Megadeth and Metallica have been trying to out do eachother for years. Dave Mustaine was an Ex-Metallica guitarist, and made Megadeth to show that he doesn't need metallica. Metallica the more popular of the two, cut thier hair, and sold out, touring with bands like Linkin Park, Limp Bizcuit. Meanwhile, Megadeth's still going strong. Who's better? Would you rather go to see live?

In my opinion Megadeth is the better of the two. Metallica is a bunch of fatheads who have sucked balls since Ride The Lightning. Megadeth still sounds great, and has the Gigantour going, while Metallica is busy filming their next documentary about, whiney disagreements, and how the band is falling apart.

Megadeth for consistency and having better musicians

Touche. Megadeth all the way.

Agreed, Metallica doesn't have anyone who can touch Chris Broderick, and for Void who loves the shredder for Toxik, Chris is one of my favs his Chaos theory, etc is quite an accomplishment!

Chris is also amazing live. He'll be standing their ripping out those Hangar 18 solo's, not looking at the fret board, and give "Sup's" to the audience, with this grin that looks like he's saying, "Yeah, I'm awesome.".

Chris actually suxx live if you ask me: he really messes up Marty's solos. As far as his lead work on Endgame, it's also a bit over the top and doesn't always fit the music of Megadeth.

I actually think Chris plays Marty's solos very accurately. Chris is a great player, but my problem with him in Megadeth, is he's very robotic, and his solos lack the soul and feel of players like Marty and Chris Poland. Although Chris B probably is the best guitarist Megadeth have had in a technical sense, I think don't think his style gels well with Megadeth. *shrugs*

Yeah definitely it is his style that does not match the music of Megadeth as I have already mentioned. I just checked some of Marty's solos he played, and indeed, he plays them quite accurately, but I definitely remember being pissed at how he plays Marty's stuff... Maybe later I will find something. BUT... he definitely screws up the first Peace Sells solo at the Big Four DVD.

Anyways, he should something like Jeff Loomis did on Zero Order Phase...

Let's get it straight, Metallica hasn't sucked since Ride the Lightning, they have sucked since Master of Puppets. ...and Justice for all was their downfall, I don't want to blame it on Jason Newsted, but Jason Newsted is why they've sucked. The black album starte it and Load and Reload were terrible, St. Anger was garbage. Death Magnetic was somewhat redeeming. As you can probably tell I'm a Metallica fan. I've recently discovered Megadeth's back catalog and think it's pretty awesome. I'm not as familiar with the personnel as you guys, but it sounds like there has been some guitarist lineup changes that you aren't too happy with. If Dave Mustaine would have stayed with Metallica, we would only have 1 band to wish was better, now we have two. I'm glad Mustaine split from Metallica those 20+ years ago. Megadeth and Metallica are both awesome, without them new bands would have who to draw inspiration from? Guns n' Roses?

Kind of contradictory, but in any case, Jason had no relation to why they "sucked" (quotation marks as I don't think so). Jason is a great bassist and an incredible back-vocalist with massive stage presence. Metallica definitely lost something when he left, and I miss him so much when I watch their live shows. Rob might be more proficient, but no one needs that with Metallica. This band is about energy, power, and charisma, less about technicality and subtlety; well, Jason contributed this character of the band, and it is hard to emulate that, if possible at all (well, Rob definitely fails at that).

It's ridiculous how people blame Jason Newsted for the downfall of Metallica ; blame Hetfield and Ulrich as they are the usual songwriters. Newsted was never let much in the songwriting process. You can count the songs he co-wrote on the fingers of one hand.

Exactly, and the best songs on And Justice by far are the ones Jason co-wrote.

Too true. I was genuinely impressed with how well he played Rust In Peace (album) live. I've listened to that album so many times I can tell if somethings' amiss but he played flawlessly.

Even i really like both bands i voted Metallica, and i really don't understand "what Metallica has become"and similar stories, for me it's still the same Metallica, even if i prefer their golden age i don't see point in making bunch of Master Of Puppets clones just because it works on people, for me that would be sellout instead of making music according the moment how you feel, people going through changes and different periods they should express that moment through their music, and that is what i think Metallica did on their latest albums, even if they are not great as Black album, but this is just my opinion.

I pretty much share your opinion. I do not think we have any right to judge any artists for changing direction. Talented people want to explore different realms of the art, and that is why they delve into "experimentation." I think Metallica's discography shows how diverse the band can be throughout their career writing great songs in different styles.

Megadeth all the way. I think Rust In Peace is superior to Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. Mustaine has more talent than all of Metallica put together. And despite the lineup changes, Megadeth have been more consistent in producing quality music. The only area Metallica can compete with Megadeth in is live gigs. I've never seen either live but recent tours seem to indicate that Mustaine's voice ain't what it used to be. Still an awesome guitarist though.

I could never really get into Megadeth. I'm not a big fan of Megadeth, but I am a big fan of Rust In Piece. What a thrash masterpiece. Their other albums are garbage (imo), unfortunately.

Metallica on the other hand, while immensely overrated, have 4 great albums (Kill, Lightning, Master, and Justice). So my vote has to go to Metallica.

Megadeth!

I hate the voice of Hetfield as well as the Guitar Solos of Kirk.
I love the Melodic Guitar Structures of Megadeth, the Voice of mustaine.

I think Megadeth is Heavier but less Thrashy.

