I'll say that "Glory to the brave" by hammerfall, and (though it's not actually a ballad), Ghost love score by Nightwish are really depressive songs.

Nightwish - Away Stratovarius - 4000 Rainy Nights i am sometimes not far from going to cry when hearing one of them...those Glory to the Brave and Ghost Love Score from the starting post are nothing in compare with them (although they aren't happy, of course)... (and i made a video from the 300 movie on Away and that is but depressing to watch Spartan soliders dying under the rain of perisan arrows and the lyrics "Away, away, away in time, every dream is a journey away..." :-D)
---- My rest seems now calm and deep Finally I got my dead man sleep

One very depressing ballad that comes to mind right away would be "The Sins of Thy Beloved - Until the Dark" This quite often succeeds to bring me to tears when I hear it. Expecially the part with the violin near the end is so perfectly sad.

There are quite a few, but right now i can think of Silent Tomorrow - Novembers Doom... Its a brilliant song, but it leaves you feeling quite empty in the end... Ironic that im here calling it brilliant though it leaves me feeling empty.

Hmm... Dark Sanctuary have some good ones..although I'm not really into gothic, but...Miserere, Profonderur De L'ame, Le Paradis Noir, Loin Des Mortels, L'ombre triste and L'Autre Monde are really really nice..and she has a stunning voice. In Sight from dark Tranquillity... Last Song from Edge of Sanity.... And lots and lots of Sentenced......

Flowing Tears have a few ballads which sound depressing. imo i think most of their songs are depressing but i still like it because i think their music is very different. other depressing ballads i think are, Feint by Epica, A Question Of Heaven by Iced Earth and Death Whispered a Lullaby by Opeth.

I would choose not something overly depressive like cut your veins doom metal. Virgin Steele is much sadder when it comes to ballads. Just listen to House of Dust or Forever Will I Roam..

15.08.2007 - 20:34 Written by vampira on 10.08.2007 at 14:39 lol when i think of what it was written after, crying wasn't the first emotion to get to me, maybe laugh or something some jerk stole kirk hammet's favourite guitar or something. hell of a song(it's kind of like a metallica version of "beyond the realms of death" by priest), but the point in which it started is kind of silly to me(dude, be a man, wtf, you're going to start writing suicide letters just cause some bum stole your equipment).

I would either say "Losing You" by Dream Evil or "Fade to Black" by Metallica. Fade to Black just has this whole dark"ness" surrounding it. If you're in a depressed mood, this song will definately not make you feel any better at that specific moment, infact just the opposit. It will make you angry, it will make somekind of furiosity stir within you... Well maybe it's just me. The thing is - it's depressive. The other song, Losing you, by Dream Evil, is also a really depressing song. The way Niklas sings the song is just so... I don't know.. Well depressive really. Both songs are some of my favourite songs of all time.
---- THRASH!!!

Hm i am a bit confused here...Are u asking which is the most depressive song or which song makes me cry?! I cry with chainsaw charlie by WASP but this song is not depressive! Anyway - Good topic Nevermore- Dreaming Neon Black Candlemass- Samarithan , Solitude, lets say their whole discography : P W.A.S.P. - The Idol, I can't, All my life, Black Bone Torso, Heaven's hun In Black, Trail of Tears far too many but I dont think you could describe those songs as ballads really. Iced Earth- A question of heaven - i am always getting the blues with this song Sabbath- She'is gone just to name a few ... One of the most depressive bands OF ALL in history of metal gotta be SAINT VITUS. * takes a bow one thing is for sure, they dont have any ballads at all what so ever! : P

Great topic! There are a lot but I'll try to keep it to a reasonable minimum. My Dying Bride - My Wine in Silence, Deepest of all Hearts, The Dreadful Hours Sonata Arctica - Graveninmage, Under Your Tree Blind Guardian - Carry the Blessed Home Hammerfall - The Fallen One Nightwish - Ghost Love Score Aborym - Roma Divina Urbs (Maybe not a ballad, okay, but the "worst" of all for me.)
