Me personally enjoy almost every metal ballad. Those by Nightwish are great, Iron Maiden (or Bruce Dickinson self) have good ones, but by me is currently winning Manowar with Courage...how about you?

Ballads perhaps a few come to mind... but il narrow it down or this list could get quite long.

Me too. But it is such a long-ago-song so I dont mention. Try the one I mention above post. Hope it is your type.

By the way, I would just like to clarify that a Ballad is any song that tells a story.... and not just random mid tempo mellow songs =P

The best metal ballad must be Another Day by Dream Theater. A cool saxophone and that guitar solo is breathtaking! The best Rock ballad will always be Middletown Dreams by Rush, such a beautiful one. PROGYGRESSIVE 4-EVER!

Yes Another Day by Dream Theater is awesome! <3 progressive music!

Kamelot - Epilogue is a good one...
Though im a kamelot fan theres just something special with this song, probably because khan's voice is just breathtaking.
btw theres no guitar solo or anything, mostly piano. quite chill song actually.

Gotta mention Symphony X - Paradise Lost aswell, nice guitar solo at the end.

How about "The Ballad" by Testament from Practice What You Preach.

I prefer "The Legacy" from "Souls Of Black". Definitely one of the most haunting and atmospheric metal ballads Ive ever heard. xD

As for my fave, I dunno, there's so many good ones. lol "The Sacrifice" by Symphony X is a very beautiful one. It almost always makes me cry. hehe

Testament's "The Ballad" is amazing, but dont say that out loud or else marcel might come and bash you .. he's an anti-(post legacy)-testament ..
The Legacy (the track) is definitely a favorite too ! ... and Symphony X's "The sacrifice" is a great addition to the list... i couldnt add more to those three tracks.

In my humble opinion, "The Ballad" is only decent at best. Actually, there's nothing special about it, unless you're a sucker for guitar solos.

AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH The Ballad is one of the very worst ballads I ever heard.

Ballad by gang Green is an example of a great ballad that DOES work.

Except it does suck. There's nothing memorable or interesting about, it simply drags along. Melodic solos don't make a good ballad.

Wow, there are many great ballads out there, Nightwish's "The Islander", Blind Guardian's "The Lord of the Rings" or Symphony X's "Paradise Lost", just to name a few. When it really comes to the best of the best though, I'd have to go with either "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica or Demons & Wizards' amazing "Fiddler on the Green".

The former one of course because of its lyrics that are so full of truth. "Life is our's, we live it our way" just perfectly sums up what life is about. Some people out there, some of which I meet on a daily basis, really need to listen to this, because they still believe that their way of life is the only acceptable one...
The latter one I chose because of how the song slowly builds up to a great finale. It's slow and emotional, almost sad, but really explodes towards the end. This is clearly Hansi Kürsch at his best, and the lyrics aren't half-bad either, telling a beautiful story about two people destined to be together. The fact that this song is relatively unknown also somehow adds to its magic.
