I dont actually know... All cymbal brands make smaller cymbals... I know that Zildjian and Paiste make cymbals designed especially for it... I'm not sure about other brands though, I haven't tried very many fast crashes...

I just realized, not many people seem to like Gretsch or Mapex. Aren't they more common in jazz & other non-metal areas?

Im a bit ignorant when it comes to drums, but how do triggers work? As I understand its a bit of a cheap way to play drums because it gives a consistent sounds no matter how hard you kick.

27.12.2006 - 01:14 Written by Sunioj on 26.12.2006 at 15:04 I wrote a response to this in one of the other drum-related threads, but there's a (pretty badly written) basic description here. Please bear in mind that this description is neither complete nor particularly accurate, and serves more as an outline. Amongst numerous other unfounded claims, the article states that "it is very difficult if not impossible to use in a more light setting such as jazz or fusion music", which is utterly false. There are many triggered sounds and samples used in abundance in a huge range of genres - triggering can be applied to any drum, and electronic drums are simply pads with triggers. Broadly speaking, triggering just means fitting an electronic sensor to some sort of playing surface - often, but not limited to, an acoustic drum - and connecting it to some kind of sound bank, which can take the form of a module (like a Roland TD20), a laptop etc etc. When the surface is hit, an electronic signal is sent from the sensor to the sound bank, which is then instructed to play a sound. This can take the form of a bass drum hit, or a loop, or a backing track, or so on. Many drummers use triggering to complement their acoustic sound. Turned from a synopsis into a bit of a yarn, but I hope it helps a little.

27.12.2006 - 10:03 Written by Sunioj on 26.12.2006 at 15:04 I agree with the cheap way... I think it's a bit of a shortcut. They allow people to play faster on double pedals than they'd usually be able to.. I don't have respect for that. Although, in saying that, some drummers are able to reach blistering speeds on double bass without pedals, but choose to use triggers live to conserve energy. - So I guess they're okay in that respect. ...Thats my input anyway lol

Is it easy to tell if a drummer is using triggers during a gig?

I get it, so the sensor is connected to any surface which is in turn connected to a soundbank ( the recorded sound ) which is also connected to the mixer's channel to control that sound, so I guess that would mean using differrent mics for that surface would be replaced by the sensor.

28.12.2006 - 01:34 Written by Syk on 27.12.2006 at 14:15 Probably, coz if they were using them on the bass drum, then their legs wouldn't be moving as fast as they would if they were doing all the beats themselves. I guess if you watched a drummer carefully you could tell...

28.12.2006 - 01:50 Written by Syk on 26.12.2006 at 07:58 Well I had a quick browse through Gretsch's artist listings, most of the drummers who use Gretsch seem to be rock or pop drummers... I found one sort-of metal drummer, Kent Ross: "Kent has performed with Sevendust, Ill Nino, Flaw, Default, Anthrax, Aerosmith, Fuel, Godhead, The Who and many others. He is currently with the Josh Todd Band." ...but thats about it :S As for Mapex, the drummers in: Lamb Of God, Angra, Otep, and Satyricon use that brand. Once again, thats about it So yeah, neither brand seems to be very popular in metal...

Account deleted Written by Savage Messiah on 11.01.2007 at 10:34 well as I said it's only my opinion.. but I feel the Zildjian cymbals sound -diferent- and I like them better than others (but Im not discriminating, in fact, my past drumset had paiste instead of Zildjian and the one before that had Sabian xD) maybe are just ideas of mine xD but I just feel better with Zildjian. but that's kinda Irrelevant... when you are playing the less you pay attention to is to your brand of your cymbals (unless they are REALLY crappy and the other brands you mentioned are nothing but good.).

Ohh and when i said "over the others" I meant that I like them over.. not that is better than the others... most of times is a matter of taste... and another thing is that here in my country, the price is really important.. musical instruments are really expensive... so most of times people without good resources have to buy generic drumsets... thoose are cheaper but last less longer and the sound quality is lower.
