it's very atmospheric too. Think a softer version of Deathspell Omega and Oranssi Pazuzu and you're pretty spot on. And they're signed to Transcending Obscurity. So are you intrigued? What are you waiting for then? Check it out already! I also need to mention that the band consists of members from Sea Mosquito and I can highly recommend their album Igitur from last year too.
