Folk Metal is a fairly new genre (though it was started a while ago we havnt seen such a jump in folk/viking metal bands as we have in recent years) and along with this unique form of music we also see more unique vocalists to fit the music, voices that might otherwise be considered terrible, but like said, they fit the music nicely. Above I put 7 of what I believe to be some of the most well known folk/viking metal bands, and a wide variety of different vocal styles. I am aware Ensiferum and Finntroll both have had a change in vocalists but I put up what I believed to be there vocalist during there prime (to date), so theres the 'Other' option, which is there for all of you who love your underground bands (so please dont bitch about who should or shouldnt be on the poll, just vote other and specify). AND PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR POSTS/REASONS FOR WHO YOU VOTED FOR!

Now for my vote, I voted for Warlord Nygard from Turisas, he has so many different vocal styles, he can go from raspy almost punky sounding singing to black metal-esque singing (most recently shown in the new album) to death growls to clean singing that has a very unique timbre to it making it hard to grow bored of. Not to mention he writes almost all the music including all the orchestrations and neat lyrics.

Poll

It disappoints me to see Alan "Nemtheanga" Averill absent from this list. His impressive, majestic voice never fails to amaze me.

Im sure it disappoints many that the other 500 folk metal bands vocalists are left out as well. There's an "other" selection.

Had to go with Vratyas Vakyas, his vocals are just.. hypnotizing, taking me some other place in another time. Really like Mathias too for his wide range and quite vigorous singing style but as I had to choose only one Vratyas it is.

I would have a hard time choosing one, to be honest. I have a general dislike for Folk Metal (Imo, it's an overcrowded trendy genre plagued by genericness and mediocrity) and I usually don't like at all the kind of semi-harsh vocals typical to Folk metal and I dislike even more the habit those bands have to throw in weak clean vocals.

Heri Joensen without a doubt. his vocals on By the Light of the Northern Star are breathtaking. Particularly the song 'Into the Storm'. Not only that but the lyrics he writes are so epic and inspiring you can't help but listen to certain tracks over and over and over again until you've essentiallly had your 'fix' of the music.

Other than him I'd go for Andreas Hedlund from Vintersorg. His vocal range is superb, he switches from screaming black metal vocals to clean folk effortlessley and is a great musician.

I also voted for Heri! His voice is one epic instrument. I almost voted for Mathias from Turisas, he is "glorious" as well, but Heri's voice is one of the reasons why Tyr is so different from other viking metal bands. The depth and richness that he brings is nearly unmatched, on all Tyr albums, as well as live.

I like I.C.S. Vortex. I know most people don't associate him with this genre because he is mostly known for Dimmu Borgir, but when he sang for Borknagar was when I first heard him and his vocals on The Archaic Course and Quintessence blew me away when I was a kid getting into this type of stuff for the first time. I also love Vintersorg. I know since he joined Borknagar, they have become less of a Viking/Folk band and more progressive and spacey and what not, but his early solo stuff like Till Fjells is awesome Viking metal.

Mathias, has a very "grand" clean voice that carries very very well. Even though I like bands like Nomans land and Forefather a bit more when it comes to this stuff, I'd still say him for sure.

They're making popsicles in hell, we agree on something.

Though I do miss the way they sounded on The Varangian Way. The growls seemed to make the grand, clean vocals seem more pronounced by contrast. Stand Up And Fight is severely lacking in harsh vocals (2 or 3 songs by my count, even then, they're a minor part), which sort of took away the appeal of the clean vocals for me. It works both ways I suppose, if they decided to make an album with entirely harsh vocals, they would seem less powerful without the clean vocals sitting next to them.

I still think Miklagard Overture is the best song they've ever done, and probably ever will do.

I am going to slit my wrists now, I swear.......

JK JK! I usually loathe growls and cleans together, but for the most part he is good at both, usually one of the 2 are bland or subpar. Gotta go with your vocalists strong suit!

I know they're not folk metal, but they would fit under Viking metal (I guess), so I'm going to go with Johan Hegg from Amon Amarth. He has a beastly growl, and an absolutely commanding live presence. Plus, he looks like a Viking.

I understand that they're melodeath, but since the term "Viking metal" doesn't tell you anything about genre, I lumped Amon Amarth in there due to their lyrical themes and overall aesthetic.

So you're basing this on image? lol.....Sounds like a stretch to me, and some people would argue that it does implying the band dabbles in folk, which AA does not.

Viking metal = "epic" black metal that often incorporates Nordic folk instruments.

Amon Amarth are only Viking in lyrical content. And appearance.

Though I hate any sort of flowery references, don't look at me. I loath AA, took Unleashed image and cut the nuts off it with their sound. That aside AA doesn't belong in this thread imo.

Kool, now we're on the same page!!!!! hahahah

Now what's interesting here, is on that list Ensiferum gets my vote for music, but Turisas get my vote for vocals.
