Blind Guardian - The Bards' Song- In The Forest, wonderful lyric. I like the vocal of Hensi in that song, very pure and strong.

I would have to say "Nothing else matters" by Metallica.

Threshold- Mansion has to be the best ballad ever followed by the bard's song and then Lazarus (if you consider)

Bathory is "blackened" viking folk metal imo...at least compared to "black folk" of Ensiferum, where i hear almost none black elements except the fact they are using growls

Whoa? Would certainly not call Hallowed be Thy Name a ballad. That's like one of the heaviest Heavy Metal songs out there.

Yes, those are not ballads, they are just slow in the beginning. I think that works pretty well in Maiden songs.

14.05.2008 - 17:39 Written by Ellrohir on 03.05.2008 at 17:18 Bathory sure IS black. Listen to the first three albums...yup, they changed style then, but the early stuff is as black as this forum's background.

Best ballad for me would probably be Lazarus - Porcupine Tree, or anything from the Opeth ablum Damnation, if that counts, that is.

For me, the greatest Metal ballad ever written is "Silent Lucidity". This song encompasses what a ballad should be. Beautiful music that is not sappy with thought provoking lyrics. And Geoff Tate's voice?oh that voice. Yeah I cry almost every time I hear this song.

Beyond the Realms of Death- Judas Priest or September Sun- Type O Negative and I don't know if this is considered a ballad but I think it's pretty balladesque... This Mortal Soil- Mastodon and Silent Lucidity, that's one of the only songs that can make me cry.

(Outside the doom genre) In this River by Black Label Society does the most for me. Quickly followed by While your lips are still red by Nightwish
