Speaking of Iron Maiden, let's not forget Strange World from their debut album.

Okay for anyone who thinks a ballad has to be sad... I quote my English Literature/Poetry books, which Wikipedia apparently also quoted: "A ballad is a form of verse, often a narrative set to music. Ballads were particularly characteristic of British and Irish popular poetry and song from the later medieval period until the 19th century and used extensively across Europe and later North America, Australia and North Africa. Many ballads were written and sold as single sheet broadsides. The form was often used by poets and composers from the 18th century onwards to produce lyrical ballads. In the later 19th century it took on the meaning of a slow form of popular love song and the term is now often used as synonymous with any love song, particularly the pop or rock power ballad." for further reading on what a ballad is here is the link to wikipedia on that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballad

Please people, stop quoting wikipedia for your references. Try reading some ballads. Some 19th centruy prose; some shakespearean ballads, anything but quoting wikipedia. Good day.

Some good ones just off the top of my head. Basically songs that make me feel strong, deep emotions. Iron Maiden- Revelations Iron Maiden- Strange World Bruce Dickinson- Tears of The Dragon Judas Priest- Worth Fighting For Judas Priest- Take These Chains off Guns N Roses- Think About You ( I know GnR is more of a Hard Rock band, but they make some songs that are metal. IMHO they have some of the best ballads of all time) Ed Guy- Save Me Ed Guy- Another Time Testament- Return to Serenity Toxik- There stood the fence Heathen- Prisoners of Fate Flotsam and Jetsam- Better Off Dead Death Angel- Volcanic Metallica- Sanitarium Artillery- Don't Believe Rainbow- Street of Dreams Dio- Don't Talk to Strangers Dio- As Long as it's not about love Journey- Winds of March (Listen to it, could easily be considered a metal ballad) In Flames- December Flower In Flames- Jester Race
---- The word gen means "illusion" or "apparition." In India, a man who uses conjury is called a genjutsushi ["a master of illusion technique"]. Everything in this world is but a marionette show. Thus we use the word gen.

09.12.2010 - 04:28 Written by Kevorkian on 09.12.2010 at 04:16 I can see why you'd call it a ballad, but I dont think it is. Though it is a very melodic song with balladic parts. lol I think the album only contains 2 actual ballads, No Pain... and "Wishing Well". Although "Late Redemption" also has balladic elements like the title track, and could be classed as one by some. Anyways, "Temple Of Shadows" is one of my all time favourite albums, every single song on it is amazing! <3 As for the female vocals, its just a personal preference thing really. I dont like them in metal music.

Some of these might be rather unconventional choices, but here are my picks... Anathema - The Silent Enigma Draconian - Heaven Laid in Tears Iced Earth - Melancholy (Holy Martyr) Metallica - To Live is to Die Opeth - To Bid You Farewell Pantera - Cemetary Gates For some metallers, this question might not be as straightforward as it sounds, as much of what is considered doom (or the multitude of related genres) contains certain elements of what might make a song a ballad. However, if you refer to almost every song a particular band makes as a ballad, then the term "ballad" loses its significance pretty quickly.

I would have to say that my favourite ballad of all time must be Megadeth's A Tout Le Mounde. That song is so good that it gives me shivers down my spine every time I listen to it. It is also one of the few songs where Dave Mustaine puts up an absolutely excellent vocal performance!
