Actually i can't stand Metallica myself,i love black metal,and you certainly don't get many ballads in that genre.

Threshold- Mansion has to be the best ballad ever followed by the bard's song and then Lazarus (if you consider)

Bathory is "blackened" viking folk metal imo...at least compared to "black folk" of Ensiferum, where i hear almost none black elements except the fact they are using growls

Yes, those are not ballads, they are just slow in the beginning. I think that works pretty well in Maiden songs.

Bathory sure IS black. Listen to the first three albums...yup, they changed style then, but the early stuff is as black as this forum's background.

Best ballad for me would probably be Lazarus - Porcupine Tree, or anything from the Opeth ablum Damnation, if that counts, that is.

Of course, but read the rest of the posts before you post. The later albums aren't Black Metal at all.

For me, the greatest Metal ballad ever written is "Silent Lucidity". This song encompasses what a ballad should be. Beautiful music that is not sappy with thought provoking lyrics. And Geoff Tate's voice?oh that voice. Yeah I cry almost every time I hear this song.
