Seeing as Prog Metal is such a diverse genre I was wondering what peoples favorite band in this genre is and why. What album is your favorite, what do you think of this bands live preformance, and anything else you would like to add. My favorite Prog Metal band is Tool because all of their albums are amazing. My favorite is Aenima though because it contains most of my favorite songs by them like Hooker With a Penis. Although I haven't seen Tool live yet I would say it looks like they have a sick live show with their lights and everything else that's going on. Other favorites of mine include Opeth, Symphony X, Ayreon, Porcupine Tree, Devin Townsend, Evergrey, Shadows Gallery, Star One, Circus Maximus, Rush, and Dream Theater.

Ah, subgeneres. What would we do without them?

If it was certain that Tool were progressive metal band, I would choose them but I have my doubts whether they are progressive or whether they are even metal. I don´t like most of progressive metal, much of that IMO is just showing complicity solely for the sake of complicity which means masturbation for me.
Anyway, I choose Opeth because they almost never masturbate I have also started to cherish Pain of Salvation, yet they are still a bit too emotional for me.

I prefer progressive rock from the first half of the 70s to any other kind of progressive music.

Uku, just to let you know, Opeth masturbates the guitar more than Dream Theater does. I have seen both bands in concert several times, and Opeth shows off way more.

But about Tool: Tool is a Psychedelic Metal band. Along with Psychotic Waltz, Deadsoul Tribe, Porcupine Tree, and a few others. They are a sub genere of Prog Metal. They are not a very good example of prog metal, but they are one. Just like the Mars Volta.

The Mars Volta isn't really progressive metal though although they sure are one of my favorite progressive band. I have yet to hear any characteristics of progressive metal. I may have misunderstood what you are trying to say though because that part was just kind of added to the end of you post.

About Opeth having more "masturbation" on stage then Dream Theater I disagree I have also seen both bands live and when I saw Opeth they didn't go off into a 20minute improv thing in the middle of one of their songs although I'm not saying this is a bad thing because that was one of the coolest things I've ever seen I don't think either of these bands really do that they both play what the people who go see there shows want to see.

Edit: I'm also seeing alot of talk about Dead Soul Tribe in this thread can someone suggest me which album I should check out first and what they sound like because I want to know more about this band that I seemed to have missed.

By "masturbation" I didn´t at least consciously refer to DT . Although I must admit that I have never been able to get into DT, already their sound annoys me. Objectively speaking they may be excellent and I have no doubt concerning the talent of the members of that band but I am just not able to enjoy them. Although I haven´t listened to all their albums and I admit that my opinion may change some day.

As for Opeth, I tend to disagree about them showing off. They have quite a lot of passages where they repeat themselves a lot, though, in "Deliverance" (both album and song) and "Reverie/Harlequin Forest" for example. I haven´t, strictly speaking, seen them live but I have watched "Lamentations" and I don´t think their performance was "masturbatory".

But I´m a Tool-freak anyway, so I am probably not an expert in this subject.

I hope at least some of it was on-topic

Yeah, Opeth certainly does emote more in their guitar work...I find a lot of DTs guitar work is mechanical in places...when you see Petrucci on stage he's very mechanical with his guitar styling...I would say that Opeth's guitar work is more emotive and better structured in a sense then Dream Theater...more love and emotion is certainly put into Opeth's guitar work...Opeth don't show off because they still don't seem confident with their music so a lot of their compositions come across as very innocent in nature whereas Dream Theater's compositions come from years and years of training and seem very pretensious in nature...Opeth are repetitive in many cases but that's where your confidence kicks in...they know that riff is really good so why not repeat it over and over again (like at the end of Harlequin Forest for example...that composition is awesome and could've been made into a whole song...that's what I'm talking about...case in point)

Opeth's guitar work pertains more to prog rock like Pink Floyd and Camel, moreso than Dream Theater. At least that's what I think.

@Daru Jericho: You might also remember that Mikael said that one of his biggest influences is Camel...he also said something about stealing something from Camel on that Lamentations DVD...

At the end of 'Ending Credits' he sais, 'Did you like that track, did you? [screams] It's totally ripped of from a band called Camel'

BTW I just heard Riverside, and I'm speachless, this band is awsome. It's more rock then metal, but breathtaking, all the way. They remind me of Porcupine Tree from now and then, but they're not psyhedelic at all.

I second 'A Murder Of Crows', wich is their best album, IMO.

Haha yes. His humour is so dry and blunt. It's awesome.

I've been revisiting my Winds album. I really can't get enough. I love that band. They have classical bits in their music and it works ever so well but I'm sure there are some people out there who might find it 'pretentious'.

A lot of Opeth fans tend to loose patience with Mikael when he's on stage talking to his fans but they still love and respect him nonetheless...

I have a Winds album...The Imaginary Direction of Time...beautiful album...I love the violens and metal together the way that they do it...

I am not sure what RPWL stands for. I think it may be their initials, but that quote me on that. RPWL is a Floydish modern prog rock band. They have some awesome material. I highly recomend their 2005 release, World Through My Eyes. They are just really good, chill, relaxing prog rock band. I think you'll like them.

Kino has John Mitchell from Arena, Pete Treavas from Marillion and TransAtlantic, John Beck from It Bites (one of my favoirte Prog Rock bands!!!), and Chris Maitland from Porcupine Tree. Fantastic line up. Really strong music. They only have one album, Pictures which came out last year. An amazin g album.

Both RPWL and Kino are on Inside Out.

Well they are kind of more avant-guarde: Ved Buens Ende, Arcturus and Dodheimsgard. These bands are really amazing and unique. If you want to listen to any of their albums i recommend: Written In Watters from Ved Buens Ende, Aspera Hiemns Symfonia and La Masquerade Infernale from Arcturus and Kronet Til Konge and 666 International from Dodheimsgard.

Yeah, Floydish chill prog rock is good and all but I find that it's hard for me to get into it...I don't have that much patience...I think I'd have to be on something to enjoy it hahaha...Kino sounds like it has a great line-up of musicians in it and sounds worth checking out...I've never listened to It Bites, Arena or Marillion before but that's only because I can't find their stuff...not in a record store, not online...hrm, maybe I should just buy this stuff online perhaps?

Kap'N Korrupt, Go to Prog Archives for some samples of those bands. I think you will really like It Bites and Marrilion. If you pick up Dream Theater's movie 5 Years in a LIVEtime they do a song with two of the memebers of Marrilion.

Fates Warning simply because they started the genre,Awaken the Guardian is a masterpiece. However I do believe this is getting off topic,a lot of people are mentioning prog rock bands like Kino. Thats like me talking about Foxtrot by Genesis or Pawn Hearts by Van der Graaf Generator.HAHA i suppose I did what I was just ranting about only to prove a point,I know I'm not in charge here, but this is progressive metal thread is it not?
