"Do you like female vocalists in metal bands?" The answer for me is simple: no. Not at all. About this: Written by F0rang3l on 12.08.2010 at 13:34 Most of the bands people refer to as 'symphonic metal' (sorry but I always found this label ridiculous, as you can find symphonic music in pretty much every genre, including Death and Black Metal - and this reminds me of the pompous, pretentious and ludicrous way Rhapsody have the habit to call their music Hollywood Metal or Film Score Metal, as if they're in a superior league and better than any other band on earth, another example of Turilli's inflated ego), is not even metal from my point of view or barely metal. So, if female vocals fit only in this 'false metal' genre, then it means female vocals don't fit any metal genre, in fact.

12.08.2010 - 23:06 Written by F0rang3l on 12.08.2010 at 21:55 Ive heard that quite a lot actually. A lot of people apparently thought it was a man singing when they first heard Angela. When I first became a fan of Arch Enemy, it was while Johan Liiva was still in the band, so I knew even before I bought "Wages Of Sin" that their new vocalist was a woman. I was taken aback still when I first heard that album though. Id never heard a woman doing death vocals before. Although I had myself attempted them in the past...

13.08.2010 - 00:14 Written by vezzy on 12.08.2010 at 23:32 Well, Ive had a lot of throat problems due to a chronic sinus condition Ive had since I was 14. So I cant really sustain singing any type of metal, especially death metal, for any great length of time without my throat becoming really sore. I have heard that in most professional death metal singers, especially those who employ the gutteral style, it comes from the diaphragm. I never knew that way back when, when I was attempting it. I just growled and rasped.

It depends. In symphonic metal, you have Simone, Lisa, Heidi, Tarja, Vibeke, Floor, etc and they are very good. In thrash or let's say metal that contains growling, you have Sabina, Candace, Krysta, Alissa, Maria, etc, they are very good too. In doom, you have Lisa and Carmen. They fit perfectly with the music. Nera is amazing too, she fits perfectly. Sometimes, female vocalists don't fit too well. For example, Angela, don't get me wrong. I like her, but I don't think her voice fits perfectly with the music, but that's just my opinion.

I'd say that I dislike about 90% of female metal vocalists. This is due mainly to the obligatory narcissism that having a female fronted band entails. My point is that a band with an ugly yet talented male vocalist is going to generally be taken a lot more seriously than a band with an ugly female vocalist regardless of how good she is. It just goes to show that there will always be a double standard for males and females in any realm, including metal.

It doeant matter if metal band with female vocal is proffesional and popular, I still think (and my opinion will never change) that metal scene is for men ONLY. growling and screaming females look like transvestites on the scene (it makes me puke). FEMALES FUCK UP METAL MUSIC!!!! don't feel insulted, girls (im a girl myself)...but your place is in gothic or rock scene, not metal. \m/ to all metal chicks who support metal guys and their music!

Girlschool proves you wrong. Acid King proves you wrong. Dracena proves you wrong. Gallhammer proves you wrong. Now, none of this shit features Tarja vocals or Angela Gossow vocals, which is a good thing, to say the least. That said, female vocals sound great in traditional heavy metal, speed metal, thrash metal, doom metal and even some variants of blackened metal. It is a shame that the worst examples have become the most known (Tarja and Gossow).

Yeeeahhh, it's so much fun to "support guys" ....... *rolls eyes*. That's what girls are for. I was going to say WHAT NO MALSAIN! but they are indeed on Wishmaster's list, nice one :-) Added bonus of Phobos on drums in that band, he's ace. I wouldn't intentionally seek out a band with a female vocalist, but I wouldn't avoid them for that reason either. Give everything a shot and judge it on the same level.... and if Gossow's all that springs to mind, widen your listening net! One of my favourite non-extreme voices is Swawa, who fronts Taunusheim and has her own project, Carved in Stone, which is simply gorgeous. She's good in those acts because her voices simply fits.

As soon as I know that the vocalist is female, I won't even bother to give a listen. That's how I have no interest for female vocalists in metal.

30.08.2010 - 10:06 Written by RavenKing on 29.08.2010 at 15:00 Avoiding a band just because they have a female vocalist is just as stupid(imo) as listening to a band because they're female fronted.

30.08.2010 - 14:19 Written by lilith on 30.08.2010 at 10:06 The reason is quite simple. I know my tastes very well, so I'm aware there's no chance I could enjoy a metal band if they use female vocals, unless it's impossible to hear that the vocalist is female. Find it stupid or not, I don't care. My tastes are what they are. And there are way too many female-fronted metal bands since a while. This trend is getting ridiculous.

30.08.2010 - 14:27 Written by RavenKing on 30.08.2010 at 14:19 So, if a female vocalist tricked you into thinking that it's male vocals, you'd possibly even enjoy the band? And when you knew the truth you'd stop enjoying the band?? It's a peculiar case of anti-feminism and misoginism... Written by RavenKing on 30.08.2010 at 14:19 I don't even know what to say to that... It's not a trend, it's a normal thing. Do you also oppose female bank clerks and female teachers?

30.08.2010 - 14:28 Written by RavenKing on 30.08.2010 at 14:19 You can barely tell Merlin (Rus)'s vocalist is female. They're a death metal band and they don't have the annoying Gossow growl/shriek. But I agree with the last sentence.

30.08.2010 - 15:08 Written by Daniell on 30.08.2010 at 14:27 I could be wrong here, but I think he means he could enjoy female vocals if they didnt sound female. I dont think he has a problem with the gender, just the female sounding voice along with metal music. I can hardly be accused of anti-feminism and mysoginism seeing as a I am female, and I dont like female vocals in metal music. There are rare exceptions like Angela Gossow, because her vocals are very male sounding, but generally, I dont think female voices suit metal imo.
