Seeing as Prog Metal is such a diverse genre I was wondering what peoples favorite band in this genre is and why. What album is your favorite, what do you think of this bands live preformance, and anything else you would like to add. My favorite Prog Metal band is Tool because all of their albums are amazing. My favorite is Aenima though because it contains most of my favorite songs by them like Hooker With a Penis. Although I haven't seen Tool live yet I would say it looks like they have a sick live show with their lights and everything else that's going on. Other favorites of mine include Opeth, Symphony X, Ayreon, Porcupine Tree, Devin Townsend, Evergrey, Shadows Gallery, Star One, Circus Maximus, Rush, and Dream Theater.

the best prog metal band is Pain Of Salvation for sure!
followers: Psychotic Waltz, Queensryche, Evergrey and Shaddow Gallery
some amazing prog black band (or avatgard): Dodheimsgard, Ved Buens Ende, Enslaved, Arcturus
some gods of proggressive death: Opeth, Death, Cynic, Atheist

all these band are have a groundbreaking and unique sound!
try them

Queenreich, ok I agre and dont ugrie, because Queensraiche play simmilar like Iron Maiden in begining of 80ties, in end of 80ties it was like that time hard rock band, not like LA Guns, GnR but simmilar and thay best soneg ''I dont belive in love, she never was real'' what a great lyric

But I like Psychoctic Waltz better how Dream Theatre

About Enslaved itys viking/vlack metal in all times, but Arcturus, In The Woods agrie

Try prog thrash band Sadus, early Sadus thay are great

In my opinion, Symphony X is the best prog band out there. They have some of the most creative guitar, very strong vocals, nice drumbeats, amazing keyboard, and a talented bass. There is just something about them that no other prog band reall seems to have. I dont know what it is but im glad they have it! Also they sound AWESOME live. Ive never heard someone sing like that live, almost exactly the same as on the CD. Symphony X kicks ass!

I'd probably go with Symphony X myself. Even though I can get into Dream Theater and Queensrcyhe, etc, easier, Symphony X is more diverse and they seem to give off more energy.

Savatage also put out a few good albums, some really bad, but some were pretty amazing like Edge of Thorns.

There were many prog rock bands around in early 70s but Rush is the first band to make progressive metal !! They are amazing!! Rush is the progressive GOD Dream Theater are all Rush fans and they also perform some best progressive music around.

Fates Warning,Symphony X,Poverty's No Crime are other good progressive bands..

Well just because we are talking about Progressive metal doesn't mean that we can't mention Rush because like he said they were one of the most important influence on Progressive Metal.

It has to be Dream Theater. Pain of Salvation may come close, but not quite close enough.

Dream Theater is able to blend amazing technical ability with controlled compositions. They can shift the moment from Pink Floyd, to Rush, to Tool, to Yes, and still do their own original thing. Few bands can play as well as Dream Theater can, few bands can compose as thick as Dream Theater can, and few bands can blend influences as Dream Theater can.

Dream Theater kicks some major butt in this area.

They have progressed musically and are all killer musicians. They have also proved the test of time and have been around for nearly 20 years STILL in thier prime

Dream Theater is the figurehead and the spearhead of
Progressive Rock/Metal for all time. They are the most
virtuous and techniqual band in this genre and further-
more they are the most popular and successfull band in
their genre... They own all of the others, although bands
like Queensryche and Rush are of great importance for
Progressive Rock Music and I like them too!

I have to go for Opeth, the masters. I haven't heard so far such a fine combination of progressive Metal and Death metal. Not only that, but they achieve to inject some bluesy sound into it. Simply, GODS.
Besides Opeth, there are some other very good progressive metal bands out there. Subterranean Masquerade is one for example and of course the avant-garde progressive of Kayo Dot.

I think Stratovarius write the best Progressive songs

But if we're talking about straight Prog, then I'd go with Evergrey. I am not that deeply into Prog, I do like some though.

hmmm i do like Adagio......

anyway, Stratovarius are Prog/Power (or at least nowadays they are) .Some of their songs are straight Progressive Metal though! Listen to "Hunting High And Low" or "I Walk To My Own Song" or "Awaken The Giant" ...... Don't you find it a little awkward classing those tracks as 'Power Metal'

@ Danzig: there are progressive touches, I can agree with this but we can't consider Stratovarius as pure progressive metal. SOngs like "Hunting high and low" are very melodic but not that progressive. I suppose when you like Adagio you notice the differences...I consider Stratovarius as European oriented power metal, but with a lot of skills and that makes their 'progressive touch'.

I disagree with labelling stratovarius prog...prog is so much more than just having a few elements of originality. Not to mention the various forms of prog...

There's the thrashy-powermetal prog like Evergrey, Nevermore, Pagan's Mind, Pain of Salvation, Ayreon....the more avant-garde prog like Ephel Duath, Mr. Bungle, Arcturus (I consider avant-garde prog, if you don't, ignore this...), the psychadelic prog of Porcupine Tree, Psychotic Waltz, etc.....the more extreme prog of Opeth, etc....really depends on what you're goin for.

ok ok Stratovarius is not progresive at all is power so if u want to listen a good power progresive metal you must listen Warmen but if u want some ''clasic''
progresive you must liste Dream theater.
but Warmen you all shall try it.;D

I've tried it, it's decent but no more than that - there's better prog power in Pagan's Mind and Communic, there's better instrumental in Spastic Ink and Gordian Knot...I'm not saying it's bad, it isn't bad, but it's barely progressive imo.
