This is a thread to see what people's all time favorite albums are they can be from any genre even if they're not metal that's fine. Please only pick no more then 10 albums and explain why they are your favorite.
My 10 Favorite albums in no particular order are:
Dream Theater: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - When I heard this album I was in grade 7 and at the time my version of metal consisted of only bands like System of a Down, In Flames, and Shadows Fall. When I turned this album on my entire world changed it opened me up into the genre of Progressive Metal. This album contains 2 discs and both are amazing. My favorite songs on it are The Glass Prison, Dissapear, and Disc 2.

Ayreon: The Human Equation - This two disc album contains so many of my favorite singers such as Devin Townsend and Mikael Akerfeldt. It's a great progressive metal concept album. Lyrically this is probably my favorite album of all time because it tells such a great story.

The Mars Volta: De-Loused In the Comatorium - This Prog Rock album is off the wall and contains great jam and ambience sections. This album is also extremely sporadic and wierd and that's what I like about it.

Tool: Ænima - This is one of the best albums I have ever heard every song on the album is amazing and I can't think of anything on it I'd like to change it gives off such a cool vibe.

Blind Guardian: Imaginations From The Otherside - Most people say that Nightfall In Middle-Earth is the best Blind Guardian album but for me this album is my favorite Power Metal record ever. It has everything I want to hear in an album great leads and big chours. This album contains so many great songs like Bright Eyes, Script For My Requim, Mordred's Song, and Born In a Morning Hall.

In Flames: Colony - This album contains some great melodies and is the last great album from Melodeath band In Flames. The acoustic passages on this album are what make me like this album so much. They can take acoustic interludes and make them so good that they don't seem like filler.

Iron Maiden: Powerslave - This is my favorite classic metal album it contains nothing but memorable songs and riffs. This album also includes my favorite Iron Maiden epic The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Megadeth: Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? - This is my all time favorite thrash album and one of the most aggressive albums I have ever heard. On this album you can really feel how pissed off Dave Mustaine is and every song on the album is amazing.

Opeth: Damnation/Deliverance - This album contains one half of really great mellow songs that I can't get enough of and the second half of the album is heavy as fuck. This album contains both extremes of music which is why I like it so much.

Symphony X: The Divine Wings of Tragedy - Another great progressive album that contains some great keyboards and neoclassical shredding by Michael Romeo.

Picking just ten is really really hard...but putting them in order first to tenth is just plain impossible. Here're my picks:

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Metallica - ...And Justice For All
(These two Metallica albums could've easily been accompanied by Ride the Lightning, but I had to restrict myself to two as I may only pick ten albums in total.)

Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Opeth - Blackwater Park
(The best Opeth albums, which means they're solid in my top ten as Opeth is probably my favourite band for the time.)

Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
(The almighty Emperor's magnum opus is pure magic from start to finish.)

Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
(This album mixes a dark, cold and evil atmosphere with catchy and groovy riffs and melodies in a unique way, blending the two together in a symbiosis where they feed off of each other. A perfect album.)

Decameron - My Shadow...
(The most under-rated band and album of all-time. This album is one of the best I've ever heard, and almost nobody knows about it?! I'm dumbfounded by this ignorance.)

Meshuggah - Destroy Erase Improve
(The riffs, the heaviness, the atmosphere, the anger, the beautiful leads...)

Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
(As much as I love The Shadowthrone, ND is Satyricon's grandest album. There are so many moments which bring shivers down my spine, make me close my eyes and just BE the music. This goes for almost all of the ten albums listed here.)

Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle-Earth
(As a great Tolkien fan, I was thrilled to get Silmarillion in metal music form in my hands. If you haven't read the book and know it throughout, you can't get enjoy this record as it is suppossed to be enjoyed.)

(My new list, deleted the old post)

10. Deathstars Termination Bliss
Catchy, atmospheric and sad... all at the same time throughout the whole album. Words can't describe my love and respect for this album and band. I was stunned when I discovered them live at a Cradle of Filth concert. The whole album is perfect from beginning to end.

9. Children Of Bodom Hatebreeder
Could've just as easily stood Follow the Reaper. Both albums have had just as much impact on me but Hatebreeder is one small bit better. It got me into growl and Extreme Metal. It will always have an important place in my heart.

