He already failed miserably as a writer with Kill Bill

So true. Maybe the best example of style of substance I can think of.

People actually gave a rat's ass about the story in Kill Bill? Hahahahaha. KB is among his most stylish movies and I defo love it though and had enough cool bits like the five point palm exploding technique and backstory of Pai Mei eventhough its all handpicked parts from earlier classic movies.

It's not about that, I think. Plenty of amazing movies out there with simple or minimalistic stories. I admit that I saw both vol1 and vol2 a long time ago, but I remember there were scenes that repeated information we already knew (long scenes too), then there was the fact that we got Lucy Liu's characters backstory (also pretty long) before we got Bill's or the Bride's. Lucy Liu's character was given so much time, even though she was no 4. on the to-kill list. This didn't make sense to me. Also, vol2 was much slower-paced than vol1, making watcing them one after the other a pretty boring experience. I'd say Kill Bill had potential as a film, but it's like Tarantino went for all style AND someone fucked up what was left in editing.

Never had any kind of problem with "style over substance" nature of KB films. The slow pacing and long narration was ok for me because it made the action scenes all the more cool and great when they finally arrived and really loved the second part over the first given the fact it had my favorite parts, the training with Pai Mei and the Micheal Madsen scenes. And that chinese backstory was also quite funny with that over-the-top anime sequence and how she finally ran over the table and chopped a guy's head off.

Traffic (2000)

Nah, I may be exaggerating here but it was just fucking boring to me. Not sure what the problem is but Soderbergh movies always seem quite a bit indifferent to me. He is able to make even the most dramatic and interesting scenes look yawn-inducing on screen which was the same problem with his Che films. Nothing special in del Toro's performance either. Not really a fan of multiple storylines in a single movie and this especially sucked at it. I'm yet to see any movie since Magnolia which really excels at it.

Sicario (2015)

One fucking thriller of a movie. Johan Johansson's score really builds up and adds to the tension, no wonder he got onboarded for Aronofsky's next venture. Loved how effortless Josh Brolin and Del Toro's performance seemed. Worth repeated watching. The border crossing scene was my absolute favorite though and I can already see many video games stealing and getting inspiration from it.

Saw it a few days ago now and tbh I don't see anything special with it whatsoever; I'm quite surprised at the rapturous reception it received. It was ok, don't get me wrong, but it was also kind of dull, plodding and full of non-characters, aside from Brolin at times, as well as having a paper thin plot. Del Toro's character in particular was beyond forgettable. It wasn't an even particularly interesting film from an aesthetic perspective either. Some of the gritty imagery was well done but the protracted border crossing scene to me just went on for way too long and failed to build up much tension tbh. Thinking back there's almost no reason whatsoever for Blunt's character to even exist in the film [SPOILER]outside of some contrived bureaucratic necessity. Also her partner was there literally as a plot device to [SPOILER]: link her to her would be assassin / informant, in a totally improbable way....

Lawl. Well tbh I went in with zero expectations and was quite impressed when I saw it as I usually don't rush to watch movies with lead female characters so had postponed this for a long time. Again I don't think the plot was the center point here so I didn't find it being weak as I thought it was decent enough, the usp were just the two insanely tense scenes: the border crossing one and the underground tunnel crossing and they were both tense enough for me. del Toro was quite good, not overtly complex or nuanced but his character didn't turn out to be what I expected which is I thought he might be the secret bad guy or something of that sort. Blunt's character was just a pov vehicle for the audience I guess to show how tense and serious a jobs the other agents were doing and how a rookie would feel in the middle of it. All said, atleast seems you have a interesting perspective on it.

Yeah, I get that it was primarily from the perspective of Blunt's character, but I guess I don't need a film to tell me that someone put into that situation and not told what was going on or why they were there is going to have a bad day dealing with it. I found the two twists - I guess you could call them - a bit on the nose and maybe even cliche to an extent. Probably wouldn't have minded as much if 3 quarters of the film wasn't basically preamble to those revelations. Was expecting something a bit deeper and more involved.

I'll probably check out Enemy and Prisoners to get a more balanced view of Villeneuve. Intrigued to see what he does with the new Blade Runner. Not expecting great things but after Arrival it might be ok.

I actually thought Prisoners' story was wafer-thin and not Sicario. Also was just thinking few days back how good Arrival have to be to match Sicario considering how well the tense and thrilling sequences in Sicario are. But looking at it ya his usp seems to be creating and building up tense and nerve-racking scenes. Gonna watch Enemy now. Let's see how that turns out.

Hobo with a Shotgun (2011)

It has some Rodriguez / Tarantino vibe in it. A really cool movie, and I do not think it's just a bloody picture without any meaning behind it. That's not true. This could be a brutal vision of our not too distant future. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning. 7,5/10.

Shame is his best if you ask me, I found the other two you mentioned to be slightly overrated although still good films.

Exactly, a 98% RT score for Hell or High Water? Nah, it was good but nowhere near that flawless. For more exquisite and inimitable neo-westerns, I'd definitely recommend Slow West. Now that is a movie that was really worth the praise.

Enemy (2013)

Weird, thrilling, captivating and creepy. Really really good drama thriller by Denis Villeneuve. Stellar performance by Jake Gyllenhaal too, easily among his best. Seems he is heavily under utilized in useless and crappy american movies. He seems to be capable of quite some really controlled and intense roles like this. Good shiz overall.

Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)

Easily the most eye-catching and eye-candy-filled of all the three movies and I'd just go on record that the KFP series is among my all-time favorite CG animated trilogies along there with Toy Story and Despicable Me. So I quite enjoyed it a lot tbh. Only sad thing was that there was too little of Oogway and Shifu who are easily the most interesting characters for showing how unorthodox/polar opposite a fighter Po really is. Bryan Cranston was decent but nothing mind blowing I guess. Also the Kai character never sounded like JK simmons to me the whole time so that's not a big standout either I guess. Fun movie but I think the least exciting among the series. I feel like Po should be challenged more next time around to have an interesting movie.

Whiplash (2014)

Re-watched this. Damn, this is always good. J K Simmons is an absolute treat to behold. Also worth noting that the family dinner scene has one of my favourite movie conversations ever. Not that it is quite expansive but is very incisive and I relate to it a lot.

What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

Taika Waititi movie. He has directed and taken the lead role as well. Barely enough stuff here to make a pilot episode even but it is a movie anyway. Quite enjoyable and very non-insulting comedy. Production values are absolutely top-notch. Would've loved a bit more about the vampires history (like that really interesting bit at the start and characters like Petyr) than just showing how they cope with the present and stuff like that. But a good watch anyway. Also makes me scratch my head why he would decide to shoot some mainstream crap like a Marvel movie.

Donnie Darko. Needs no intro. I just rewatched it afer last seeing it maybe 9, 10 years ago. I suppose now having to deal with ptsd nightmares this time around watching it gave me a consistent reflection towards the behaviour of its setting throughout. I understood much more of the dialogue this time more then my teenage mentality did. Back then I never got connected emotionally also to it as much as I did per se (The cinema scene) and I think that most of the time travel (let alone alternate universal) premise (except the end) is a mask to distract the more prevalent situation of mental health conditions escalating. Of course its not everything about what this film is meaning to showcase but I digress. Throughout the film seeing how everyone was portrayed to be the whole time I kept thinking myself "that behaviour dosen't seem normal", the world he's living in seems to embelish a dream-like well, delusion.

When Donnie's crying in the cinema is when he is realising he's schizophrenic condition is taking over him for the worse. That harkening music during this is something very touching and it awoke me.

Rogue One is a far better Star Wars prequel than the prequel trilogy was. Good effects to bring Peter Cushing back to the franchise (as well as a brief cameo of a young Carrie Fischer). I probably can't air my complaint about the space battle scene 'cause of the no spoilers policy, though.

It's sort of a spoiler, but mainly based on the firepower both sides have. One side should not have been able to beat the other based on the ships shown. A few lucky shots. (shock, unbelivability in a Star Wars film!)

Honestly I was so jarred by how weird Peter Cushing looked I couldn't concentrate on what he was saying for most of it. Uncanny valley in full swing. They should've just gone with someone else in make-up. Carrie Fischer looked even weirder I thought. It was this all over again for me. Still feel like we're a long, long way off in recreating believable CG human faces.

Film wasn't bad though. It lacked ant real character interaction / chemistry though but I liked the more working-class, down-to-Coruscant villain, even if the film was just him getting shit wrong and being moaned at by higher ups.

But those CG animals in The Jungle Book were dope though; especially that tiger. As far as the Celestial Body Battles series is concerned, the last time I watched that Force Awakens film in theatre, I happened to glance fucking 10 yr olds discussing death star trivia. Yeah thanks sorry, but I'm just too cool to pay for something that 10yr olds can comprehend.

Guess I'd just have to wait atleast half an year to watch Rogue One.

Like, I dunno, The Jungle Book?

The day they stop making Star Wars films comprehensible to 10 year olds is probably the day I'll stop being interested in them. I want them fun and to appeal to the 10 year old me that gets excited by that kind of sci-fi / space opera thing.

Also saw Kubo and the Two Strings at the cinema a few months ago and ended up being one of the best and most beautiful films this year, and that's most definitely comprehensible to children.

Rogue One mightn't be too 'kid appropriate', since it was more of a war film in space rather than a space fantasy film. Saw a few kids leaving during it. (might have just been going to the dunny, athough I dinn't notice any coming back)
Jungle Book was really good. Only thing I didn't like there was the size of King Louis.

For the record I didn't watch The Jungle Book in theatre as well. And I only brought it up to discuss about that CGI imagery that they couldn't make human faces as much as they did with animals. Even the new Planet of the Apes trailer kinda affirms it maybe.

I guess I'm being too much of a dick but I only meant I am not ready to pay for it and go to the cinema these days. Force Awakens was a decent fun movie but too much of a rehash of the original for me personally and since I'm not a huge star wars devout I kinda lost interest in these new films.

Gotta agree with 3rd that I'm not interested in paying for new Star Wars movies (this includes any comic book movies as well and stuff like The Jungle Book) I will still watch them eventually, but they're not worth the high theater prices. I'll stick to movies that I think might at least be good.

Finally got to see Arrival last week though and it was grrrreat. Probably my favorite film of 2016. Loved it. Good stuff.

I only go to the cinema when it's a something of a visual spectacle. Star Wars is pretty much the ultimate cinema film I'd say. Can't really see the point of going to see a drama or something that doesn't emphasises action or effects.

The Planets of The Apes recent ones looked quite good I thought, but that's probably because expressive primates don't really have a real point of comparison so are easy to take as they are.
