Grindcore: maybe Cattle Decapitation

I don't think people even noticed them until The Harvest Floor was released a couple of years ago. They were just unoriginal grind until then.

But NOW they are one of the leaders in grindcore

Prog: Dream Theater, most proggies still seem to wet their panties over them

Agreed!
But seriously, I have a question for you who have been in the game for some time, haven't they always been the "leading band" since '92 or whatever?

Actually they have been a prog leader ever since their debut more or less, although Queensryche still came in first at the time because of Operation Mindcrime but with Empire they already lost their prog crown for a lot of people due to its poppy mainstream commerciality.
Btw I guess we're talking about prog METAL or else it would have been Marillion up to that point.

Black Metal: Mayhem. I would say Emperor but the guys broke up.
Death Metal: Possessed ('86 - '89), Morbid Angel ('89 - '91), Death ('91 - '95), Amon Amarth ('98 - today)
Grindcore: Napalm Death
Technical Death Metal: old Atheist?
Doom Metal: Saint Vitus, really influential band.
Progressive Metal: -
Thrash Metal: Kreator forever and ever...

Thrash Metal: Kreator forever and ever...

Death Metal: I prefer Bolt Thrower now, for their uncompromised attitude
Doom Metal: Cathedral(they expanded upon the genre)
Thrash Metal: Sodom and Destruction make better albums than Mille&Co after 1990, plus they influenced SW Black Metal and Death Metal. In The Sign Of Evil and Sentence Of Death are the best EPs in music.

Dream Theater is the worst band in prog?! Really? I've heard much worse than them.
Leading refers here to influential I guess and DT has been more influential in progressive metal than FW (and funny FW were a great influence on DT in the beginning LOL).

I do like FW more than DT these days. But I agree with people mentioning DT here.

worst from 2 FW and DT its worst and FW can find better way and chemistry to write proper songs, in prog many albums are boring, but now DT is like turn of CD after 5 min and FW is rare band in prog who works to me as whole album, and btw are equally good, now they sounds as old DT, in old days DT were better evenb I don't think so but fan ppl think, now FW can write better songs

The question is not who writes better songs, X or Y, but who influenced more in the particular genre and DT deserves to be chosen here, as some have already done.

There are still new bands that are influenced by DT, some good, some predictably bad or bland.
DT is now a pop band? I LOLed at that.

Metallica hasn't played thrash since 1988

Death Magnetic is a little bit thrash, and "And Justice for All" and "Master of Puppets" are still leading albums in the genre, so I think they still count. If that doesn't count, I'd probably go with Kreator.

Those albums don't inspire any new artists, although AJFA and MOP and RTL are classics (wqith of course RTL being their best ). Kreator doesn't influence any new players anymore either. The current crop is mostly inspired by Exodus.

Well I agree on RTL being the best. Still think Kreator is currently more popular than Exodus though, I don't pay attention to thrash so I don't really know.

Fates Warning DOES NOT lead since they fail to influence any new bands nowadays whereas Dream Theater still influences new bands in this day and age.

Fates Warning is no where near as popular as Dream Theater, while an important band, they're really obscure to people just into metal.

Don't understand much of what you're trying to say there but let me see:

You say people don't buy DT albums?! A lot of people still buy cds, I still like to and buy something each chance I get - last DT cds I bought were Black Clouds and Silver Linings and A Dramatic Turn of Events.

You say people don't know DT's first two albums? maybe not the first but DEFINITELY the second, Images & Words which to this day is one of their most popular albums.

Whether you like it or not, DT is the leading progressive metal band, as they have always been influential (for better or for worse).