8. Nightwish Wishmaster
It was between Oceanborn and this one. But while Oceanborn grew on me and at first just made me curious about more Nightwish, Wishmaster and I hit instantly. Tarja during her best moments. Amazing and so sad.

7. Iron Maiden Dance of Death
I had some burned CD:s containing Metallica songs and Brave New World and Rock in Rio... but this was the first Metal album I bought. I could have chosen Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Killers or Somewhere in Time but Dance of Death was my first. It also has some of their best songs and still remains just as good 5 years and a billion listenings later.

6. Norther Dreams of Endless War
The best Extreme Power Metal out there! Their darkest release and yet again also a sad album. Petri sounds like he's in pain and so does the music too. All songs are catchy hits and I doubt Extreme Power Metal ever will reach this standard again.

5. Opeth Blackwater Park
The perfect mix of atmospheric music and Death- and Progressive Metal. Nothing needs to be added and nothing needs to be removed. So emotional it almost brings me to tears.

4. Cradle Of Filth Damnation and a Day
An amazing journey through Genesis with orchestras, choirs and Dani's howls at their best. Got me into one of my favourite bands and Black Metal. It will always stand out in my collection.

3. Metallica Master of Puppets
The title song is by far the best song of all time. I know I'll never change my mind. Master of Puppets were there during the toughest time of my life and has always stood by my side when I've needed it. When I experienced the song live I seriously shed a tear.

2. Slayer Reign in Blood
So fucking crushing and fast it's insane! From Araya's peircing scream at the start to the evil sounding rain in the end. An unforgetable album. The most Extreme album I found very beautiful.

1. Dream Theater Images and Words
Best in every single category! Take all great words I've used in this post and blend it in a mixer and then add a dictionary of positive words. Only then can you maybe understand how much I love this album and always will. Thank you for existing Dream Theater.

it's hard to pick ten favourite albums of all time, but I'll give it a try:

1. Marillion - Brave (1994) - one of my favourite Hogarth era albums, there are several but I'll just list this one.
2. Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear (1983) - the best Fish era album IMO.
3. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (1973) - what else is there to say?
4. Rush - Moving Pictures (1981) - one of the best prog-rock albums ever made, Rush at its best, at least for me.
5. Dream Theater - Awake (1994) - my favourite DT album, as simple as that.
6. Uriah Heep - Demons and Wizards (1972) - UH at its best, an essential album in the history of rock music (IMO)
7. King Crimson - In the Wake of Poseidon (1970) - not KC best work but it's my favourite album of them; also their debut album deserves a mention.
8. Kansas - Leftoverture (1976) - an amazing work, my favourite album of Kansas
9. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of the Seventh Son (1988) - one of the IM's essentials
10. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound (1973) - my favourite album of them, one of the most beautiful works Genesis ever did.

I'll be back with another list if you let me, there are far too many albums that deserve to be mentioned.

Well I'm a metal and rock fan, so my list would be something like this:

1. Ayreon - The Human Equation: The Best Conceptual Album In the Metal Scene in my opinion. All the singers personify perfectly the emotions of the characters, the music is amazingly varied and the history really touches you. Who said that progressive music has to be tecnical?

2. Shaman - Ritual: One of the best Power Metal albums I had the chance to hear. The latinamerican essence flows with the metal as one genre. There are so many other folk influences too like arabic and scottish. The riffs are very heavy and powerful and the solos are a la Rhandy Roads.

3. Pink Floyd - The Wall: A classic album and probably the best conceptual album of rock. The history is very raw but it work amazingly. Roger Waters proves that he is one of the greates lyricsist of all time.

4. Dream Theater - Awake: For me their best album. It's their more balanced album but very dark and heavy at the same time and Kevin Moore was still been a member and a great contributor to their music.

5. Opeth - Ghost Reveries: This is the album that got me into growling and Mikael Akerfeldt has become one of my favourite vocalist of all time. The style of Opeth is unique and brutal at the same time and has become a trend to follow for younger bands.

6. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here: Atmospheric, psychodelic and futurist for me are the words that describe this album. The experimention with sounds guided Pink Floyd to compose one of their most interesting album.

7. Deftones - White: Deftones is another band that created their own style. The psycho guitar riffs and the warm voice of Chino made this album a masterpiece.

8. Angra - Holy Land: This was for the best time of Angra with the amazing vocalist/songwriter Andre Matos. The Music is very unique in a oversaturated genre like power metal.

