For me, a very underrated album! Some people say this is "nu metal", but as far as I can see, there's nothing nu metal about this album. lol There was some nu metal elements on GHUA, but not on DIM. :\

"Screaming From The Sky" and "Wicked" are weak songs, and "Love To Hate" isn't amazing, but everything else on the album is awesome as hell to me! Songs like the creepy as hell "Death's Head" and the crushing "Perversions Of Pain" are amongst Slayer's best and most underrated songs. The Japanese bonus track "Unguarded Instinct" is also an amazing song, and I wish it had been on the album proper, cos I wasn't able to hear it until many years after this album came out.

i'd say this a bit "hardcore" but it ist nu metal at all... Death's Head, Bitter Peace, Scrum and Stain Of Mind are the best songs imo!

I have to agree, they are all great songs! "Death's Head" is very effective at sounding totally disturbing, which is perfect for it's subject matter. lol I love the way "Bitter Peace" builds the tension slowly with it's intro riffs, before tearing into all out thrash later on... brilliant arrangement, and an amazing Slayer song! "Scrum" is the only pure thrash song on the album, and it's an awesome one for sure... should be regarded as a Slayer classic Imo. "Stain Of Mind" is just catchy as anything, I love singing along to it! haha xD

slayer be this great thrash band that was super big in the 80s, im talkin like reign in blood and south and heaven and shit, all kinds a crazy albums people everywhere dig
shit you can juss headbang to, you know
with this album these guys let the world know dem glory days be over fo rill
like it make you think are them brothas even tryin anymo

the two album before dis one aint nothin to marvel at anyway, but dey had a real chance to return ta glory here and they missed real bad
overall dis shit is legit annoying, like brotha maybe you should learn to write more then one riff, you know
i know they know how to, because they did it before
it be like when a brotha actin thug in tha street when you know that kid just aint like that, he gon be sum big fancy doctor, not a gangsta
go back ta schoo kid, get yer degree and shit and stop muckin about round here with us lowly folk
thas what this album be like, a future prettyboy doctor posin as some hard thug

even beyond that posin bit, you still gotsta consider for rill what exactly be goin down in them songs
like i guess you can call some of the solos, if you can even call em dat, mediocer at best
i jus dont undastand what there be ta lissen to once tha first track be done playin
not that it be a great track anyhow
i mean a brotha be yellin like he used to sorta, but he sound real weak now, older beyond a brotha years
and them gitarists aint seem real motivated either
a brotha need passion to play music good, and they actin like all the passion gone in they lives
jus becuz you start rippin off punk music don mean you forget yo purpose as thrash legends, ya dig

this album aint even a good by a number album, it just grate yo ears rill bad
at least a brotha can relive them glory days anytime a brotha want

Interesting review... good thing we always got those glory days to go back to I hear ya on that. Too many bands have just turned to shit in their careers but have some good classics that never get old.

This kind of has that classic late 90s/early 00s nu/alternative vibe to it, unfortunately it doesn't really jive well with the slayer tones and especially the vocals. Little weird this one, not really that good either.

Definitely not your traditional Slayer album. But from listening to it many times over since it was released, there is no doubt that a lot of thought, ideas and creativity went into producing this album, it is quite interesting and very underrated by old school Slayer fans. This is one of their most creative albums and there is nothing commercial or nu metal about it, even if Slayer suppose that they were attempting to flow with the current trends of that time. If they continued to flow down this path of songwriting they would have increased and Slayer do not give themselves enough credit for this fantastic piece of work.

I know, right!? His reviews are hilarious. His review of Like An Ever Flowing Stream is a masterpiece

Quote:
... thundercunt reviews dismember - like an ever flowing stream

yo, this band right here be from sweden and this shit called a debut, meaning it they first one, which make all tha following thing imma say about it even more impressive
just sit back and relax fo a minute, a brotha just wanna take you through an analasis

first off, it aint none a that high-tech mumbo jumbo like is so poplar now wit all tha triggered drums and tha fifty layer guitars and stuff
shit be old school, like i talkin jesus on a dinosaur kinda old school
goes way back and delivers the goods you expect from this kinda old school swedish death metal

second, this debut got this thang called atmosphere, you dig
like when you listen you aint just goin all ya ya, i get it the music be good and shit
no, you sit back and think goddayum, this shit be ill
like it just aint about the instruments bein good, it be more about how the album sound in your soul, way deep inside you

third, those melodical parts aint in there just fo show
they tell too
they tell you how this shit spose ta be, brotha
it sound like real talk from a group of real honest dudes, hard motherfuckas
east side kinda homies who aint here to mess about

seriously, i just sayin listen to how this debut flows
it be they first time writin this shit all down and it sound profeshonal
that right there be the mark of true talent
it aint often tha gitar sound so crunchy, but dayum these ones do sound crunchy

take sum a that punk shit from the olden days and give it some evil atmosphere
tune down the gitars and yell into the mike like a raging loon and you have this masterpiece

Do let me know where else he posted reviews!

I do not have harsh feelings against Nu-metal. I used to like Nu and alternative metal bands like Korn and Deftones when I was a teenager. Absorbing unconventional musical elements would be totally fine. It might broaden the musical knowledge of their fans if the musical mixture is successful. But it would be a horrendous outcome if the mixture was a total failure. In short, Slayer failed to do a quality job of juxtaposing the Nu-metal grooves with their legacy in this album.

Death's Head, Bitter Peace, Scrum and Stain Of Mind are the best songs imo!

Agreed to-the-song. Just after those four would be "Point" for me.

I personally enjoy this album. There's no nu-metal elements on this album. I mean seriously, where's the rap lyrics and the turn tables? Because this isn't a nu-metal album. So what if this album is in a drop tuning. I listen to this album start to finish. Point is one of my personal favorites on this album. DIM I'm sure isn't the greatest Slayer album but Slayer worked on something a little different but still having the Slayer sound in it.

This album is way better than what people make it out to be. The guitar tone is excellent, and I mean really damn good. The songs are kind of hit and miss. Bitter Peace, Scrum, Point and Perversion of Pain are great shit, but then there are stinkers like Love To Hate (06 - 13) that miss the mark. I'd say the less good parts are ok and listenable if you forget that it's Slayer. Nu metal this isn't, but there is influence drawn from then hot SOAD, thanks to Rick Rubin who produced both bands.
