I remember the first time I ever heard about this band called Emeth, it was back in 2004 when the CD "Insidious" popped in my head after some Death Metal talk with some friends; then a year later the band sent me their album to review. Let me tell you guys, I was amazed by the brutality found in that album, every single track was a bullet piercing my brain slowly and painfully; I liked that album a lot so I said to myself "I fucking have to hear their new release?but damn I'll have to wait more than 10 months for it...well if their next album becomes as great as this I won't care".

"Reticulated" finally arrived a couple of weeks ago, I've been hearing it over and over again and I just don't get what the hell happened to this band; the overwhelming brutality is totally gone let me tell you. To begin with, the vocalist is no longer doing deep and scary growls, he's now focused on hardcore screams and a couple of gasps here and there but that's it. The music is still crushing and violent, but in a different way, every single structure shows a more experienced band with better harmonious sense and a great sound overall.

Emeth evolved into a technical machine, even the breakdowns are way more complex than what I heard in "Insidious". The million dollars question would be "Is the new Emeth better than the oldEmeth?" I think the new band is musically better as they changed their whole scheme of just being brutal and really fucking powerful to being kind of aggressive while adding sophistication towards the music. In fact, to be honest, the only thing I can't dig (I tried I swear) is the vocal work, the new hardcore design screws the whole mix and creates a really weird crossover all along the album; it also steals a lot of brutality if you know what I mean.

This album was really difficult to review as it is not what I was expecting, but it is not bad at all you know? Musically it's a masterpiece of the genre but if you used to love this band only for their utter brutality and their sick grunts, you will get badly disappointed for sure. This is more o less what happened to Aborted with their "Archaic Abattoir" album; after that release their fan-base grew enormously but they also lost some brutal aficionados; I think that's exactly what will happen soon with Emeth. I'm giving a high rating because of the music, I have to maintain my objectivity you know?

Musical masterpiece!! - Not brutal enough

Best Tracks: "Heteronomy Of Will" (Brilliant song), "Eleven", "Nescientia"
Rating breakdown
Performance: 9

ok couldnt find any mp3 there but then i found Eleven on their myspace profile.

well...that hardcore voice is killing the music more than anything else. the brutality level though is just ok for me. anyway i never listened to bands just for their brutality. the music itself very good with lots of breaks. its also catchy. i can say that i enjoyed it, but not enough to buy the album.

Hmm...gonna check it out.

edit:

Well I checked it out, a few listens...not bad at all, reminds me of bathtub shitter. Very fast, catchy, doesnt have that gloomy feeling to it like some other (i wanna say grindcore, but there is a lot of brutal death metal in this album) bands.

In my opinion...if you wanna get into brutal death metal/grindcore/deathcore this is the album you should listen to, not to hard on the ears for a first time listener and very enjoyable. They kept it crisp and clean, and knew exactly just how soft/brutal they could go.