9. Chancho En Piedra - Rindanse Terricolas: One of the best funk albums i have ever heard. The music is very energetic and the bass lines are amazing. It also includes national chilean anthems like Volantin.

10. Metallica - Master Of Puppets: Last but not least the best Metallica album has done and will always be a classic for all the metalheads.

In no particular order of priority:

1. Sieges Even - The Art Of Navigating By The Stars

"The Art Of Navigating By The Stars" is a cleverly written album with very high quality song compositions. The album contains plenty of intricate time signatures, creative rhythms and a variety of excellent guitar solos! The menu is filled with layers of acoustic guitars and sugarcoated with the clean tone of electric guitars. Although vocals rule and the guitar work is very impressive, the bass and drums are ever present and provide much of the entertainment on hand. Everything is so very cleverly prepared and skillfully tied together. For instance, there are moments in each sequence that I simply can't wait to hear and the build-up to each segment is just so well orchestrated as to give you a sense of complete satisfaction and jubilation every time they come around. I'm talking about truly unforgettable moments like; the chorus to "Stigmata," or the classical guitar solos found in both "Blue Wide Open" and "Lighthouse." And there many more moments to speak of...

Rare are the albums that only get better and better the more you listen to them over time. The Art of Navigating By the Stars is such an album, a progressive rock album for the ages. I can't imagine ever getting tired of it.

2. Russell Allen & Jorn Lande - The Battle

This is by far the best straight ahead metal album I own. Russell Allen of Symphony X and Jorn Lande of Masterplan both teamed up for this Magnus Karllson project and together they created music of pure energy. Once "Another Battle" gets going, you know you're going to get one hell of a workout out of this album. Very uplifting vibe. In fact, The Battle is my FAV workout album, just perfect for a one hour session. It's energy keeps me going and going, I hit the replay button and I can go another hour! The music is so uplifting that it keeps me battling for hours...

3. Kamelot - The Black Halo

This was another very sweet release with a very good variety of music within the progressive power metal genre. The album contains some very enjoyable tracks that will satisfy one's metal appetite immediately. Rarely have I bought an album that begs one to listen to it again and again. The Black Halo is such an album! It is not so much the originality of The Black Halo that draws you in but the overall care to detail and flow of the album as a whole. All of the arrangements on the album are superb, the instrumental interludes are classic and what to say about those cool little fills, there is just so much one can absorb in one sitting.

4. Riverside - Second Life Syndrome

This band hails from Poland and was the discovery of the year for me. With only two studio albums in their repertoire, the first being in 2004 and this one in 2005, they are effectively newcomers to the progressive metal scene. I discovered them in October 2005 and Second Life Syndrome got a whole lot more spins out of me than anything else I got last year and that includes Opeth's Ghost Reveries. It is a most diversified progressive metal album, going from the most soothing ethereal musical passages I've heard in quite some time to some truly excellent aggressive musical moments. Riverside has become one of my FAV bands of the new Millenium. Outstanding musical vision I tell you!

5. Testament - The Gathering

Testament's little gathering made waves in the underground metal scene in 1999. The music is technical but maintains its thrashiness from beginning to end with a good variety of different tempos and catchy hooks. At moments I'm reminded of Iced Earth and sometimes Nevermore comes to mind, but then Sentenced pops up with some clearly defined death metal moments thrown in for good measure. The Gathering combines some pure moments of ultra-speed metal with death metal. There lies the beauty of the album for me. I can't recommend it enough to those who like their metal extremely fast, furious and brutal. That's the variety of the musical styles you'll find on this album. It's all here, on one single disc!

6 . Stratovarius - Elements Part 1

On this album, the Stratovarius pristine trademark sound is alive and well. Intro to most songs are often atmospheric and emotional, Stratovarius has always excelled in this department, appropriately preparing the listener for what is to come. The band mixes aggressiveness with some heavy passages and occasional acoustic ones, moving from hyper-speed technicality to soft atmospheric moments and heavy melodic ones. Sometimes, they accomplish this all on the same track...such as on the Epic title track: "Elements." This is Stratovarius at their very best, instrumentally, progressively and in the Power Metal Department as well.