I picked Metallica for the sole reason that I went to the big 4 Indio show and wow. Metallica killed em all. I am very torn as I absolutely love both of these bands which to me are the 2 best thrash bands of all time. Metallica is a better live band I left the show in a haze I could not believe what had just happened after Metallica left the stage. Now in terms of non live aspects I gotta say it's a tie. Metallica have so many badass songs and so do Megadeth. One thing I will say is Megadeth is way more technical every single megadeth song is a bitch from hell to learn on guitar. Dave is a better shredder than any of the guitarists on any of the big 4 of thrash (Metallica included). Metallica was a better band in the 80s, Megadeth was way bigger in the 90s and up until the release of Death Magnetic Megadeth were killing it in the 2000s. Both are able to create tunes that range from absolute speed demon insanity (Fight Fire with Fire and Rattlehead) to ballads that absolutely pour out their heart and soul (Nothing Else Matters and A Tout Le Monde) and that proves that both bands have incredible songwriters. Another I will say and this is more of an individual thing than a band thing is that Dave Mustaine for the most part does all of Megadeth's songwriting by himself, while (and I don't know how much truth there is to this) The Hetfield/Ulrich songwriting duo is a famous songwriting duo they co-write almost every song and during puppets Cliff Burton helped write a lot of the songs as well. But in my opinion Metallica has the edge by the smallest margin possible either both of these bands are immortal and will be listened to for generations after the band is gone. Lets just give thanks that we are able to witness such musical genius from not one but two bands.

Megadeth. First of all, Mustaine had a big impact on Metallica anyways, so it's hard to ignore that. Other than that Megadeth just put out a lot more interesting anf impressive albums.

If it was still the 80s, I'd be saying Metallica. But 'Tallica just jasn't been as good since AJFA.
And Mustaine is a waaaay better guitarist.

Megadeth. More complex and technical songs, wicked lyrics, and they managed to recover from their Commercialization Attempt Fallout.
Plus, Mustaine is a fucking bad-ass:

Even though I think both bands are great, I went with Megadeth. I enjoy Megadeth's lyrics better than Metallica and I believe their musicianship is vastly superior to Metallica's

Killing is my Business<Kill Em All
Peace Sells=Ride the Lightning
SFSGSW<Master of Puppets
Rust in Peace>AJFA
Countdown to Extinction>Black Album
Youthanasia>Load
Cryptic Writings>ReLoad
Risk<St. Anger
The World Needs A Hero>Garage Inc
The System Has Failed>S&M
United Abominations>???
Endgame>Death Magnetic

Pretty torn at this point. I mean, this argument has basically run its course, and I think my views basically equate any conclusions that can be drawn. Both of the bands' first four albums are absolutely classics in my opinion (I personally love ...And Justice For All. I like it's unique guitar tone, lyrics, it's tied with Load for my favorite Metallica album vocally, and is just a differant experience overrall). I am not going to bother choosing which one's thrash classics are better, because I can't. Megadeth always had the thinner, rawer production, and more technicality. Metallica on the other hand I found to always have more variety, more driving riffs, and better vocals.

After that, I also am not gonna compare the bands' 1991-2000 albums because I honestly don't care. They both drew from such separate influences than thrash, and neither did a great job at it. I think Megadeth's albums come off as a little it easier listening, as Metallica's "alternative" vibe especially in ReLoad makes it almost unlistenable as a whole, but songs like King Nothing, Attitude, The House That Jack Built, and Sad But True are fantastic metal songs when taken by themselves.

2001-present Megadeth studio-wise has been the better band I think. St. Anger (with the exception of Purify!) is an average album at best (and I mean BEST), while stuff like The World Needs a Hero, The System Has Failed, and United Abominations have at least been acceptable thrash albums. As for the band's latest releases, I have to say I like Death Magnetic over Endgame. Both fantastic albums imo, but once again Metallica's had more variety, less studio-induced wanking, and far better vocals (even if James Hetfield isn't nearly as good as he was a decade ago, Mustaine is worse).

Oh, and during any period of time, Metallica kicks Megadeth's ass in a live setting. I mean, I guess for the most part I am referring to Youtube videos, but I have seen them both in the last 12 months, and there was absolutely no doubt. Even if watching Chris Broderick play some of the most technical moments from Rust In Peace while walking around the stage, smiling at the crowd, and generally just taunting us with his ability to hit any note without looking worried about it was cool, Mustaine's voice was borderline embarassing.

This some great controversy. I love the first 4 Metallica albums but the Technical Jazzy style of Mustaine is so awesome. Plus Megadeth is back in a great way while Metallica is just barely playing good Metal on their latest. I still cannot forgive Metallica for Load, Reload, and St. Anger. Plus all the whining.

Metallica is (in my opinion) one of the best metal bands of all time. Exceptional musicians, a sound hard, heavy, aggressive, fast, yet sensitive, delicate and smooth, intelligent lyrics and a discography 10. Personally Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, ... And Justice For All, Metallica (Black Album), and Death Magnetic is their best albums, and Load, Reload and St. Anger are the worst discs (with the exception of songs like Hero of The Day, Until It Sleeps, Fuel, Better than You, Frantic and St. Anger), the other songs are boring and lack personality. Metallica is a good band, but I find most interesting Megadeth.
Megadeth is my favorite metal band for several reasons:
What caught my attention most of this great band were incredible musical compositions (Holy Wars ... The Punishment Due) that anything following the rule: Intro - 1 verse - chorus - verse 2 - chorus - guitar solo - chorus - end. The second thing I liked most was the incredible amount of guitar solos that could get into a song, and the incredible voice of Mustaine that nothing is a good voice, but fuck, it's great!
Here ends my story (I apologize for so many words, and also the terrible Google translation, because know that I am a Catalan with English lousy.
