This poll missed out many bands...
corpsegrinder (fast growling)of cannibal corpse and benton(powerful growling) of deicide are my favourite 'growlers' .

Yeah how about Barnes and Benton together on "Vomit The Soul",powerful growling, has to be one of the best CC songs to date, surely one of my my personal favs. Also the combo Of Corpsegrinder and Frank Mullen on Suffocation's "Mass Obliteration",does not get any better than that my friend.

I think "best growls" would have been better as a discussion topic rather than a poll, because this poll has missed out almost everything.

Well I agree, there are just to many answers to have a poll.

I already voted for Bloodbath because Tagtgren's and Akerfeldt's kick ass vocals. I also have to give honourable mentions to Amon Amarth and Insomnium.

absolutely.. and in the borders of the poll, I voted for others..
actually I couldnt choose a 'best growler'; there are plenty of nice, unique voices out there
still, i voted for others due to lindberg of at the gates and nightrage (it doesnt mean he's the best for sure but he's the best of those who came into my mind when i was voting in a meaningless hurry =))

I voted for one and only Dark Tranquillity altough it is not true growl but not a word, Mikael have amazing vocals and I like variety in his voice, not grrr all the time, that is what I like. Every respect for Death and Hypocrisy, I don't like other bands from this list and other vocalists from those bands.

I voted other.. Probably Corpsegrinder or Frank Mullen.. On that list in terms of "growls" its probably Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy unfortunately.. Mikael Akerfeldt simply doesn't growl always although he is definitely a better vocalist..

Say more, I'm interested! I don't know this band, are they called simply 'Desire'? You have some link to a myspace or something? Cheers.

@Nervel - well it comes from Portugal and it is simply DESIRE , they have released 2 excellent albums

Infinity...A timeless journey through an emotional dream 1996

Locus Horrendus ...The night cries of a sullen soul 2002

both brilliant funeral doom albums
and what comes to growling - it is very deep and powerful this is very atmospheric , ethereal female vocals time to time , pianos and such

As for me I voted other. But I've a dilemma to which ONE growler I find amazing. It's either Pekka from Kalmah, I'm a real sucker for that band, they just blow me away. ^_^
Another is Jari from Wintersun, his growls also blow me away. Which is the reason that I like the band. It's because of his growls.
And lastly, Mark from Epica, now I know that it's Symphonic Goth Metal or whatever. I just wish Mark would do more growls on their songs. He's pretty good.

Ville Sorvalli from Moonsorrow has the most dramatic and the best screams. Blakkheim is a very good growler too. I wonder why they chose Mikael Åkerfeldt as vocalist on Brave Murder Day. Blakkheim is better than Mikael.

I was on the fence between John Tardy and Luc Lemay... as much as I adore the growls in Obituary, Gorguts's Lemay didn't so much growl as he did wail - goddamn freaky sometimes.

thank you for mentioning Sorvalli, the scream on the intro to 'Jumalten Kaupunki' cracks me up every time, its so awesome. But I just bought a Bloodbath album and it further secures my vote for Aekerfeldt.

I added another vote to Opeth fuck, they have much more votes than anyone else. I agree with Paganblood, this should be a discussion, not a poll, but I would have chosen Opeth anyway. Mikael Åkerfeldt is one of my favorite vocalists and his growls are amazing, he can go from deathish to blackish and still sound great.

Even though Chuck didn't like his vocals and that's why he eventually moved on to Control Denied, his growls are some of the most effective yes...

Well not really a vote...Im not aloud to vote.

But on a side note im not sure id consider Chucks (Death) vocals exactly what youd call growls...at least from the material Ive heard, is there actually any Death growling stuff I may have not heard yet?

Randy Blythe from Lamb of God... I really like how chatoic his voice sounds on the album New American Gospel.
When he goes up around 01:00 ("ashes of the aaawaake!!!") on Hourglass from Ashes of the Awake, pure love!
I also like Niilo Sevänen from Insomnium... He's got a awesome growl with so much emotions Insomnium also got among the most "poetic/beautiful" lyrics I have ever read

Mikeal Akerfeldt has such a listenable and diverse growl. So i voted opeth.
There are so much people now who groel well though, and there are so many different styles. It makes it hard to pick a winner.

I voted Mikael from Opeth, purely because his voice and growls are simply quality. But are his vocals really "growls" as such? His growls just seem more listenable than most other vocalists in this category.

Chuck!!!!!!! old school growling is the true growling!!
He came to the world and said: that's the way you must growl!!! hign and low!!!!!!
Mikael Stanne is also a good growler
Mikael Åkerfeldt is stunning, too. Growls like a beast and has a good clean voice
@omni: that doesn't matter so much, have you ever listened to Vader?, Piotr actually growls, but its very listenable too as Opeth's Mikael.