7. Charon - Songs For The Sinners

J.P. Leppäluoto writes sad grief-ridden songs and performs them with his deep soothing voice and with what I call an upbeat attitude, its just perfect for this genre and style of music. Energetic Gothic Rock/Metal with clean deep male lead vocals and some sweet female vocals added on for good measure. One rarely comes across such a fine genuine gem of musical brilliance and overall quality that leaves you completely speechless after just one spin. Songs for the Sinners is Charon's 5th studio release and when it comes to gothic metal, you'd be hard pressed to find anything better than this. Bands like HIM and Entwine are perhaps a little on the lighter side of the goth scale while Charon (pronounced Kharon) are definitely on the heavier side of things. There's also a good variety of keys used on this album, including an organ, sitar and cello that are used most effectively here. The nuances and atmospheres created on this album are some of the best you will find on any melancholic metal album.

8. Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done

This is my all-time FAV Gothenburg Metal album. No question about it. This album is just so damn good from the get-go that I've found myself listening to it regularly - without skipping a single track - since it came out in 2002. Dark Tranquillity have created music on Damage Done that encompasses so much of what I want to hear every time I throw a Melodic Death Metal album in my CD player, more-so than any album by Children of Bodom and Kalmah. This album rules!

9. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing

What attracted me most to this album was the overall quality of the songwriting, the inherent emotion-energy found therein and the good long-winded ambient space-rock moments as well. Steve Wilson went further than he ever has and in directions that many would have thought he'd never go. This risk taking attitude has helped Steven Wilson create and produce one hell-of-an album, truly one of the better prog albums of 2005!

10. Jesse Cook - The Ultimate Collection

This is mostly instrumental music, but don't let that little detail trouble you, Jesse Cook's fingers do all the talking anyway. Jesse Cook mixes rumba with flamenco to create musical magic. His music is mostly up-tempo and uplifting. He mixes acoustic guitars, bass, percussions, synthesizers, world beat samples, violins and more percussion instruments such as djembes and guiro. To create more seductive melodies he will mix all of this with Middle Eastern influences. If you like classical music, instrumental music or world beat music, you will totally enjoy what Jesse Cook has to offer on this double disc collection of his best material. Clever, seductive, sensual and energetic music, guaranteed to get you in the mood during a cozy romantic evening dinner...

//This is one awesome list my friend! I'm afraid to post mine because it might look a little something like this but im gonna try it anyway!//

1. Iron Maiden : Iron Maiden- This album really got me into metal. When i first heard it, it blew my mind away. The musicianship was incredible and for some reason, i love Di'anno's voice. I know a lot of people prefer Bruce's a lot more but for some reason Paul's voice really appealed to me a lot. The tracks Phantom of the Opera and Running Free really stood out to me.

2. Metallica- Ride the Lighting/ Master of Puppets: A two way tie for my favorite bands best albums. i dont even know where to start. These albums are so fierce and i love every track on them. Pure thrash metal the way it is suppose to be played!

3. Megadeth- Rust in Peace: Another thrash classic for me. The ultimate head bangers album. The riffs are really chunky and Dave was on top pf his game here for sure. A true masterpiece from one of my favorite bands ever. Rust in Peace...Polaris, and Take no Prisoners have so much attitude. I love it.

4. Riverside- Second Life Syndrome: The ultimate pure prog record ever. Love the mood that Riverside brought to the table. Duda's voice really is incredible. The soothing touch and magic of this album is unexplainable. I was really in touch with this album. Some of the songs felt like they were written just for me. It means a lot to me. The track Second Life Syndrome is one of my favorite songs ever. Epic!

5. Opeth- Still Life: Just an awesome record from Opeth. I think they mixed beautiful and moody songs perfectly with rough and aggressive songs here. If you just listen to this album, you can see how awesome of musicians and songwriters Opeth actually are. Fierce and beautiful all at the same time. Benighted, The moor, and Serenity Painted Death are for sure stand out tracks for me

6. Agalloch- The Mantle: I think its just scary how much talent this album possesses. One Beautiful track after another. Its just one of those albums you just sit down to and admire every song straight through. Its got a crazy Doom scary atmosphere that i admire a lot. My favorite songs on this classic are In the Shadow of our Pale Companion, and You were but A Ghost in my Arms.

7. Sieges Even: The Art of Navigating by the Stars: Just read the review in the quote. He hit it dead on! My favorite tracks here are The Weight and The Lonely View of Condors.

