every music works best with a particular type of vocals, so this question is a tad stupid.

that explains everything
I find it strange by the way that so many people vote for clean vocals
and because most of the people dont live in developed countries
I quess gothic, power metal, speed metal and metalcore are a big hype out there
more than it is here in europe
on other metalforums where i go where practically only american and european people go, wouldnt vote as many for clean vocals as you did here for sure

Growling for me. That's the way!!! Though there are some bands that I really like with clean vocals like Dragonlord.

Tough choice. Growls are a lot of fun, but if I was going to be left on a remote island with an iPod for three months - and I had to choose one over the other from my collection - I'd have to go with clean vocals. (Come to think of it, the only bands that growl from my collection are Amon Amarth, Opeth, and Testament.)

depends the genre. if you say for black metal then offcourse growls, if you say for death metal or other genres then clean vocals are ok.

It really depends. Some songs/albums/bands really work better with clean vocals and some work better with growls. I really like when both are combined (Wintersun, Emperor, etc.). I voted for clean vocals because there was no choice for both and most of my favorite vocalists (Dio, Dickinson, Hansen, Kursh) are clean vocalists.

As has been previously stated aproximately 3.24x10 to the 23rd power- don't limit it to a specific vocal style, it's all variable.

i think it depends on the band and the song, but generally i prefer growls than clean vocals and some bands vocalists who have an amazing growl have shit vocals

Most metal I like clean vocals, but with songs such as "Take this life" by In Flames, growl brings it to life. There are different levels of growl, for example Marko in Nightwish growls, but his is not extreme compared to the growling in After Forever/Epica. I like Marko's style, but the growling in AF/E just spoil the songs,,,in my opinion.

Hmmm...I'm not completely certain whether the sort of harsh, barked vocals used in heavier thrash metal are supposed to count as "clean" or "growl." I'm talking about the sort of vocals that appear on Reign in Blood. I'm guessing they're "clean," though. Based on that assumption, I vote "clean."
Clean vocals seem more expressive, but I've got nothing against growling or the people who prefer it. With clean vocals you can make out bits of the lyrics just from hearing, which adds to the atmosphere. I like both shouted and sung/semi sung thrash metal vocals. However, I tend not to like the dramatic power metal-style of melodic vocals. And I will say, growling and shrieking definitely sounds more frightening to the rest of society.
The vocals of In Flames have come up several times in this thread. I don't particularly like their vocals, as a matter of fact. Can't quite explain why; it just doesn't sound good to my ear. I'll be the last person to throw around accusations of "sellout," but it's almost as if sometimes they're aiming for a sound vaguely similar to mainstream alternative rock. Except, of course, they're a death metal band, so they're not like alt-rock at all. LOL So I guess they just don't sound right to me.

a combination of growl and clean would do the job. I voted growl but didn't expect to end up in minority.. strange... I prefer growl cause it's tougher and it works better on headbanging

I agree.. each style asks for specific type of vocals. Although I prefer clean, it's impossible for me to answer that question

I like both of the vocal styles. It depends on my mood which vocal style I like the most. A combination of those two is also great, like in Opeth.

im not gonna disagree with all the ladies n gentle men above...each genre has it's own style...so growl goes for like almost every metal genre....metalcore...death...black..grindcore"yes indeed"...so forth...
clean volcalin goes for power n doom for instance....
anywayz....i think i like both.

Im actually gonna go with Damnated on this one. every style of music is different and one style that might be appropriate for one genre might not be appropriate for another. its completely subjective.
