I'd actually compare it to Swallow the Sun and Cormorant. Mainly because those are two other bands who receive a lot of praise, but eventually don't really offer anything interesting. Portal of I is decent, I'll give you that, but far from mind-blowing. Oh well, droolers gonna drool.

That's also why I compared them to Septicflesh in an earlier post.

Yeah, but Septicflesh were actually awesome and you're just too stupid to realize it, so I didn't mention them in my post

This album took me by surprise. Every few minutes, the songs just take really unexpected turns.

Cormorant...offer nothing...interesting... ?
Though if a comparison can be drawn between them and this album I'll definitely need to have a listen.

I really enjoyed this album, everytime I listen it I'm amazed because of it musical level. however, sometimes the clean vocal line seems very extemporized although the singer has a great voice. This detail prevent me to give it a big 9

Speaking of the drums did anyone else think that the blast beats/double kick was not varied enough and way too overused and found its way into sections that'd be better off without it?

like i said, i'm not very used to bands like this (altho i don't consider this bad or dislike-able). I like the journey they take you in, BUT like you said, sometimes i was like, dude relax/take a break, it's like he has a death clock timing up he's ass

Well i am bored to hear all "Pro" wannabees elitistic reviewers (apart from Troy of course cause he is unique, one of a kind ) whining about anything thats not innovative to their ears cause each and every note "reminds" them something else...for gods sake we should all quit hearing metal then cause Black Sabbath played everything about 35 years ago...innovation is not the issue. Its common knowledge that innovation in metal is dead for over a decade or 2 so please STOP expecting it.
For me, and many others i presume, sometimes all it takes to lift up an album from the pile of same colored music is not the final result but simply JUST THE EFFORT of a band to blend musical expertlse with unique elements and above average compositions, and in this album the effort is astounding. The final result may not be so "robust" but the whole journey to the "unknown" destination this album takes the listener is amazing and that is what makes me listen to it repeatedly for so many days now, to enjoy this awesome ride with ups and downs and lefts and rights whilst not getting sick and tired....and if you happen to love this particular haunting violin sound then you are certainly in for a hell of a ride

I'm enjoying "Portal of I" very much, but I'm actually enjoying what this album could be, rather what it is right now. The idea is fantastic, but the realisation is "just" very good. It's a great album, but if this dudes do their thing right, their second album is going to be *brilliant*.
But the album's imperfections actually sound cute to me. I don't know, I just listening to that kind of albums, where you see the band's potential, but also their current inabillity to achieve it completely. As I said - I'm allready superstoked for Ne Obliviscaris' next release.
+1.

Ahh, the first 6 minutes of Forget Not... awesome... great feel to the playing, really gripped me.
but after that, it turns to chaos, except for the guitar solo... disappointed by how such a great build up turned to a mediocre end...

I find it hard to go past the clean vocals, for me they are to similar to the plethora of bands that exist in Australia - most commonly found in alternative/rock groups that are predominant (in Australia).
Saying this though, its all a bit messy (for me) - some great elements mixed with some generic melodies.
It will be interesting to see what the next release holds.

This album is too complex imo, more than it should be, also the length of this album is pointless, its really hard to keep focus on whats going on throughout the whole thing.
but as most of the comments have stated they have lots of potential and im really excited for their next efforts.
in my opinion this is a very good album but sometimes its just too much and a bit messy.

That is a really interesting fact, I find the vocals quite unique. Must be like that because the only Australian band I've ever listened before this one is Virgin Black.

Yeah, you won't find many (if any) of the bands with the similar vocal-style on MS - as they're not quite Metal specific. But for years there as been many similar bands etc. with the same vocal style - almost like its own genre.
In saying this though I can definitely see the appeal of the vocal-style, but it has completely worn off for me.

As far as I'm concerned, this album will more than likely claim the Number One spot for Best Album of 2012, unless the long-anticipated Wintersun, along with Katatonia have anything to say about that!

I think I'm gonna mostly agree with the "this has great ideas but is a jumbled mess crowd"...mostly. The album starts off kind of disjointed for tracks 1-4, sometimes making me feel like I am listening to completely different songs (but are usually part of the 10+ minute song I was still listening to). Some interesting Pianos and Violins are embellished throughout these songs but sometimes feel like they just don't fit. The black metal elements are also not as well integrated with the rest of the music as I feel it should. Luckily tracks 5-7 seem to get the formula more correct, kind of like Enslaved's "Axioma Ethica Odini" but with some very well played strings interlaced throughout the song. Sadly, I feel the songs don't need to be as long as they are and even the strings, although very lovely sounding, just don't make anything memorable (but I have difficulty remembering very difficult time remembering melodic music such as Belakor).

I'm going out on a limb, Of Breath and Bone will be the number one album- maybe two- but this won't be the number one album. Top ten- yes. But not the number one slot- not that number one means anything aside from general opinion. I've been listening to Rapture more than anything. Going backwards in the metal world is more enjoyable than focusing on new releases. Aside from Forget Not- and - And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope, I find this album quite boring. I know I gave it an 8- but I'm being generous. Just because it won't be the number 1 on the list, doesn't mean it can't be number 1 on your list.

I'm very serious about not being serious.

I think I prefer the demo a little bit more, could be because there's more strings. But I love all the songs here too

I noticed that the demo received a lot of attention but I didn't check it out myself. Yeah the strings are mainly what keeps bringing me back to this at the moment, definitely sounds like something unique is going on here.
