Epic: very imposing or impressive; surpassing the ordinary (especially in size or scale); "an epic voyage"; "of heroic proportions"; "heroic sculpture" epic poem: a long narrative poem telling of a hero's deeds Well in that case I must say that Highlander the one by Lost Horizon is one pretty epic song

Seventh son of a seventh son by Iron Maiden and then 2112 by Rush. Among lesser known songs I would defenitely say Last goodbye by Sorcery. Anyone who has heard them? Great band from late 70's that deserve more attention.

The Poet And The Pendulum - Nightwish. A full symphonic orchestra, a choir, a very good boy soprano, bombastic performances by Marco and Anette and beautiful dark lyrics. A song that hacks your soul to pieces and puts it back together at the same time. Memento Mori - Kamelot. The Black Halo. Nuff said. White Pearl Black Oceans - Sonata Arctica. One of the best stories ever told in metal.

For me, i have three epic categories, so here goes. 1. Random and epic goes to Sadistik Exekution for their song Fukking Death Mental. ( they replace all c's with k's for an obvious reason) 2. Truly EPIC goes to the band Running Wild, for the song Riding the Storm. Pretty Kick ass intro for an eighties band. 3. Death's version of epic goes to Oppressor, for Dying Inside...Hey, c'mon, they were the one of the first technical death metal bands!

It also suffers from the most insanely unpronouncable lyrics ever written, there's barely anything to the vocal performance other than hissing: svnthhhhsnnnnfffffffasvnthhhhsnnnnn. Feel free to disagree of course, I don't mean to attack you, but the song is nothing special.

1. Moonsorrow - Sankaritarina. Moonsorrow pretty much *defines* the word epic anyways - probably half their songs could be in the running - but this one is even more epic than their usual, with the 14 minute running time, the slow start with the burning pyre noises, and the ending the closes the album out the same way it began. 2. Moonsorrow - Tyven/Sankarihauta (I'm proud, I spelled that without looking ) Same album, intro + awesome first song. Really gets your blood pumping. 3. Nightwish - The Beauty of the Beast. Not Beauty AND the best, from their first album, but the closing track on Century Child. This song pretty much encapsulates the entire album, and ends on a similar note to how it began. Utterly awesome, too. I feel like I've just watched an entire Broadway play or something (a great one) every time I hear this song.

Kong Hydnes Haug by Windir or any other long song from Arntor. The first track from Borknagar's self titled is very epic too. I don't know how to spell it though.

The song that came to mind first was Crimson by Edge of Sanity. 40 minutes of pure progressive death metal epic-ness.

There is a lot of epic stuff out there, a ton of it already mentioned! Whenever I think of epic I usually lean towards Blind Guardian, and that's what I'm going to do with this. Blind Guardian - Wheel of Time Granted, I am a bit biased since I am currently reading through the book series... However, if you have ever listened to Wheel of Time, then you know that it's laced with some really impressive orchestral work that strengthens the core of Blind Guardian. And, not to mention, Hansi's vocals with that range, both tonally and characteristically. Plus, how much more epic can you get when you have a song about a young man beset by fate, empowered by a force he must use to save the world, but using that force drives him closer to insanity?