8. Porcupine Tree- In Absentia: Another classic brewed up from the master of production Steve Wilson. A genius at work here. If you want to mellow out and listen to some mind blowing music, this is the first album i suggest. Favorite tracks are Lips of Ashes and Gravity eyelids.

9. Testament- The Gathering/ The Legacy: Another tie between two trash classics. Chuck Billy really put a great deal of hard work and attitude into these albums. Once again, listen to these albums and see how true bay area thrash is suppose to be played! Favorites are COTLOD, Alone in the Dark, and Careful What you Wish for.

10. Dream Theater- Train of Thought: The greatest musicians on the planet really broke down a lot of barriers for them and went to a more metal direction with this album. Dream theater is so incredible because they come up with one beautiful album after another that consists of great music. Then this comes out and they switch to pure heavy metal! Favorites on this one are This Dying Soul, and As I Am

//Very hard to pick a top ten list like this without second guessing yourself after youve written it but i think i covered it pretty well//

Okay where to begin...

1:) Asmegin - Hin Vordende Sod and So: Pretty much one of those once in a lifetime, impossible to top albums. Great blackened folk metal combining four different vocal styles harsh growls, ear-piercing screams, soaring epic clean vocals (provided by none other than the mighty Lars Nedland) and a few haunting female sung parts for good measure. Probably the most beautiful blending of metal and folk and other classic elements I've ever heard too. The violin, accordion, keys and mouth harp blend really well with the sometimes chaotic guitars and drums.

2:) Agalloch - The Mantle: My favorite band's best album. Absolutely gorgeus acoustic passages and some of the most well written lyrics. John Haughm's clean vocals (more prominent on this release then any other to date) are wonderful and very emotional.

3:) 3 Inches of Blood - Fire Up the Blades: Fantastic heavy metal, Cam Pipes is my favorite vocalist in the traditional metal field. I love the other elements added to this album as well. The thrashy guitar riffs on Night Mauraders and Goatriders Horde, the galloping power metal feel of The Forest King, and the ever so slightly blackish twist to songs like God of the Cold White Silence...so yeah, metal.

4:) Die Apokalyptischen Reiter - All You Need is Love: I don't know how they came up with this stuff considering that nothing else they've ever produced quite measures up. The songs are both chaotic (Licked by the Tounges of Pride and Reitermania) and melodic (Gone and Hate), but they all tend to come together really well. The keyboarding is very involved and if you're a fan of keys it's a good album to listen to.

5:) Neurosis - Eye of Every Storm: In my opinion, the greatest release in a huge discograpy of great releases. The music is really down-tuned and minimilistic though not on the same level as most drone metal bands, which makes it more enjoyable for me. The title track pretty much sums up the greatness of the whole album, slow plodding guitars with Scott Kelly's muddy grungie voice going thru his entire vocal range of highs and lows. Very depressing, grey music (in the best possible way of course)

6:) Vintersorg - Till Fjalls: Pretty much how Vintersorg should have stayed, earthy and simple. Mr. V's voice is fantastic on this album, a performance he has never matched (Either with his solo project or with any number of bands he has fronted.)

I can't choose the other four just yet. I'll get back to you.

It may be a little too diverse for you all, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

10. Emperor - Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise
9. Carpathian Forest - Defending The Throne of Evil
8. Darkthrone - Sardonic Wrath
7. Deeds of Flesh - Mark of The Legion
6. Carcass - Heartwork
5. Borknagar - Quintessence
4. Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns
3. 1349 - Hellfire
2. Suffocation - Pierced From Within
1. Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines

Diverse? hmmmmmm? Those are great albums man, but I wouldn't call this list diverse at all because all ten albums are extreme metal. BTW, we share favorite Darkthrone albums.

the "diverse" list reminded me a lot of that great scene in the Blues Brothers at Bob's Country Bunker:

Elwood: What kind of music do you usually have here?
Claire: Oh, we got both kinds. We got country *and* western.

(Oh, I listen to both kinds. I got black *AND* death metal!)

It is impossible to compile alist of my 10 favourite albums of all time. Cause I don't have just 10 favs. It is highly mood dependent which ones will make such a list. I think that after 29 years of metal it is better for me, and a lot easier as well but still almost an impossible task, to compile a list of the 666 favourtie albums of all time.
